Hello DuKane members! It’s March, and that means riding and voting! With the warmer weather, motorcycles are back on our roads here in Illinois. That means it’s time to spread the word that cagers need to put down their cell phones, open their eyes, and

START SEEING MOTORCYCLES! Let’s talk about the 2020 Primary Election. March 17th is Primary Voting Day here in Illinois, and I want to remind everyone how important it is to get out and vote! By now, you’ve all received (I hope) your state newsletter. In this issue is the A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois Voters Guide. It shows you how A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois PAC/FEDPAC graded all of the candidates and which candidates are endorsed. These grades and endorsements are based off of where they stand when it comes to A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois issues and the candidates’ voting/legislative history on said issues. Those issues are helmet laws, ethanol/E15, autonomous vehicles, off-road vehicles, lighting, motorcyclist profiling, and more. To get a good grade and/or endorsement from the A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois PAC/FEDPAC is NOT an easy thing to accomplish, and as it’s been proven in the past, they can be taken away if a candidate does something to hinder or hurt our rights and freedoms as motorcyclists/off-roaders/ATV riders in Illinois.

With that being said, I encourage you all to do your homework on your candidates and decide who will best represent you in the state house. Who is going to make your situation the best it can be for you? The A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois Voters Guide is just that, a guide. A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois does not tell you who to vote for. That is your right and freedom to choose your candidate, and A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois encourages that right and freedom. The most important thing is that you GET OUT AND VOTE! I hear a lot of people and candidates talk about term limits. Well, we have them. It’s called voting. If you don’t like a candidate, you can vote them out. But, you need to show up to the ballot box to do so. One of my biggest pet peeves is hearing someone bitch about a State Representative or State Senator and then say they didn’t vote in the election. In my opinion, if you want the right to complain, make sure you vote! So, on March 17

th, let your voices be heard.

Whether it’s a local county board chair race, United States Congress race, Illinois State Senator race, or others, VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!!! Just a reminder that we have the A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois State Raffle Tickets available for purchase. See you all on March 22

nd for the A.B.C. – A.B.A.T.E. Bowling Classic!

A Bit from the “ViP” This month my article is a joint collaboration with our membership and public relations officer, Linda. The Executive Board for A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois has asked each of their chapters to complete a simple survey about how we recruit new “blood” and retain our membership. Why are they asking? Our state membership numbers have been decreasing and retention is down. At 3/01/2019 the state count was 6,907 and at 3/1/2020 it has dropped to 6,325. We need to help DuKane and help our state team build the membership back up. We are above the curve and our numbers are actually better than most and our current member-ship is 311. Last year the count was about 289. However, our numbers were much more years ago. (March of 2017 was 379) I think our new renewal method via Square and the process Linda has put in place has really helped with our membership retention. Linda has volunteered to work with a State team on how to improve our recruitment and reten-tion. Grab your smart phone and compose a message to [email protected] in the subject line put “Survey” and answer the following questions the best you can. You don’t have to type the questions, just number the reply 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 and put your reply, or N/A if you don’t know or would rather not share. Your replies will be kept confidential, and I hope you re-spond. I’ve bet Linda that she’ll get at least 25 responses. Can you help a guy win a bet? 1) Do you ever try to recruit new members? 2) When recruiting new members what is your “sales pitch” or reason to join? 3) Do you know how we remind our members they need to renew? 4) Do you know why people are not renewing? 5) What support do you feel that your chapter needs from the state, if any? 6) Anything you want me to mention or say when putting this information together? Now for some exciting news! We have a new tool to help speed up the membership process when you are recruiting. The next time you are at a stop or just out and about and are speaking to a prospective member about the benefits of ABATE, you can simply give the person are web address, dukaneabateil.org (don’t forget the ORG) https://dukaneabateil.org . They can click on the Membership tab and follow the link for “Electronic Registration” which takes them to Square. https://dukane-chapter-abate-of-il.square.site/

DuKane ABATE 5 March 2020 www.abate-il.org www.dukaneabateil.org

Good weather Dukaners.

Legislative Day is Postponed for now... Due to concerns over the COVID 19 aka Corona Virus, the IL Secretary of State has prohibited large groups from assembling at the Capitol until further notice. As a result, the ABATE Legislative Day scheduled for March 25th has been postponed. We are working on possibly scheduling the event for May, but it will depend on conditions set by the Secretary of State.

We're still planting signs and going to events. Primary election is March 17, aka St. Patrick's Day. If you haven't already done so remember to vote on that day. If you're still undecided take a look at your state newspaper and see who's on our side. This guide is just that, a guide. ABATE does not tell you who you have to vote for (we're not a union) but rather a guide to help you make your decision. I'll be so glad when this primary season is over!!! At the same time I'm looking forward to the general election in November. We have something very exciting in the works for the general. Stay tuned for more information as it comes together. HB3851, the trailer fee bill is still in committee. We were hoping to move it along a little

quicker but remember, we're working on their time, not ours. Phone calls at this time are not helpful. We will let you know when to start making them again. Apparently there are some folks out there who are unable to make a phone call without making an ass of themselves. If you are calling a legislative office PLEASE BE POLITE and be mindful of who you represent and to whom you are speaking. Most times it will be a staffer on the other end and that person did nothing to deserve your ire. Our meeting date was changed to March 10; same place, same time. We were joined by Jamie Mosser for Kane County State's Attorney and Greg Elsbree for Kane County Board Chairman. Thank you for taking our questions.

I will see you at our ABC – A.B.A.T.E. Bowling Classic on March 22nd at the Bowlero on North Avenue, in Glendale Heights. Bring your friends and family for an evening of fun! $15 gets you in covering 2 games and shoe rental. If you are feeling competitive, join the 9 pin no tap tournament. All proceeds support our Downed Rider Fund. The 3 A.B.A.T.E. State Raffle bikes will be there on display as well. Legislative Day was postponed. If it is rescheduled I hope you will come down to Springfield, engage with your Legislators, and share our concerns as motorcyclists. See Patty Smith for details. We have been working hard on spreading the word of ABATE to our fellow sport bike riders. John Bloch and I have been attending Cycle Gear Bike Nights in Bolingbrook. It is early in the season, the turnouts have been very light, but we have established a great working relationship with the staff. During the riding season they have impressive turnouts for their events. Consider helping us out, 2

nd Tuesday of every month. The events are in

the evening, Cycle Gears address is 635 E Boughton Rd Unit 140, Bolingbrook. We are also working on establishing a relationship with MCC Motor Cycle Center Inc in Villa Park. I attended their Open House in February. Patty Smith and John Bloch joined me for their NEBDR Adventure Bike documentary film premiere later during February. The management has been welcoming and receptive to our presence. They have no specific events planned but they do let others use their lot. MCC will have an Antique Motorcycle Show there on Sunday August 16

th, hosted by the Chicago Norton Owners Club.

On March 1

st I went deep into Sport Rider territory and attended the Chicago United Riders

Winter Run III. That was an interesting day! My count was about 110 bikes had arrived, for a ride that was announced a mere 3 days before. I donned my ABATE cap, t-shirt, and sweatshirt. I wanted everyone, coming or going, to see the word ABATE. Many I spoke with many who were not aware of our existence. I passed out membership applications and gave brief descriptions of who we are and what we do for them. This will not be an easy task. It will take a strong long term commitment from all of us to make this work. Together we can make it happen! Go Forth and Ride! – Chris Newman DuKane A.B.A.T.E. Events Officer

Hey there, everyone! We recently had a major update to our website, and this update is a link to our new membership registration page! So if you need to register for or renew your membership and you don't have a checkbook, we have a more modern alternative: digital membership registration! It's a good feature for people my age because I, for one, have never written a check in my life and I tend to avoid snail mail. I would imagine many young adults don't use these things too often either. I am used to paying for things with either cash or a card, and this new registration method will enable everyone to use the latter. Our website and membership system have been modernized in a few different ways, but this work that Linda and I have done takes the cake! Nathan Klapatch

Coming soon to a road near you, finally! Spread the word.
