YOUDSCAN

DSUWhat’s in it for you?

Delaware State University was founded in 1891 as one of the country’s first land-grant institutions. Since then we have

grown and evolved into one of the premier Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the country, perennially

positioned among the best of the best in national rankings.

DSU offers 53 bachelor’s, 25 master’s and five doctoral degree programs across 21 academic departments; passionate,

hands-on, expert faculty; and an intimate 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio. There are also study abroad opportunities on

nearly every continent to enhance your learning experience, and local internship and mentoring programs with

top-tier businesses.

We are a close-knit community situated among 350 acres of historic buildings and sprawling green spaces. Located in

Delaware’s historic capital city of Dover, it’s an ideal environment to learn without the distracting bustle an urban setting

can sometimes create. Yet, you’re still just a short way from Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.; nearby Rehoboth,

DE, and Ocean City, MD, beaches; and Dover’s many cultural amenities—all conveniently accessible by car or public transit.

Our diverse and vibrant student body is composed of a 67 percent African-American population, with Caucasian, Hispanic,

Asian and international students making up the balance. This includes students from 31 states, our nation’s capital, the

Virgin Islands and 27 countries. In fact, a full 47 percent of students come from outside the state of Delaware. And more

than half the student population lives on campus.

Collectively, it’s a unique blend of curriculum, programs and life experiences designed to prepare you for the professional

world. At the same time, it’s an education that goes beyond books and classrooms to build individuals of character and

strong values.

Named 1890 Land-Grant Institution of the Year by theAssociation of Public and Land-Grant Universities

CANTransform your future

Your future is waiting. What will you make of it?

It’s more than an opportunity to become part of a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) legacy that spans 123 years. It’s a chance to build a legacy of your own. To walk a path of growth, discovery and transformation.

Because it’s not just about what you learn here, but what you can then do with that knowledge. This is your invitation to achieve, your license to succeed. Walk with us. And join a league of agile-minded big thinkers who challenge boundaries and change the world.

“Delaware State University’s diverse offerings of degree programs reflect the high standard of excellence that the University

requires of its faculty, researchers and staff to ensure that you will be in an optimal position to make the most of your

higher educational opportunities at DSU and reach your aspirations. It is our visionary mission to not only produce graduates

who will become the next generation of leaders within a global market context, but also to ensure that our students see

themselves in such positions and are equipped with the knowledge and professional skills to make that a reality.”

CANThink big

This is not just an education. It’s an opportunity. It’s knowledge that opens doors and builds bridges to bright, meaningful futures.

It’s time to follow your heart and mind. Explore your interests and turn them into passions. We’ll provide the immersive curriculum and exposure to the latest techniques and technologies so you can follow your studies at many levels—with like-minded students and faculty who get as excited about learning as you do. People who will guide you, push you, inspire you to do more and go further than you ever thought you could.

DSU’s Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business

(AACSB) International accreditation sets us apart in the

international business education arena. Only 5 percent of business

schools worldwide have earned this distinction. But that’s just one

of the many ways we offer a competitive advantage for employment

and careers in business.

You will find a remarkable range of studies at DSU, from majors in

hospitality and tourism management, sport management and aviation,

to concentrations in finance and banking and casino operations

management. In every discipline, our world-class faculty and

professional advisors are focused on academic excellence through

innovation, professional development and personal advisement.

We provide tools and assets to enhance your learning experience

and help you succeed–like our own 11-plane fleet of aircraft and a

new on-campus flight simulator; international learning opportunities

and multicultural teachers to support global employment; as well as

expanded student internship and COOP opportunities with leading

businesses and government agencies.

DSU’s partnerships with Barclays, JPMorgan Chase, WaWa, DuPont and Delmarva Power create powerful internship opportunities for our students.

motivated me to become more active within my major and be more active in social settings. Companies look for students

DSU offers Delaware’s only programs for Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW), accredited through the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Ongoing research projects range from Teaching Strategies for Students with Disabilities to Exercise Physiology.

College ofEducation, Health and Public Policy

DSU’s immersive, experience-based programs help you develop

skills and understanding at a deeper level. You’re not just

learning in the classroom, you are engaging with the community.

For example, we offer service learning opportunities in health

education, an on-campus early learning lab and interactions at local

schools, as well as the opportunity to engage in clinicals at area

hospitals and health centers.

As an HBCU, we afford students a unique perspective on minority

issues associated with education, health care and society today. As

a leading university, we offer exposure to high-tech tools, students

from all over the world, and the kind of education that prepares

you to work and lead in your field.

If you’re looking for cutting-edge education, facilities and research,

you’re in the right place. Three of our physics and engineering

professors have been named senior members of esteemed societies.

One of our associate professors was also recently recognized by

the Delaware Bioscience Association for his performance as a

top educator. We have added a new degree program in Electrical

and Electronics Engineering Technology, available in Fall 2015;

received $400,000 in new electrical engineering software; and are

finishing a new optics facility (to open in 2015), which will serve as

an entrepreneurially-driven, intellectual think tank and center for

interdisciplinary cross-collaboration.

And then there are the grant-funded research and training

opportunities, including a five-year, $10.5 million research grant from

the National Institutes of Health that funded the establishment of the

Delaware Center for Neuroscience Research on campus.

Needless to say, it’s an exciting time for STEM education at DSU.

College of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology 14

“The biggest preparation [for graduate studies] was having the

opportunity to do a lot of undergraduate research at DSU, and

equally important were the opportunities to present that research.

It really helped to have the chance to start developing those skills

as an undergraduate, and the department really worked to

emphasize them.”

Study Abroad

DSU exchange programs enable you to enrich your

international culture and academic experiences through

study abroad opportunities just about anywhere on the

planet—with the exception of Antarctica. For example,

you might pursue music, mathematics or science in China;

agriculture in Panama and Ghana; or study business in

South Korea.

Honors Program and Housing

The Honors Program is designed to create and nurture a

community of academically bright and talented students

who value—and are committed to—excellence in their

intellectual pursuits. This program provides opportunities

to engage in classroom processes that minimize the

traditional lecture/note-taking format, and instead utilize

methods of colloquia and symposia that encourage active

intellectual participation, discussion and involvement in

the search for knowledge.

Members of the Honors Program all reside together

in a single dorm on campus where they can connect

and interact both academically and socially. This

arrangement makes it easy for students to work

together on class projects, but also creates a powerful

sense of community where strong and lasting

friendships are formed.

For more information, visit desu.edu/honors-program

Learning Communities

DSU offers incoming freshmen two unique options

designed to help make the transition from high

school to college life a little easier by giving you the

opportunity to form friendships quickly with other new

students who share similar interests and goals, and

build connections with faculty and advisors. You can

join a Learning Community, where you’ll be linked with

fellow students in a few courses based on an interest,

topic or theme. Or, as a member of a Living-Learning

Community, you live, learn, study and socialize with

fellow members in the same residence hall. In either

case, it’s a powerful way to establish your sense of

belonging on campus right from the start.

For more details, please visit desu.edu/

learningcommunities.

The Honors Program at DSU is a key component of our Living-Learning Communities, where select students live together in a single dorm.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. STUDENT CENTERCANBelong

Because when you become part of something bigger than yourself, it becomes part of you, as well.

As a DSU student, you are part of a history that spans more than a century. A history of tradition, culture and transformational change. A history of discovery and self-realization.

DSU is a place that welcomes and challenges you. That celebrates hard work and achievement with equal enthusiasm. That encourages you to ask questions and strengthens your resolve to find answers. A place that makes you both wiser and more daring.

To share this experience with people you care about—and who care about you—is the stuff memories are made of. It’s the stuff that life is made of.

Campus Life

With over half of the student population living on-site, DSU’s

campus is brimming with cultural and geographic diversity.

This rich and vibrant community supports more than 100

student organizations that are as unique as each student,

from fraternities and sororities to student-run radio and TV

stations and even a gospel choir.

Without question, one of the most active locations on

campus is the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center.

This facility is home to a bookstore, convenience store,

game room, take-out restaurants including Chick-fil-A

and Subway, as well as a commuter student lounge and

offices for student organizations and staff.

If you work out, the Wellness and Recreation Center

features basketball courts, fitness and weight-training

areas, an elevated running track, group fitness classes,

a swimming pool and more.

Housing Options and Amenities

Seven residence halls and two apartment complexes offer a wide

range of on-campus housing options. Most residence hall rooms

are double occupancy, with select halls providing suite-style

accommodations. Upperclassmen and international students reside

in the University Village and University Courtyard apartments,

offering one-, two- and four-bedroom options. All rooms and

apartments are fully furnished and equipped with both cable

TV and Internet access. Each building has its own laundry room

and vending machines. Communal lounges and recreation rooms

create space and opportunities to meet and interact with other

students. Housing assignments for freshmen are random based on

a first-come, first-served basis. However, we do accept specific

residence hall and mutual roommate requests and strive to honor

them whenever possible, depending on room availability.

For more information, please visit desu.edu/housing.

Living Here 22

Student OrganizationsWith a dizzying array of student groups, clubs and organizations, the DSU campus is a great place to

get involved, connect with others who share your passions or try something you’ve never done before.

From fraternities and sororities to musical groups, student media, fashion, performance and dance, the list

of social options goes on and on. Academic associations like the Accounting and Finance Club and the Public

Relations Student Society of America offer valuable experience and networking opportunities. You can get

involved in the Student Government Association, take part in your residence hall council, join spiritual or

cultural groups, or even start a student organization of your own.

The Office of Student Leadership and Activities also coordinates community service opportunities, programs

for off-campus students, workshops and more. Through organizations including the Student United Way and

Rotaract Club, DSU students contribute thousands of community service hours in Delaware.

The truth is it’s up to you. There is no wrong time to believe in yourself. This is your moment. And the future you decide to create begins now.

Each day, the future gets a little bit closer. What will yours look like? Will it be a future defined by growth, discovery, opportunity and success? Will you realize your full potential? How will you make your mark on the world?

Athletics

DSU is home of the Hornets–a fitting name for the swarm of

more than 300 student athletes who passionately compete in 18

NCAA Division I sports. The Hornets have proudly earned MEAC

Championship titles, regional and national titles, and All-Academic

honors. For student athletes, our state-of-the-art strength and

conditioning facility features a weight-training center that rivals

almost any Division I school. If you’re more into the game than the

competition, there’s no better way feel the Hornets’ buzz than a

football Saturday at Alumni Stadium. One resounding reason for that

is the Approaching Storm Marching Band—the heart and soul of DSU.

In addition to its popular dance-inducing halftime show, the Storm

has appeared in President Obama’s Inaugural Parade and countless

performances abroad, earning national and international acclaim.
