A seal of excellence is much more than a logo. It encapsulates everything a company promises to deliver. In DSM’s case, Quality for Life™ conveys the peace of mind that comes with top quality reliability – an added value that is more relevant than ever before.

In November 2008, we launched our Quality for Life™ seal of excellence. The key message conveyed by the Quality for Life™ seal is peace of mind: a promise built on the four pillars of quality, reliability, traceability and sustainability. An important part of our Quality for Life™ philosophy is our conviction

that the value we offer our customers must also be guaranteed for end consumers.

Five years after launching the seal, our desire to exceed customer expectations is stronger than ever. Our continued commitment to the four pillars of quality, reliability, traceability and sustainability is proof that delivering first-rate products and services is, and will always be, the foundation of our business. Happy birthday, Quality for Life™!

Quality for Life™ celebrates five years of delivering on our customer promise

DSM joined forces with the Early Nutrition Academy to host a satellite symposium at “The Power of Programming 2014” conference in Munich, Germany from 13–15 March 2014. Entitled “Meeting Nutrient Needs in the First 1,000 Days of Life”, this event brought together world-renowned experts in the field of maternal and infant nutrition, including Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta (Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan), Dr. Irene Cetin (University of Milan, Italy), Dr. Berthold Koletzko (University of Munich, Germany), Dr. Tamas Decsi (University of Pécs, Hungary) and Dr. Manfred Eggersdorfer (DSM Nutrition Science & Advocacy).

DSM and Early Nutrition Academy host symposium on nutrient needs in the First 1,000 Days of Life

A key insight was that significant numbers of women and children, in developed as well as developing countries, do not enjoy the optimal level of nutrient intake. Approaches to filling this gap and helping shape society’s long-term health were discussed.

PHYTANTRIOL delivers on the key benefits that drive the hair care market today and answers future lifestyle trends. Its unique properties make it a tried and tested active for hair that repairs, enhances and protects from root to tip.

Jörg Richter, Senior Director Global Marketing & Innovation Personal Care at DSM, comments: “Once again, at this leading business platform for personal care ingredients, we were very proud to demonstrate to our customers our passion and creativity in crafting transformational beauty care ingredients and concepts that truly change the way people look and how they feel about themselves.”

The Global Marketing Personal Care team

Sensorial elegance of formulations is also our focus in Sun Care. DSM presented the next level of its Ultimate UV Protection platform, turning day care with UV protection and beach sunscreens into desirable formulations optimizing both performance and sensory characteristics. In line with recent consumer findings, our experienced sensory panel helps formulators navigate their way through ingredient combinations so as to achieve the desired Ultimate UV Protection and sensorial objectives, with PARSOL® UV filters, the AMPHISOL® K emulsifier and skin care actives. Not only does our panel help with closing the protection gap; it also enables marketers to choose between different sensorial characteristics and positioning options in order to fully meet consumer requirements.

When it comes to long-term beauty transformations and skin aging, senescence has recently been in the spotlight. As a key factor in natural cellular aging, senescence can also be fundamental to new approaches to preventive anti-aging. Our extended research into senescence has culminated in REGU®-SCENCE, an active carefully isolated and purified from Asparagus officinalis ‘Grolim’, the pearl of Navarra. With its unique action, this asparagus variety naturally stimulates the skin’s own autophagic capabilities, thus helping to delay the signs of cellular aging by decades. Extended in-vivo studies have confirmed the efficacy of REGU®-SCENCE in improving the appearance of two major signs of aging in the skin: collagen loss and dermis thinning.

DSM opens China Animal Nutrition Center

DSM is proud to announce the opening of its state-of-the-art China Animal Nutrition Center near Beijing.

The new center is a world-class animal nutrition R&D center. With its strong focus on application research activities, it represents an important step forward in our strategy to provide global product development and local solutions.

The center consists of a globally advanced laboratory for most common assays, feed and microbiological samples: office buildings; an experimental animal feed plant; a manure treatment plant; and modern experimental

pig and poultry houses with a separate visitors’ corridor.

The center is designed according to DSM requirements and to minimize any environmental impact. It will operate in accordance with international standards. The center is committed to high-quality R&D, and aims to develop innovative products with proprietary technologies that will support the growth of animal nutrition in China.

Our investment in the center clearly demonstrates our commitment to China as an important growth area that is showing

interesting advances in the market and especially in animal nutrition. The state-of-the-art installation will be a showcase for international and Chinese customers, and is complementary to our existing Research Center for Animal Nutrition in Europe.

Approximately 30 people will work in the new center once it is fully operational, including site management, scientists, lab technicians, feed mill staff, animal carers, and support functions.

DSM Vitamin SupplementationGuidelines 2011

HEALTH • NUTRITION • MATERIALS

for domestic animals

Guidelines for Optimum Vitamin NutritionDSM vitamin supplementation guidelines are designed to provide Optimum Vitamin Nutrition under typical industry practices.Optimum Vitamin Nutrition provides all vitamins in the diet at levels that permitoptimum health and productivity ofdomestic animals. The supplementationlevels required to attain Optimum VitaminNutrition generally exceed the levelsneeded to prevent clinical deficiency signs.Optimum intake compensates for themany factors which can influence the animals requirementsand the feed levels thus, ensuring that vitamin fortification does not limit performance.

These guidelines are ranges and based onextensive university and industry research, published requirements and practical experience. They accommodatemost factors that influence the vitamin requirements of animals, how ever extremefeed processing conditions may necessitateoverages of sensitive vitamins.

The listed vitamin levels are only guidelinesand, in all cases, national feed legislationmust be followed.

All figures are expressed in terms of vitamin activity. In general, amounts given are per kg air-dry feed, except for ruminants and horses.

Conversion factors

Standard DSM vitamins for animal nutrition

Factors influencing vitamin needs of animalsunder commercial production conditions:•Direct factors - Stressors on animal:

DiseaseConfinementRestricted feedingAntagonistsAir qualityTemperature

•Indirect factors -Variations of levels in feedstuffs:BioavailabilityStabilityQuality of feedstuffs

Legends'Total vitamin intake from all sources in diet'describes the total quantity of vitamins from alldietary sources, i.e. natural content of the feedstuffs plus supplementation.'Average animal response' refers to any average productivity or health response of animals to vitamin intake, i.e. growth rate, feedefficiency, reproductive performance, welfare, health or immunity.'Deficient'or 'marginal' vitamin intake means alevel of supplementation below the requirements published by NRC, ARC and otherofficially published vitamin recommendations.Such vitamin supply puts animals at risk of developingclinical deficiencies and disordersresulting from inadequate vitamin intake.

'Sub-optimum'intake relates to supplementationlevels, which typically meet or slightly exceedthe NRC, ARC and other officially published vitamin recommendations. These levels shouldprevent sub-clinical deficiency signs undergood conditions, but are by no means adequateto permit optimum health and productivity. However, with stress and diseases, sub-clinicaldeficiency might occur. 'Optimum'intake offsets negative factors influencing animalhealth and performance, thus allowing to take advantage of the performance potential of modern animal breeds.'Special applications' levels of vitamin supplementation are safe and focused in improving certain attributes e.g. meat qualityand immunity.

Latin American feed sector renews focus on vitamin nutritionCreating dietary preconditions for healthy livestock performance is critical for healthy economic performance. An optimized balance of vitamins in the diet can help achieve this.

Feed production in Latin America has grown by an average of 3–4% in recent years. In addition, the feed industry as a whole is becoming more conscious of the importance of food safety and sustainability. This renewed focus on healthy vitamin nutrition has been very well received in Latin America. While many customers have paid relatively little attention to their vitamin premix in recent years, they now realize that it’s time to review the situation.

OVN™ is a concept that encompasses all the vitamins, and as such it focuses on the entire range. If one vitamin has been singled out for special attention, however, it is vitamin E. In many cases, customers have realized that their previous minimum levels of vitamin E supplementation were far below recommendations.

The potential benefits of feeding healthy levels of vitamin E are certainly very attractive. Vitamin E is required for normal growth and reproduction, helps to maintain the structural integrity of all tissues, supports the development of the nervous system, and supports optimum health and disease resistance in farm animals.  Although it is primarily known as a biological antioxidant, its

physiological importance is much broader. Vitamin E deficiency is in fact the reason for several dramatic species-specific disorders. Dietary supplementation of food-producing animals with vitamin E via the feed is therefore mandatory.

The DSM Vitamin Supplementation Guidelines, which are designed to provide Optimum Vitamin Nutrition™ within the context of typical

industry practices, are very much in demand in Latin America. Responding to this very high level of demand, we have made them available free of charge as an app for iPhone and Android smart phones, in hard copy, or for download from the Internet.

DSM inaugurates new Fortitech® Premixes plant in Vadodara, India

On 9 April 2014 DSM inaugurated its Fortitech® Premixes plant in Vadodara, Gujarat. The plant is spread across 10,000 square meters and will be a one-stop source for food, beverage and pharmaceutical manufacturers looking for fortification as a way to differentiate their products from their competition.

Fortitech® Premixes are customized blends of functional ingredients from a comprehensive selection of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, nucleotides and nutraceuticals. They are used in a wide range of products, including baby formulas, cereals, bars, dairy products, nutrition and sports drinks, juices, snacks, waters, candies, and supplements. The nutritional ingredients are also tailored to address specific health concerns.

Fortitech® Premixes streamline the production process, as each premix is a single source of multiple nutrients, helping manufacturers to save on labor, costs and testing. Manufacturers will also gain an edge on their competition through the use of various market-ready products and finished-goods manufacturing capabilities. The new plant will serve the South Asian market. It has teams in Delhi and Mumbai, as well as a business development group based in Malaysia and an upcoming innovation center in Singapore.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, H.E. Alphonsus Stoelinga, said: “Royal DSM is recognized for its global
