SmashingTimesandFrontLineDefendersaredelightedtohosttheDublinArtsandHumanRightsFestivaltoshowcaseandhighlighttheextraordinaryworkofhumanrightsdefendersinIrelandandaroundtheworld,pastandpresent,andtheroleoftheartsandartistsinpromotinghumanrightstoday.TheDublinArtsandHuman Rights festival will link the arts to civil society, active citizenship and politics through a series ofperformances,filmscreenings,music,danceandarts-basedworkshops,featuringguestspeakersandpaneldiscussionscelebratingandpromotingdignityandrespectforallpeopleequally.The festival runs forelevendays from the19 to29Septemberat a rangeof venues including theSamuelBeckettTheatre,ScienceGalleryDublin,dlrMillTheatreDundrum,BuswellsHotelandEUHouse.Thefestival iscuratedbyMaryMoynihan,ArtisticDirector,SmashingTimesandMichelleFoley,FrontLineDefenders.Arts Festival curatorMaryMoynihan says ‘SmashingTimesaredelighted topartnerwithFrontLineDefenderstohosttheinauguralDublinArtsandHumanRightsFestivalfromthe19tothe29September2019.Hostingthefestivalhasbeenalong-helddreamandwelookforwardtoengagingwithartists,activistsandcitizensofallagesaswecelebratetheextraordinaryworkofhumanrightsdefenders,pastandpresent,inIrelandandaroundtheworldandtheroleoftheartsandartistsinpromotinghumanrightstoday’.HighlightsfromThursday19September2019Events include EscapeRoutesandFreedomTrails – EuropeanSolidaritybetweenNations (19 September7.30pm, Samuel Beckett Theatre). This event offers theatre, film,music and panel discussions celebratingand remembering extraordinary stories of Irish andEuropeanmenandwomen involved in theResistanceand in ‘escape lines’– secretWorldWar IInetworks setup toassistAlliedsoldiersandcitizens leaveNazioccupiedterritoryduringWWII.Today,theescapelinesarerememberedinEuropeandbeyondas‘FreedomTrails’. The event remembers the escape lines and freedom trails as well as modern day experiences ofhumanrightsdefendersworkingoncivilianrescueoperationsinSouthernEurope(Greece,Italy,etc)today.HearaboutcourageousBelgiumwomanandhumanrightsdefenderAndréedeJongh,whosetuptheCometLine that saved over 800 Allied service men. Listen and watch the stories of courageous Irish men andwomenactiveduringWWIIincludingKatherineAnneMcCarthy,MaryCummins,CatherineCrean,MargaretKellyandSamuelBeckett.ArtistsandspeakersforthisuniqueeventincludeMaryMoynihan,writer,theatreand film-maker, Artistic Director of Smashing Times and Curator of the Dublin Arts and Human RightsFestival; JohnMorgan, Dublin lawyer and co-founder of the Basque Pyrenees Freedom Trails’ Association(BPFTA)andoneof thekeypeople to raiseawarenessof the involvementof Irishmenandwomen in theResistance, SOE, and Escape Lines, duringWWII; Eneko Aizpurua, award-winning writer, Basque Country,awardedtheTeneMujikaLiteratureGrant2019forthebookBidasoanGora,dueforpublicationin2020;andTrinitygraduateSeánBinder,fromCork,anAidWorkerwhospentover100daysinaGreekjailarisingfromhiswork volunteeringwith refugees. Seán is a rescue diver and trainedmaritime search and rescuer. Hevolunteered as a coordinator of civilian rescue operations, both on land and at sea, in Greece, in 2018.Despitecontinuedcooperationwiththeauthorities,Seánwasarrestedforhishumanitarianworkandspent106daysinpre-trialdetention.Thecaseremainsongoingandhefaces25yearsimprisonment.AmusicalhighlightoftheeveningisaperformanceofDon’tSeeAnyLinesbysinger/songwriterHilaryBowfeaturingHilaryBowandLiamÓMaonlaÍonvocals.ThesingleDon’tSeeAnyLineswasreleasedonWorldRefugee Day (20 June 2019) by Cork Singer/Songwriter Hilary Bow. The lyrics are inspired by Hilary’sfriendshipwithKurdishrefugeesandbyworkingwithpeoplewhohadarriveinIrelandseekingrefuge.ThesongisusedasacalltoendthedirectprovisionserviceinIrelandandimplementamorehumanesystemforpeoplearrivinghere. Joinus foranexcitingeveningthatexploresstoriesofsolidarity fromWWIIandhowEuropeancitizenscancometogethertopromotedemocracy,equalityandpeacetoday.

Duringtheafternoonof19September,from3-5pm,thefestivalisdelightedtowelcomeFrédériqueLecomtetoIrelandfromBelgium.FrédériqueisDirectoroftheBelgiancompanyTheater&Reconciliationandshewillpresent a full-lengthworkshop and talk about her extraordinary work and uniqueMethod for TheatricalPractice in Conflict Zones that shehaddevelopedusing creative processes to promote conflict resolutionandreconciliationintheCongo.HighlightsfromFriday20September2019The festival is delighted to present the Olivier award-winning play Silent by Pat Kinevane at the SamuelBeckett Theatre, on 20 September, 7.30pm. Silentis the touching and challenging story of homelessMcGoldrig,whooncehadsplendidthings.Buthehaslostitall–includinghismind.Henowdivesintothe wonderful wounds of his past through the romantic world of Rudolph Valentino. This stunningproductioniswrittenandperformedbyPatKinevaneanddirectedbyJimCulleton,Fishamble.‘Passionateone-man show… Mr Kinevane interprets Valentino’s highly theatrical screen presencetostunningeffect… carefullywrought production… [he] doesn’t just demand the audience’s attention,hecommandsit.’BenBrantley,TheNewYorkTimesOn20September2019,aninvitedaudienceof200youngpeoplewillenjoyaperformanceoftheacclaimedaward-winningTestimonies by Paul KennedyperformedbyKillian Filan and the international premier of anewshortfilmTheBigNobywriterFéilimJames.Inthisfilm,ayoungmantellsthestoryofhispsychologicalunravellingandsubsequentmentalhealthcrisis.Ashebattlesagainstpanicattacksandsuicidalthoughts,heis forced to face the ‘why’ofhisproblemsheadon, learning someessential truths abouthimself and theworld.HighlightsfromSaturdayandSunday28and29September2019Songsandmusichaveplayedapowerfulroleinhumanrightsmovementaroundtheworld,givingauniversalvoice, crossing barriers and promoting unity and equality. On 28 September at Science Gallery Dublin,participantscanattendasongwritingWorkshophostedbyFightingWordswheretheywillbeinvitedtolookatthehistoryofthesesongs,drawingonhumanrightsthemestocreatetheirownsongsrelevantfortoday'sgeneration.Whilenoprevious song-writingexperience is requiredparticipantsare free tobringalonganyinstruments or lyrical ideas they might have! This workshop is open to young people ages thirteen toseventeen.Following a screening of Thompson Reuters Foundations’ short film ‘Stonewall 50:Where next for LGBT+lives?’,heartoofromhumanrightsdefendersinDublintosharetheirexperiencesfightingfortherealisationofLGBTI+rightson29SeptemberatScienceGalleryDublin.Thesehumanrightsdefenderswill includeEricSambisaoftheNYASARainbowAlliance(NRA),Malawi–winnerofthe2019FrontLineDefendersAwardforHumanRightsDefendersatRiskforAfrica.EricisthefirstMalawiantocomeoutopenlyasgayonnationaltelevision. Also speaking is Dandara Oliveira, a trans-rights defender working to combat violence andviolationsagainstlesbian,bi-sexualandtranssexualwomenwhoaresurvivingtheconsequencesofcorporatemegaprojectsintheTransamazonandXinguregionsofBrazil.The festival, curated by Smashing Times and Front Line Defenders, raises awareness of the arts, humanrights,andtheimportanceofprotectingthosecourageousactivistswhodefendtheserights.Weengagewiththe arts and facilitate discussion and dialogue through thework of professional artists and activists fromIreland and around theworldworking in allmediums,with the aimof celebrating the arts and creativelypromotingandprotectinghumanrights,equalityandsocialjustice.
