The Center of Portugal
In the heart of the country, you can find a unique diversity of scenarios, from mountains and villages of granite and schist to pasture plain valleys with herds. By the sea, fishing villages and cosmopolitan beaches. And everywhere, centuries of old heritage proudly displaysthe history of the region. Some of these places are so important for humanity that they have been included in the UNESCO list of world heritage.
The Center of Portugal
Aveiro: Sun & Sea
The Atlantic Coast from Aveiro to Figueira da Foz is sublime: long sandy beaches with beautiful ocean scenarios where old fishing traditions still remain.Discover Aveiro and its Ria on board of a typical “moliceiro” boat or on foot through the paths of Art Nouveau or of Contemporary Architecture.
Don’t forget to taste the famous sweet eggs and end the day at the square Praça do Peixe, where you will find several restaurants and bars.
In the surrounding area of Aveiro, let yourself go in the Nature Reserve Dunas de S. Jacinto, in the Barra and Costa Nova beaches with its enchanting striped colourful houses and visit award-winning Ílhavo Maritime Museum.
Coimbra:The Students City
Knowledge and culture can be found in every monument of the city. The museums, churches and convents are living heritage of Portuguese history, which was the first capital of the country, after the independence.
The University of Coimbra is one of the oldest universities in Europe, dating from 1290. Its impact was universal, particularly during a period in which both Portugal and Spain were structuring their empires at a world scale with the expansion and sea discoveries.
If you’re travelling with your family, you must enter the fascinating world of Portugal dos Pequenitos (theme park for kids). But Coimbra isn’t only about tradition. It is a modern city with exciting icons such as Mondego Green Park, Pedro & Inês pedestrian bridge and several shops!
Tomar: Templar City
The city of Tomar was founded in the 12th century. It was conquered to the Moorish by Portugal’s 1st King Afonso Henriques in 1147 and donated to the Templar Order in 1159. Gualdim Pais, the Grand Master of the Order and the city’s mythical founder, laid the first stone of the Castle and Monastery that would become the Headquarters of the Order in Portugal.
The Templars ruled from Tomar a vast region of central Portugal which they pledged to defend from Moorish attacks. Tomar was especially important in the 15th century when it was a centre for Portuguese overseas expansion under Henry the Navigator, the Grand Master of the Order of Christ, successor organization to the Templars in Portugal.
Today, the Convent of Christ is one of the most remarkable monuments in the country, being included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage list since 1983.
Fátima:Miracle of Apparations
Fátima is one of the most important pilgrimage centres for the Catholic world. Each May 13th thousands of pilgrims head for the Altar of the World to kneel at the feet of Our Lady of Fátima, in one of the most impressive demonstrations of faith, peace and spirituality that the world assists, every year, since 1917.
On that day, at Cova da Iria, a few kilometres fromFátima, three little and humble shepherd children, Lúcia and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, saw a flash of light where now stands the Apparitions Chapel.
The Virgin asked them to pray a lot for the wellbeing of the world, and announced that She would return to that place on the next months, every 13th day. The last Apparition occurred in October, being watched by more than 70.000 pilgrims that witnessed the Miracle of the Sun. Fátima is presently considered by many as the Altar of the World, where thousands of pilgrims arrive, moved by the biggest strength of the world: faith.
Schist Villages
Located in the centre region of Portugal, the Schist Villages network spans throughout 16 districts and includes 27 villages. Ranging from small natural refuges to bigger parish heads, whether it’s the food, cultural events or simply arts & crafts you’re after, you’ll find the Schist Villages offering you the purest, unspoiled river beaches and nature paths.
The River becomes a canooeing track; a forest becomes a walking trail; an old tradition turns into a memorable event. Talk to the local people and share their traditions, their arts and stories.
Penela Village
The County of Coimbra was created after the Christian reconquest and his Governor ordered the castle to be built in the Penela settlement that was then repopulated giving birth to a Christian Borough. Penela was given its first charter by D. Afonso Henriques in 1137, even before the Portuguese independ-ence, making it one of the oldest villages in Portugal.

Roman Village of Rabaçal
Archeological excavations in Conímbriga uncovered a large part of its architectural design, allowing whoever visits the Ruins to see meticulous urban planning, concerned with every need: the forum, an aqueduct, business areas, industry and habitation, an inn, several baths, an amphitheatre and walls to surround and defend the city. In this set, a neighbourhood of wealthy houses contrasts in size, complexity of construction, as well as the sophistication of decoration to the insulae of the peasants.

Monumental Heritage of Santiago da Guarda
Further south is the Monumental Complex of Santiago da Guarda. It is made up of a tower and house of the Lord of the Manor from the 1500’s that was built above the roman village. In the middle of the 90’s, the city hall of Ansião bought the property, making its rehabilitation possible. Archeological work revealed a “pars Urbana” of a late Roman village of the 4th/5th Century where valuable mo-tive pavements were uncovered.
Throughout the whole of Hispania (presently the Iberian Peninsula), an intricate road network was created. The main objective of which was to control the area politically, economically andmilitary wise. One of the most important routes was from Olísipo to Bracara Augusta. It was 360km (244 miles) long and went past many important locations. The Romanization Axis tries to show places in the central region of Portugal where Roman occupation was present. They are the city of Conímbriga, the Roman village of Rabaçal, Castellum of Alcabideque and the Monumental Complex of Santiago da Guarda.
Alcabideque Water Spring
Besides the city infrastructures, it is important to note the 3km aqueduct, where the famous Castellum of Alcabideque can be found. This consisted of a water tower whose function was to take water up so that it could circulate on the aqueduct.
Goat and sheep farming as well as wine and olive production were the main agricultural activities of this area. These resources attracted Roman aristocracy at the end times of the Empire.
