Intravenous Fluid Type of Solution Mechanism of Action Indication Contraindication Nursing Responsibilities
D5NM(Dextrose 5% in
Normosol MSolution )
Hypertonic When administeredintravenously,
Normosol-M and 5%Dextrose Injection
provides water andelectrolytes (withdextrose as a readilyavailable source ofcarbohydrate) formaintenance of dailyfluid and electrolyterequirements, plusminimal carbohydratecalories.
The electrolytecomposition approachesthat of the principal ionsof normal plasma(extracellular fluid).
D5NM is indicated for parenteral maintenance ofroutine daily fluid andelectrolyte requirementswith minimal carbohydratecalories from dextrose.
Hypersensitivity to any ofthe components.
Do not administer unless solution isclear and container is undamaged.
Caution must be exercised in theadministration of parenteral fluids, especially those containing sodiumions to patients receivingcorticosteroids or corticotrophin.
Solution containing acetate should beused with caution as excessadministration may result in metabolicalkalosis.
Discard unused portion. Properly label the IV Fluid Observe aseptic technique when
changing IV fluid

PLR(Plain LactaedRingers)
Isotonic Rehydration from the waterin a Lactated Ringer'ssolution is vital, as the totalweight of the body is about70 percent water.
Lactated Ringer's is givenintravenously to a patientto replace fluids andelectrolytes lost fromillness or injury. Theconcentration ofelectrolytes and water isdesigned to mimic thecomposition of the blood
plasma. This solution may be prescribed along with asugar solution (typicallydextrose) to provide asource of calories. LactatedRinger's may also be usedin conjunction with avariety of intravenousmedications in order todilute the medication.
Hypersensitivity to any ofthe components. Do not administer unless solution is
clear and container is undamaged.
Caution must be exercised in theadministration of parenteral fluids, especially those containing sodiumions to patients receivingcorticosteroids or corticotrophin.
