AMU Professor booked, suspended for molesting

Kashmiri student‘University filed a case against

the accused’: RegistrarNew Delhi, Dec 6: At a time when Parliament is discussing issue of women’s security, one more sexual harassment case has surfaced and this time a Professor in Aligarh Muslim University has reportedly harassed a Kashmiri female student sexually. Muhammad Shabbir, who is the chairman of department of Law in the University, was suspended yesterday. Late last evening, the father of the girl lodged a case at Civil Lines Police station against the professor under relevant sec-tions of the IPC, police said. On December 3, the girl, study-ing LLM, had filed a complaint alleging that the professor had indulged in sexual harassment when she met him in connection with a project report, AMU spokes-man Rahat Abrar said. The university authorities immediately referred the matter to the Women Complaint Cell and after preliminary inquiry the cell submitted its report yesterday.

Acting on the report, which found charges of the girl "prima facie correct", the authorities suspended the teacher. The accused teaches Women and Law as well as Criminal Law and Gender Justice in the AMU. He confirmed that a case has also been registered against the accused at Civil Lines police station under section 509, 354(A) and 354 of the IPC. When contacted Registrar Group Captain, Shahrukh Sham-sheed said that a female professor who is currently the Chairperson Women Cell has been appointed to probe the matter. “The tainted Professor had been suspended with immedi-ate effect. It is not for the first time that such allegations have been leveled against the tainted Professor but in past also an enquiry committee was con-stituted to probe his conduct,” he said adding that the tainted professor will face the music if proven guilty. CUK’s journalism deptt organizes guest lecturesSrinagar, Dec 6: The Department of Convergent Journalism, Cen-tral University of Kashmir (CUK) organized guest lectures on ‘Role of Archives, Recordkeeping in Journalism’ and ‘Importance of Visual Language and Cartoony in Journalism’ here. The lectures were delivered by Idrees Kanth, a Kashmir-based research scholar on South Asian History in Leiden University, Netherlands, and Malik Sajad, noted cartoonist working with Eng-lish Daily, Greater Kashmir. During his lecture, Idress Kanth high-lighted the importance of archives in the present times. He stressed on the role of journalist in recording the history. Cartoonist Malik Sajad, in his lecture focused on the importance of visual language and cartoons and the challenges faced by the art-ists in the Valley. While sharing his personal experience, he related the difficulties he faced during his career and also enlightened students about the emergence of art of graphic novels.
