CarniVal Hat-trick to South AustraliaVICTORIA DOWN IN FINAL GAM E

surprises at Home, Too - Six Leaders BeatenBy GEORGE McTAGGART

South Australia won their third successive Australian Amateur~ Football Carnival when they beat Victoria the hot favoirites, by 34 points

tt, the final match at Thebarton Oval, Adelaide, last Sunday .It was a distinct reversal of form . by the South Australians who

ere extremely lucky to beat West Australia in the opening match and, cere not convincing in their win over Tasmania .

But the shocks were not confined to the Carnival - six leadingteams were beaten in last Saturday's round here in Melbourne, two ofthem (Thomastown Juniors and West Brunswick Reserves) suffering thei rfirst defeat for the season.

Old Trinity kept themselves inrunning for the four with an

35~~ win over Coburg, who showedttle of their former power foot-

,all . The fast, play-on style for: hich they have long been re-„cnvned was just not there.

Mcnash Blues, conquerors ofleaders North Old Boys a couple of:eeks previously, sprang another~urprise - this time they beat St .Bernard's, by a point. St. Bernard's0bviously missed their five playersin the Carnival side.

North Old Boys had a real tussleti~;ith University Blues, who ranNorth to 14 points in a high stand-ard, high-scoring game . The scoresa: ere level at three-quarter-time .

Ormond continued their upwardrend with a big win over Univer-

:ity Blacks, who have stumbled intothe "hot seat" .

Collegians were well beaten byMarcellin and lost their place inthe four, which is once again oc-cupied by Old Paradians, and Caul-field Grammar jolted Geelong's finalfour hopes .

Old Haileybury failed again -going down this time to Fawkner, who won by 33 points, while OldMelburnians swamped HamptonRovers to let Fawkner into thefour, at the same time helpingthemselves to Haileybury's topspot.

St . Kevin's like St . Bernard's,were also beaten by a point, alsoby a down-the-line team, NorthBrunswick, but ANZ Bank foundHeatherton a long way further infront at the final siren.

In the Juniors, Hampton Roversworried Ivanhoe, running them to

- vote for Blues .st Bernard's will be greatly

;trengthened by the return of theirfive State men and should be ableto wear down the inconsistent OldTrinity.

De La Salle should continue ontheir recent good form and takethe points from giant killers, Mo-nash Blues. Although strengthenedhy the return of reliable RossBooth, Monash may not stand upto "De La's pressure tactics .Even though they play at home

and have the added bonus ofcoach Peter O'Donohue at the helmagain, University Blacks have apoor track record against Reser-voir Old Boys. Mike Bates and RayShepherd return for Reservoir andfurther confirm them as my choice .

North Old Boys are at home toOrmond and I see a very even, game in prospect as Ormond re-iurn to something of the form thathas earned them the respect of allclubs over recent years .

I must confess to seeking BruceBourne's advice on which way togo . He said North and I know he~vouldn't pull my leg. Of coursehe could see me as "Kiss of Death"but nevertheless I will stick to hissound advice .

My congratulations to all the Vic-torian Squad who have represent-ed our Association w ith distinction .

SELECTIONS - UniversityBlues, St Bernard's, De La Salle,Reservoir Old Boys and North OldBoys. - ALF KEAM.

B SECTIONB Gradians can be proud of

gaining 8 representatives in thecarnival team. This is a staggeringhigh percentage and indicates thatthe two promoted teams next yearwill do well in A Section.

Class will always win out andGreg Tootell's great individualperformances of 8 goals must beapplauded. With three Caulfieldstars in Adelaide someone had totake command and naturally it wasGreg .

Jim,Fidge - your slip is showingand your sarcasm is on a par withyour prediction ability .

Special Prediction - Old Careyto win their 1st game for 1976 .

Naturally it is hard to pick thewinner of the Old Scotch-Caulfieldclash. Statistically Caulfield shouldwin but they will have to fit 3tired carnival players into the teamand this should be just enough togive Scotch the edge .

Cox (9 last week) is movingbeautifully and he will be the keyto a win. I sense a great will towin in the Scotch side today . Allin all a very even game .Old Paradians are back in the

four and I do not think they willlet Geelong set them back . Gee-long need a win and will be con-fident at home but Paradians havethe best of two worlds .

Firstly, they are tight and sec-ondly they have a dominatingspearhead who is playing to his realability . Paradians to win well .

Marcellin are playing so stronglywith both forwards and backs par-ticipating and they will wear StKilda CBC down. The Marcellinrucks in particular will be a hand-ful of trouble for St Kilda to com-bat . Heading for a double chancewill make Marcellin strive for a bigwin .

Collegians not disgraced againstMarcellin should bounce right backat Harry Scott and defeat Ivanhoe .

A loss to Collegians with paradians winning could well put anend to Collegians hopes of the fourand this alone will get them pastthe post .

And the big one Old Carey t,defeat Melbourne High . Carey sperformance against Marcellin forthree quarters suggest they areimproving, and Ivanhoe did no;have it all their own way last week .

Melbourne High on the otherhand seem to have lost their earlyseason enthusiasm .

SELECTIONS - Old Scotch, OldParadians, Marcellin, Collegians,Old Carey. - JOHN BYRNE.

C SECTIONHow the mighty have fallen. I

feel I should write a new song"Just Haileybury and me" .

What happened! The scoresfiltered through to Adelaide ratherpromptly -

I've jumped in the Pool andnow feel fresh enough to try andpick this week's winners .

Old Melburnians venture to tomb-stone Territory to take on "giantkillers" Fawkner . Our's will haveall their big guns out to take thepoints .

The inside info, was that Park.side would be first to knock offOld Haileybury and if only thirdin line I'm sure that they will bevery pleased - at home I thinkthey can do it .

Kew will be switched on againstPower House and gain four sur-vival points .

Even though Old Ivanhoe werein the money last week I expectHampton Rovers to return to thewinning list.

Alphington and UHSOB will beclose and the Old Boys' successlast week will give them a boostto get the upper hand .

SELECTIONS - Old Melburn-ians, Parkside, Kew, UHSOB,Hampton Rovers .

D SECTIONGood sides seem to get over their

mid-season slumps - here's hopingpre-the saphoughtit

tipsters,tosumptuous

consider myself "good" .Five last week but I think my

chances this week are brittle as Ionly pick one home side . And that'sa danger game - AJAX at hometo Assumption .

AJAX have not been winning byas much in recent weeks - per-haps it's because "that man" hasbeen over in Adelaide! Neverthe-less, look out today. I have asneaky suspicion that even whileconsistency must force me to leancowards AJAX, Assumption whoappear back in business, could up-set that long AJAX winning se-quence . We will see !

I saw State Bank for a quarteror so last week and they looked

good! Brunswick were goalless untilmid third term but then improvedas the Bank appeared to relax .

"Porky" Brennan drove home aclassy goal for the Bank whileJeff. Inglis took a magnificent markwhich he followed with an equallytalented goal that was comparableto anything you will see in ourhigher Sections .

If the Bank keep playing likemost of last week they can makethe four.

The Old Brighton ground is anold State Bank strongpost so Ipredict Bank to adapt readily andbeat Old Brighton who are alwaysdangerous at Brighton Beach.

Old Camberwell, the otherchance for fourth place, are doingeverything right and will beat OldGeelong who disappointed againstAssumption last week. That con-sistent form of recent weeks lookslike it will really pay off forCamberwell .

Old Xavs have come good andwill not be troubled by poor oldNational Bank whose stocks are aslow as can be . It's a chance for theXavs to bolster percentage whichis the weaker of the top four .

The "wicks" meet at Brunswickand this game could be more in-teresting than would first appear .Elsternwick still with final fouraspirations, will get the points butas was evident last week if yourelax when playing Brunswick, thatteam can come to life .

SELECTIONS - Old Camberwell,AJAX, Elsternwick, State Bank,Old Xave rians. - JIM FIDGE.

E SECTIONSyd Whitfield has been away and

his return to Melbourne has beendelayed. Consequently his pre-view will not appear this week.

SELECTIONS - St. Kevin'sNorth Brunswick, Heatherton, OldMentonians, AMP Society. -GEORGE McTAGGART.

F SECTIONWest Brunswick have assured me

that they do not believe in mid-season slumps by having "a resound-ing win over University Reds . Witheleven matches played, it was nota bad effort to be undefeated inboth seniors and reserves .

This week Bulleen-Templestowemeet Bulleen United and the out-come will be in favour of the vi-sitors, Bulleen United, who havebeen more consistent in the lastfew weeks .

Footscray I .T. and St. Bede'scould be an interesting game butI don't think that the bridesmaidteam St . Bede's'will give too muchand should be the victors .

Although Beverley Hills haveshown good promise they just won'thave the ability to "knock off" WestBrunswick, there is nothing morethat can be said about this game .

The battle for the wooden spooncould be interesting with the twouniversities fighting it out ; on formLa Trobe Reds will be too strongfor University Reds.

Page 8

The Thornbury-Glenroy matc}lwill be a tough affair and eventhough Glenroy usually prove mewrong, I will go for home sideThornbury to win the day .

SELECTIONS - Bulleen Uiuted,St. Bede's, West Brunswick, LaTrobe Reds, Thornbury . - KEITHFINDLAY.

JUNIOR SECTION 1We are now two-thirds of the

way through the home-and-homegames and this is the time whenmany upsets can occur. We havesides trying to avoid relegation, attempting to make the four andin some sections endeavouring toremain unbeaten .

With Thomastown beaten lastweek, Old Haileybury the week be-fore, the big question in this sec-tion is whether North Old Boys canmaintain concentration .

Power House are at home toNorth Old Boys this week andcoach Gary Boyd will be keen forhis players to knock off the un-beaten side . As the saying goes,House have everything to gain andnothing to lose, but Gary willunderstand if I select North onform.Hampton Rovers are at least

three games plus percentage shortof' avoiding relegation, with sixgames to go. University Black

s should have no trouble in winningthis game .

Old Scotch are at home to Co-burg but they will find the visitors'strength and determination toomuch to overcome.

Ivanhoe trail Monash Universityby one and a half games and per-centage but they have a homeground advantage, together with arough chance of getting the doublechance for the finals. With SteveGiles and Mark Hodge in form Imust go for Monash.

I have left the most difficult gameuntil last. On form University Bluesshould beat Ormond, but Ormondsuffered a bad defeat ;at the handsof North Old Boys last week andwill be keen to make amends. This ,

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-JULY 17, 1976

combined with their home groundadvantage, has convinced me toselect Ormond.

SELECTIONS - North Old Boys,University Blacks, Coburg, MonashUniversity, Ormond . - PETERNATHAN .

JUNIOR SECTION 2What a day of surprises Round

12 provided in Junior Section 2.The two leaders were beaten con-vincingly . As I write I feel like thelion in the Wizard of Oz as I toolacked the courage of my convic-tions last Saturday .

Undaunted, I must continue totry to select five winners today .

Caulfield Grammarians disap-pointed last Saturday . They wiltedbadly as West Brunswick appliedpressure and their players' earsmust still be ringing from the sting-ing reprimand delivered by GeorgeVoyage at lemon time .

The double chance and with itpromotion opportunity is at staketoday for Caulfield who should beable to defeat Alphington, battlingout their first season .

The match of the round will beplayed at St. Bernard's where WestBrunswick are the visitors. St .Bernard's bounced back last weekwith a victory albeit one over thebottom side .

On the other hand West Bruns-%vick really hit top form with aten goal burst in the third quarter.Confidence is now high in theMagpie nest and bearing in mindtheir May 15 victory over St.Bernard's I am confident WestBrunswick can take the pointstoday.

The clash of the brown and goldsides at Thomastown could prove atorrid afternoon for the visitorsfrom Kew. Thomasown will winand Kevin Rodgers will be out toinsure each of his Thomastownplayers gives all to erase memoriesof last week's loss .

Giant killers Old Paradians makethe journey to Geelong . If thefinals were played in July, OldParadians would be pennant fa-

vourites. I tip a big win for thevisitors as Old Paradians strive tobuild percentage.

Reservoir Old Boys still havefinal's aspirations and despite theirA Section side borrowing playersthey should record a victory overDe La Salle today on the BarlingReserve .

SELECTIONS - Caulfield Gram-marians, West Brunswick, Thomas-town, Old Paradians, Reservoir OldBoys. - NORM NUGENT.

LOOKING BACK BY NOEL RUNDLE

5 years ago - 197 1200 games to John (Egg) El liott

the first Old Carey player to reachthat number . Captain from 1962to 1965, John won the Best andFairest trophy in the club's 1961premiership team .

A double century also to DennisDavies of St . Kevin's Old Boys -as the scribe said "a bachelor gay,he is believed to be losing hisgrip of late" .

Collegians and M .H.S.O.B. stageda "relegation-saver" game withHigh kicking 5.2 to 1 .2 in the thirdquarter to seal the game and winby 19 points .

Collegians suffered a setbackwhen Vice-Captain, Phil Pryor wascarried off unconscious on a stret-cher and taken to hospital after anaccidental blow to the head .

Vengeance was Old Trinity'swhen they easily defeated Assump-tion, 21 .9 to 8.8 at ElsternwickPark . Fletcher, G . Fellows ( 5 goals)and Emerson were best whileStevens and Phil Cohen eachkicked 6 goals .

10 years ago - 1966In the worst weather conditions

for some years, three leading teamswere defeated - Melbou rne High,Old Carey (on top in "D" Section)and AJAX, who suffered their firstloss for the season at the hands ofAssumption who lead all day andwon, 11.16 to 8 .6 .

Jackson, McMahon and Munari(Assumption) and Janover, Duzen-man, and Perelberg (AJAX) werebest. Surprise of the day wasbackman "Crash" McMahon's 2goals .

Top "C" Section sides, St. Ber-nard's and Old Brighton staged alow-scoring thriller with the homeside victors 5 .6 to 5 .5 .

Mudlarks were Reidy, K. Hamp-son, Mahoney (St . Bernard's) andBerry, Code, and D . Myers (OldBrighton).

Page 12

100 games up to John Taylor(Kew), Bruce Ferrall (A .M .P.).

Best "trueboot" performance ofthe round - Geelong's Guy L~Tilsonwith 6 goals against Preston .

25 years ago - 1951Commonwealth Bank continued

their hoodoo run over Ormond whotook a one-point lead in time-ononly to see Bank clear the balldown to a certain ruckman whoheld the mark of the day andcapped a magnificent display withthe winning goal.

(Gympie - 1951's press corres-pondent believed in anonymity -wi ll your archives give the ruck .man's name?)

Or as Ormond scribe, Dr. J, R.Porter, penned "The fickle dametransferred her affections in ourencounter with the Bank . A feichips light in that settlement". ColCampbell, Ron McFarlane, andLaurie Holman were Ormond'sbest.

In "B" Section Geelong held off adetermined finish by visitors Al-phington who kicked 3 goals anda poster in 4 minutes to get within7 points when Tom Russell torethrough to goal with a long punt,Alan Vizard, with clever scouting, kicked 4 goals for the home side ,

Another Carnival is over -(Continued from page 4)

It's hard to explain how Victoria lostcertainly injuries to several key

players didn't help their chances, andperhaps the hard game against WestAustralia three days previously (and itcertainly *as a vigorous one) had moreeffect than at first thought.

South Australia was certainly the betterside on the day - and that was whatcounted as far as the records areconcerned.

The fact that they just scraped homefrom West Australia and were not im-pressive against Tasmania, in contrast toVictoria's efforts against these two states,is of little concern .

The score book . shows that SouthAustralia won all three games and Vic-toria won only two . Our congratulationsto them .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 17, 1976

UMPIRE'S C ORNERBy KEVIN McKAY

~Reply to "F" section club 19-6-76 -1, you are quite correct, the coach o f

eam is NOT permitted to act as anne r

., . X gai ngain you are right, any playerne part in the game must have his

ne and correct number on the team

Itcply to "B" section coach 3-7-7 61 Re centre square - If a player

ehcentreopponen t

e at a centre bounce ,ne boundary umpire does not blow hisrhistle - He tells the offending player

" cut it out" and he must also tellhe field umpire when he gets the op-

- ,, rtunity - there is no penalty againsthe player pushed over the line .1 2, ;,Io - an umpire cannot report an„iTence he does not see - it is similar

tfi'e awarding of a free kick - h e;vust see the infringement - so also

n ust see the reportable Incident -e niust not report what he thinks may

nace occurred .An interesting rule 18 which reads

N o free kick shall be given against a, ;;iyer who, in legitimately going for anark, interferes with an opponent from~•ehind .

,~ otice the words "Legitimately goingor a mark ." If a player is not legi-»ately going for a mark" he is open to-enalty if he interferes with the playerr},ine to mark the ball .'Therefore the opponent flying intohe air with a clenched fist takes theisk of a penalty.Hc surely can't be "legitimately try-

to mark" with a clenched fi st . The,p oiler takes all the chances of beingir'e kicked .Holding the" man - means a player

„ith tine ball must be held firmly enoughstop him or retard his progress -

Retarding does not mean completely

stopping, to check or ease down a man'sprogress is sufficient .

Take the instance of a 10 stone mantrying to stop a man of some 15 stone .He could "retard" him but the odds arehe would not stop him .

Do you, know? That the free kick for deliberately

forcing the ball "out of bounds" wasintroduced as far back as 1922 ?

That in 1930 the Football Counciladopted the principle of allowing asubstitute for an injured player.

In .1921 the Williamstown v Footscray(V .F .A .) final match was abandoned dur-ing the third quarter on account of aterrific hailstorm .I

'Social"Many umpires are at present spending

Sunday mornings on the goif course, preparing for our annual Golf Champion-ship ;at Torquay .

David Dressing is again in control ofthe arrangements and is now acceptingentries . This - is one day during theseason that is for all the family.David is again allowing us to use the

"dressing shed" beach house for ourbarbeque.

The date is Sunday July 25th - if youcan't play golf, it doesn't matter -come along and learn from the masters- or go direct to the house for lunch -

Tee time is 10 .00 a .m . to 11 .00 a .m .Lunch time is when you are hungry .All umpires and their families are in-

vited to join in this day.

Old Trinity `congratulates Rob Peers onreaching his 50th, game last week . Robplayed his first full season in 1974 and hasbeen a key member of the side eversince . So far he has won the club's Bestand Fairest (1975), been runner-up(1974), and won the best first year player(from the school) trophy (1974) . Hehas also been a member of four finalsides, including the 1974 B-Grade Premier-ship team. Rob is a very skilful player, and has the ability to take a big grabfrom a leap .' . He is also capable of thelong kick straight through the middle . Sofar he has scored 59 goals for the Firsts .Well done, "B .B . "

The ball officially approved for use inall V.F.L. matches since 1 897.

All players and officials of UniversityHigh would like to congratulate RossPaterson on reaching his 50 games . Rosswho has been with the club for 3 yearsis an "enthusiastic" member of our Re-serve team. He has played in many po-sitions, but mainly on the wing or half-forward flank . He is preferred in thesepositions because of his "quick-dropkick" disposal of the ball . Congratula-tions on reaching your 50th game andhope there will be many more, Ross .

A tough summer trainingprogramme saw Barry lose excess weight, and his inclusion in the senior team asyet unbeaten, has been justified by hisgood form . the value of your dolla rThis free book proves it.Let's face it. You've worked hard for your money . And it's

a bit disturbing to see its value being eroded away so quickly. That's why this free book "Your money and your life", is sovaluable right now. It's 160 pages long (with some blank spaces

for notes) and it wouldbe good value at a coupleof dollars . But seeing thebook is free, it's a must. It's a practical homereference on personalmoney matters ; like buyingand financing a home, buying a new or used car, taxes, life assurance, probate . And a stack ofother subjects.

We don't claim tohave an instant cure forinflation, but we cansoften the blow with thisbook. And that's agood start .

GREAT ACHIEVEMENTBY COLLEGIANS VETERAN -

300 GAME SWell known Amateur sportsman and

Collegians personality Bruce Fergusontoday joins an elite band of footballerswho have played 300 games . Bruce be-gan his career at Collegians way backin 1960 when leather stops were avant-garde . He has played most of his gameswith the seniors and in 1966 representedVictoria . For the last few years Brucehas been captain-coach of CollegiansReserves who were runners-up last yearand Bruce, with 51 goals, was leadinggoal kicker in B Reserves - a verycreditable performance for an ex-back-man .' Off the field Bruce has been an ener-

;;etic worker and participator in all clubactivities . He is also responsible forCollegians having the best pie and

pastie cuisine in Amateur Football . Every-body at Collegians wishes "Fergie" everysuccess in his 300th game and hopefullythe _ Reserves will finish the seasonstrongly and win for him a greatly, de-served flag .

Bruce broke our previous club recordof -245 games in 1973 and he looks likeplaying many more games because, aseverybody knows, the first 300 are thehardest.

150 GAMES FORALPHINGTON STALWART

Peter "Rocky" Hartigan last weekplayed his 150th game for Alphington.Peter's feat was not recorded then as, aback injury had kept him idle forseveral games. A former top ruckman andtrophy winner with the Juniors he ad-vanced to the seniors and has given theclub sterling service over the years .
