Dublin Fire Brigade History Dublin Fire Brigade was officially brought into

being with the Dublin Corporation Fire Brigade Act of 1862.

Today the Brigade has over 900 personnel and is responsible for providing fire cover for Dublin City and County

Providing and an emergency ambulance service for much of Dublin

Operating a control room which responds it ambulances in Dublin and mobilises fire appliances in five counties.

Dublin Fire Brigade History Dublin which is a fast growing city of over 1

million people is situated on the east coast of Ireland at the mouth of the river Liffey.

The area of Dublin is over 922sq kilometres.

Under the 1981 Fire Services Act the local authority is charged with providing a fire service. Dublin City Council (formerly Dublin Corporation) runs this service on behalf of the 4 local authorities in Dublin.

Dublin Fire Brigade Training Centre

Dublin Fire Brigade Training Centre Michael O’Brien was a wealthy wholesale woollen

draper in Dublin. On his death in 1829 his estate went to his four

daughters. Bridget O’Brien, one of Michael’s twin daughters left part of her estate to the Archbishop of Dublin for the founding of a school and chapel for orphan boys to provide them with a good education.

In 1878, two years after Bridget’s death, Marino estate, the former seat of Lord Charlemont was purchased for £8,260. comprising of over 300 acres. 30 acres of land were reserved for the Institute and its surrounds.

This gothic style building commenced in 1880, was completed in 1882 and opened for the housing of boys in 1888. Mr. Liam T. Cosgrave, a former pupil of the school went on to become the President of Ireland.

Dublin Fire Brigade Training Centre Following the 1916 rising finances dwindled

and the O’Brien Institute began to fall into disrepair, the number of boys being catered for was reduced and eventually closed in 1979.

Dublin Fire Brigade Training Centre Dublin Fire Brigade purchased the building in

1981 in a poor state of repair to provide a dedicated place of training. Ms. O’Brien had stipulated in her will that this building would always be used as a place of learning, and this continues to this day.

The first Dublin Fire Brigade Recruits began training here in July 1985 and it continues today to be a very active and progressive Training Centre providing comprehensive fire-fighting and paramedic training encompassing all facets of this occupation.
