The children are really getting into their class routines and feeling much more “at home” now. Starting a new routine (even if you’ve done it before) is never easy. It’s a process and it takes time…no way around it! They say it takes 21 days to form or replace a habit, and that’s not considering a 2-day or 3-day schedule! Let’s all keep that in mind and have grace with our children (and ourselves) throughout this adjustment period. This is our first Pathways Primer for this school year, and I have the privilege of communicating some important things with you in my article each month. One of the important things we do at the beginning of the year is our “Preschool for Parents” night that will happen on Tuesday, September 25 th from 7-8pm. This is a parent-only event so go ahead and schedule your babysitter now. The teachers will host you in their classrooms and give you an idea of your child’s typical day and what he or she does at school. Most importantly, teachers will explain how and why we do things the way we do, and how your child is learning all day through play, through different activities, and through their daily routine. The other thing I wanted to mention is a change to the DSISD Calendar that was released at the beginning of school and consequently, a change to our Pathways calendar. All DSISD Elementary Schools will have an early release for staff development at 12:00pm on four Tuesday afternoons during the school year (10/2, 12/4, 2/5, and 4/2). Pathways will observe an early release at 11:30am for staff development/teacher training on two of those scheduled days- October 2 nd and April 2 nd . All children need to be picked up at 11:30am on those two days, and there will be no Extended Day available as all teachers will be participating in staff development. The other DSISD early release days in December and February will be regular school days at Pathways. We realize this is a change to the calendar and affects many schedules (for both families and staff), but it was a surprise to us at the beginning of school as well. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. The Pathways staff spent a good deal of time reading, thinking, and talking about the extravagant, reckless, love of God this summer. God’s love that is full of wonder, whimsy, and adventure is also “with us” in Jesus every day. We hope to be the hands and feet of that love each day with your children at school. Blessings, Mrs. Fernandez

Science Scoop

Welcome to all of you! I am having a grand time getting to meet and to become reacquainted with your children. I love teaching science to young children; the look on their faces when they make discoveries, the shouts of “I did it”, their joy when it’s Science Day...these are some of the best things ever. My hope is that I can meet the challenge their curiosity presents to me; I will try my best. This years discoveries will include color, recycling, baby chicks, rockets, density, sinking and floating, our infamous T-zone, and much, much more. Thanks so very much for sharing your small treasures with me this year.

This year in Music & Movement, we have a monthly theme based on a fundamental musical concept. The theme for September is Beat. We start out learning simple fingerplays, like “Two Little Blackbirds”, and nursery rhymes, like “Baa Baa Black Sheep”, then repeat those words while clapping the beat. We then play with different beats and rhythms on our instruments: shakers, rhythm sticks, and later this month, sandpaper blocks. Fun games for keeping the beat include “Little Red Caboose”, in which we take turns keeping the beat with the sandpaper blocks and our feet, and “Engine, Engine”, in which we play around with different tempos (speeds). I look forward to lots of fun and learning with your children this year!
