DSX-1 Performance-Series Rear Cross-Connect Panels for Connectorized NE Circuits Installation Guide1.1 OverviewTelect offers DSX-1 Performance Series Cross-Connect Panels with 56, 64, or 84 circuits featuring wire-wrap cross-connections and either connectorized or wire-wrapped NE cabling. Telect has a Performance Series Panel to fit any CO circuit count, designation, or cable format. Telect’s Performance Series Panels are the functional foundation of concentration lineups requiring either front or rear cross-connect access.

Shown below are Performance Series Rear Cross-Connect Panels with connectorized rear-side NE cabling: both 64- and 84-circuit panels fit either 19- or 23-in. EIA or WECO racks.

Models 010-2164-0010 and 010-2184-0010 are white panels accommodating network-element, connectorized cabling and wire-wrap cross-connection, all on the rear. Cross-connect pinfield features T and R (tip and ring) pins and a a tracer lamp (TL) pin for each circuit.

Each of the 64 or 84 circuits contains Bantam-style jacks at the front of the panel for temporary patching during maintenance or redirecting I/O circuit during troubleshooting. Output signals can be monitored at the Bantam monitor port. Jacks are labeled as follows:

• MON is used to monitor and test the output of the network element connected at the rear of the circuit. The tracer lamp blinks at both ends of the cross connection for 30-to-60 seconds and then stays on while the output circuit is being monitored. Monitoring and test-ing is non-intrusive.

• OUT and IN are the outputs and inputs of that network element. Use these Bantam ports for temporary patching. (I/O temporary patching is intrusive.)

Tracer lamps are located above the jack field.

Near the front corners of all panels are pull-out circuit designation cards.

On the rear, the pinfield is used for wire-wrapping cross-connections (XCs). The removable XC trough below the XC pinfield allows for convenient access to NE cabling during initial phases of wiring.

The XC trough guides XC wiring to the rear corners where 4 in. by 4 in. (Nominal outside dimensions. Inside dimension of rings is 3.75 in. x 3.75 in.) routing rings direct circuit wiring up and down the rack.

1.1.1 Applications

High-density CO environments and for DCS interfaces where vertical and horizontal expansion and adaptability are required. Lineups with 64-, and 84-circuit Performance Series Panels offer the highest-density DSX-1 in the industry.

1.1.2 Features

• Highest ever DS1 termination in minimal space (2RU, 1RU = 2 in.) provides 43% increase in DS1 circuit density over 7-in. high legacy products.

• Circuit multiples match industry-standard SONET OC3, 12, 48 and 192 systems.

• Telect's patented Dedicated Digital Jacks is backed by Telect's DSX lifetime warranty.

• Nonintrusive circuit access, testing, patching, and monitoring are available at the highest density connectivity.

• Industry-standard design enables the use of all legacy Bantam patch cords. (See “1.6 Acces-sories” on page 18.)

• Panels provide easy access to rear-side NE cabling and front-side cross-connections.

1.3.1 Installing the Panel

Procedure steps:

1. Before installing the panel, remove the XC wiring trough on the rear of the panel, as shown on the right.

2. For circuit designation 1A-28A/1B-28B/1C-28C (rath-er than 1-84) on 84-Circuit Performance Series Pan-els (Model 010-2184-1010) only, apply the circuit des-ignation decals (supplied), as instructed. See “1.3.2 Designating 84-Circuit Panels With 1-28A/1-28B/1-28C Nomenclature” on page 9, then continue with this procedure.

3. For flush mounting panel to front rack flange, proceed as follows.(For 2-in. off-set mounting on the front rack flange, see “1.3.2 Offset Panel Mounting” on page 12, then continue with this procedure.)

• For a 19-in rack,

a. Use the four #12-24 thread-cut-ting screws (provided, two per side) to install panel to rack. as shown on the right.

b. Torque the #12-24 screws to 35 in.-lb (4.29 N•m).

c. Install the right and left rings at rear corners using the #6-32 flathead screws provided.

• For a 23-in. rack,

a. Use the four #12-24 thread-cut-ting screws (provided, two per side) to install the two 19-in. to 23-in. flange adapters to the panel, as shown.

b. Use the four remaining #12-24 thread-cutting screws (two per side) to install the panel with the flange adapters to the rack.

c. Torque the #12-24 screws to 35 in.-lb (4.29 N•m).

d. Install right and left rings at the rear corners using the #6-32 flathead screws provided.

WARNING !

WARNING! Failure to properly ground this equipment can create hazardous conditions to installation personnel and to the equipment.

ALERT!ALERT! Only use components and crimping tools approved by agencies or certifying bodies recognized in your country or region such as Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL), TUV, etc.

4. Grounding is required. Use a listed (approved) crimping tool to attach a listed (approved), single-hole com-pression lug for a #8 stud onto 14 AWG ground wire.

5. Connect the lug using the innermost of the two #8-32 KEPS nuts provided on the chassis ground stud, as shown in Figure 7.

6. Tighten the innermost KEPS nut to ~17 in.-lb (~1.92 N•m).

7. If CO policy requires that shield ground be tied to chassis ground, in-stall a 24 AWG drain wire between the S. GND screw terminal and chassis ground. (On the chassis ground stud secure wire be-tween the two KEPs nuts provided on the chassis ground stud.)

8. Tighten the outermost KEPS nut to ~17 in.-lb (~1.92 N•m).

Telect recommends that shields be grounded at one, but not both, end of NE cabling and patch cords.

9. For powering tracer lamps, prepare -48Vdc BATT and RTN feeds by crimping fork or ring compression lugs, suitable for a #6 screw, onto suitably long 24 AWG (min.) wires.

10. Connect the end prepared in Step 9 to the power terminals shown in the illustration. Dress the opposite end and connect to a power distribution unit output fused at 1.33A (max).

11. Connect NE I/O T1 cables (24 AWG Preferred), each with a right-angle Amphenol-style, 64-pin, male connector, to the input and output connectors on the rear of the panel, as shown in Figure 11.

The cables can be fed from the top down or bottom up.

NOTE: Normally input cables go to the right rear corner, as indicated in the following illustration, and the output cables to the left rear corner. Always follow operating company guidelines.

12. Use a flat-tipped screwdriver to secure the inboard end of the male-female connection.

13. Use cable ties at the outboard ends of the connectors.

14. Use cable ties at either the rear corner anchors or at the rack’s rear flange holes.

15. Use lacing or cable ties to secure the cable along the rack’s channel.

16. After finishing NE cabling in a panel, re-attach the XC trough.

If possible, finish installing all panels and NE cabling in a rack before installing cross-connect wiring.

17. Install cross-connects, as shown in the following illustration for an 84-circuit panel.

Consult the tables in Section “1.5 Connection Tables” on page 15 for NE versus cross-con-nect pinout assignments.

18. Fit XC wires into fanning strips below the pinfield and then along the trough.

19. If possible, run half of the wiring to the left-rear corner ring and the other half to the right corner ring.

20. As cross-connects are assigned, record assignments on the circuit designation decals provided. When finished, affix self-adhesive labels to both sides of the two pull-out designation cards.

Prevent wiring conjestion in the trough by running XC I/0 wiring for Circuits 1-42 to the right-rear rings and wiring for Circuits 43-84 to the left-rear rings.

1.3.2 Designating 84-Circuit Panels With 1-28A/1-28B/1-28C Nomenclature

Procedure steps:

1. Find the adhesive-backed circuit designa-tion decals, shown on the right.

2. Carefully peel off the 1A-through-14B label from the FRONT JACK FIELD decal and affix over the 1-through-42 designations above the front jack field, as shown in Fig-ure 12, following.

Similarly, apply the 15B-through-28C label.

1.3.2 Offset Panel Mounting

Telect manufactures brackets to extend the panel 2 inches beyond the rack flange. (See “1.6 Accessories” on page 18.) To install the extension brackets and the panel, proceed as follows.

Procedure steps:

1. Install right and left rings at the rear corners of the panel using the #6-32 flathead screws pro-vided, as shown below.

2. Use #12-24 thread-forming screws (provided) to mount extension brackets to the front rack flanges, as follows:

• For a 19-in. rack, mount extension brackets as shown below.

• For a 23-in. bracket, fasten two 19-in. to 23-in. flange adapters between extension brack-ets and rack flange, as shown.

3. Using two people, one at the front of the rack (with the four remaining #12-24 Phillips head thread-cutting screws and fastening tool) and one at the rear of the rack, tilt the panel and pass it through the rack, as shown below.
