When you choose DSU you become part of tight knit family. Senior wrestler and exercise science ma-jor Cameron Schrempp explains, “Dickinson State University has smaller class sizes where the teachers pay attention to you and help you out when you are in need. The coaches work hard to figure ways to help us get better. The team has good camaraderie who are well lead by the captains. It’s a positive environment at DSU”. At DSU, we know that students learn better when they are in a safe, comfortable environment - a place where they care about others and others care about them. Over 75% of our classes having fewer than 30students so it is easy to see why faculty devel-op special interest in their students’ welfare.
Residence halls feature free cable and big screen TVs in the lounges, free laundry facilities, micro-fridge rentals, video libraries, wireless Internet access and a host of other services. The Dickinson community lies only 30 miles from Theodore Roosevelt National Park along I-94, and is just an hour drive to Lake Saka-kawea. The community is served by both commercial air and bus transportation. Outdoor recreation is just outside your door with hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, golfing, fishing, hunting, off-roading, horse-back riding, camping, boating, and a host of winter activities including snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and hockey.
DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY a great place to call home
It is the goal of the Human Performance Center (HPC) to challenge all athletes to achieve their maximum potential through safe, proven methods.
In its tenth year of existence, the HPC has trained thousands of DSU varsity intercollegiate athletes. During that time, the Ben C. Frank Human Performance Center has earned a reputation as one of the regions finest training facilities with its state-of-the art training programs for athletes of all sports, ages and skill levels.
In addition, DSU was the first University in the United States to incorporate the Frappier Acceleration Program into its offseason training program.
Current training programs to be offered to area athletes include the Acceleration Program, Distance Plus, Weight Training, Ground Based Training and Sport Specific Training.
Blue HawkWRESTLING PROGRAM
In the fall of 1959, President Delong decided to begin a wrestling program at DSU. In 1999, President Lee Vickers and his administration showed their commit-ment to Blue Hawk athletics by making way for a new wrestling complex. The complex is a two-mat room with bikes, treadmill and a state of the art video room. The team also has the $100,000 weight room/accel-eration room adjacent to the wrestling complex.Since the inception of the Blue Hawk program, formally known as the Savages, 96 individuals have been crowned All-Americans. DSU has consistently finished in the top 10 of the NAIA National Tourna-ment. Since coach O’Donnell came to DSU in the 1994-95 season, five individuals have won national titles and 65 All-Americans have been crowned. For his efforts, O’Donnell was named coach-of-the-year in 1998, 1999, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The program has grown into a very effective machine – producing highly successful athletes.
DSU accomplishes it’s success by giving opportunities to each wrestler to reach individual goals. The Blue Hawks carry approximately 40 wrestlers in the pro-gram. The whole team is taken to tournaments to give them mat time. In our Division, each team can take 12 qualified wrestlers to the national Tournament. This means we take our 12 best wrestlers no matter the weight class. DSU has produced several all-ameri-cans at the same weight in the same year.
“The Dickinson State University wrestling program has put me in a position to achieve
my goals both on and off the mat.” BRAD STEELE
