As I begin this newsletter, Year 12 VCE students are sitting their final exams. It has been good to hear their comments about the exam were generally positive. Students in Years 10 and 11 are beginning their exams on Wednesday 22nd of November. Headstart will begin on December 4th in their Year 11 and 12 courses for 2018.

COLLEGE CAPTAINS 2018The election for College Captain 2018 has been completed. Following an application process, community interview and Speech Assembly, all students and staff voted. Particular thanks to Annemarie McCabe (DSC College Council President) and Lachlan Crampton (former College Captain) who gave their time to interview the candidates on the Community Panel. All candidates presented themselves confidently and were certainly very worthy candidates. Congratulations to the elected College Captains for 2018:

• Chelsee Anderson

• Alyssa Fritzlaff

• Regan Hodge

• Josh McNally

As their first official duty the 2018 College Captains laid a wreath on behalf of the college at the Remembrance Day ceremony at Drouin Memorial Park on Saturday 11th November. Kassidy Dalziel also represented the college by singing Blackbird and the National Anthem.

PLANNING FOR 2018The Transition Team are currently working with primary schools and parents to ensure our 2018 Year 7 students have a positive experience as they prepare for next year.

The timetabling and Pathways team have been working very hard to learn the new program and ensure students get the best course possible for 2017.

Year Level Teams will communicate with our current students over the next weeks in regard to course selection in preparation for next year.

The 2018 school year will begin on Tuesday the 30th of January.

Staff professional development / student free days for 2018 are:

• Monday 29th January

• Friday 4th May

• Friday 8th June

• Friday 17th August

The end of the 2017 school year will soon be upon us. Teachers are focused on supporting all students and making sure each student finishes the year achieving the best learning growth possible. We hope parents will ensure children are attending school every day and completing homework to make the most of these last weeks.

As we look forward to the Valedictory Dinner this week it is important to acknowledge our Year 12 teachers for their work with our Year 12 students this year. The extra time given during the year and in revision sessions leading up to exams is appreciated. Also the Senior Learning Culture team for your work overseeing the learning and wellbeing of Year 12 students this year. I look forward to celebrating this partnership andourstudents’achievements.

Year 12 Celebration DayYear 12 Celebration Day lived up to its name with the class of 2017 celebrating the end of their secondary education while conducting themselves in a positive manner reflective of the school values.

The day kicked off with the customary student-staff breakfast in the Canteen which was enjoyedbyall.ThankyoutoSueDixonandher team for preparing the breakfast. This was then followed by a group photo on the oval, a little cleaning up and then the tree planting ceremony outside the Gym, everyone really dug this tradition.

A little chill-out time was a welcome respite to the full schedule, which helped return the Study Centre back into a usable space.

Morning tea was shared between staff and Year12sbeforegatheringforthe‘normallyentertaining’farewellceremony.

Mr Sharpe started the Year 12s final ever roll call in front of the school community along with manyparentseagertoshareintheirchildren’sfun. This is not the easiest of tasks due to the number of students in full costume and being difficult to recognize. Fortunately, there were only a couple of minor misinterpretations.

There were superheroes, villains, movie stars and famous Australians, with the Irwins fighting a crocodile. Shaggy and Daphne were present but no one could find Scooby-Doo so the cleaning was left up to Thing 1 and Thing 2.

Bogans made their token display of enthusiasm, yeah mate, though some tourists tried to steal the show. The Boxers held no punches becoming a little over aggressive at the Leprechauns, luckily a couple of doctors were present if it got out of hand.

Santa made an early appearance looking taller and slimmer than ever, not so for the Telly Tubbys who came up a little short in the height department. The Tea Cups were no mugs, wood-choppers no thugs and the pink ladies were smoking hot. Wonder Woman made an appearance along with Harry Potter, however this was all elementary for Sherlock and Holmes.

Congratulations all Graduates in the Class of 2017.

Year 9 First Aid TrainingYear 9 DSC students were very fortunate to be given the opportunity to learn basic First Aid Level 1withagrantthrough“BigBlokes”andCommunityColleges Gippsland. The whole year level spent the weeks prior to the practical day completing six online modules. On the Practical Day, trainers from the CCG took groups of 20 students through the various important aspects of first aid and DRSABCD. This provided a fantastic opportunity for all students to become more knowledgeable and confident in offering help if a situation arose. Well done to the Year 9 students for completing the course and being so dedicated to the learning. Thank you to “BigBlokes”forthesponsorshipandCCGfortheirorganisation.

Holocaust MuseumExcursionOn Friday November 3rd all Year 10 history students went to the Jewish Holocaust museum in Elsternwick. This was an amazing experience for both staff and students as they were fortunate enough to meet 2 Holocaust Survivors. Irma was an amazing woman who survived throughout WWII in Theresienstadt camp in Czechoslovakia and liberated at the end of the war. Andy was very fortunate to flee Poland in 1941 on a boat from Italy. He arrived safely in Australiain1941andjoinedtheAustralianwareffort in 1942. The atrocities that were committed throughout the reign of Adolf Hitler will never be forgotten and the Jewish Holocaust Museum will educate people for years to come to make sure nothing like that happens again.

Student Perceptions...Taylor AshleyWhat stuck with me was having the survivor speak to us and listening to her story first hand. When you hear the number 6 million you can become desensitised as there are no names or faces to the numbers. By having Irma share her experience it makes it feel so much more real. Being that the survivors are quite old it makes me grateful to have had the experience to listen to raw evidence as the next generation will not be able to have it.

Cody SimpsonThe most memorable moment for me was to see the mould of Oskar Schindlers ring and to hear that he started out as a Naziandyethesavedsomanylives.Ienjoyedlearningaboutanother righteous person who saved new born babies by smuggling them out of a Jewish Orphanage. It also stuck with me that if you had a Jewish grandparent that you would be persecuted regardless if you were a Jew yourself or not.

YEAR 8 FEDERATION UNIOn Tuesday 31st October the Year 8 cohort boarded the busesforatriptoFederationUniatChurchill.Uponarrivalwe were given a brief tour of the campus and a little history too. In the hall students were introduced to staff who work at the university and also a number of students who attend. They were given the opportunity to ask about uni life and how they got there.

From here students were split into 4 groups and did a series of rotations through different workshops.

These workshops included:

• A future careers and pathways exploration finding out what courses they would need to do to achieve their desired career.

• A scavenger hunt providing a more in-depth tour of the university what it offers and how it has changed over time.

• An engineering session where students built their own catapults and tested for strength, accuracy and distance.

• A nursing session where students interacted with stethoscopes, resuscitation dummies and found out if they were any good at washing their hands (lots of surprised faces in this one).

Overall it was a busy and productive day. Thanks to the wonderfulstaffandstudentsofFedUni,manystudentsgained a better insight about what university is, what it offers, how to get there and where it might lead them.

YEAR 12 VCE STUDENTS: TIPS FOR CHANGING YOUR COURSE PREFERENCES

Always list courses in order of preference!

Don't make the mistake of listing your course preferences in the order you think you will get into them. Selection authorities may make multiple offers to the same applicant, but you will only receive an offer for the highest offered course on your preferences. If you don't list courses in the order you most want to study them you may end up missing out on the course you most want to do.

Check course selection criteria carefully

Keep in mind that the closing dates may be soon or may have already passed for any additional requirements in the selection criteria for courses. Read the selection criteria carefully before adding any courses to your preference list, and contact the institution if you're not sure of the requirements.

Some courses can't be added after certain dates

Some courses do not accept new course applications after a certain date. Check the course description and selection criteria carefully before adding any courses to your preferences to make sure the closing date has not already passed.

Don't delete and re-add courses – use the re-ordering arrows

If you delete a courses with an early closing date (see above) from your preferences, you will not be able to add it back to your application. To be safe, use the up and down arrows to re-order your preferences.

Changing your preferences during the offer rounds

Once you have received an offer you cannot delete that course from your preferences, however you can move it up or down your list, change the order of your other preferences or add new courses.

Don't forget to list courses in the order you would most like to study them, with the course you most want to get into at the top.

8HOL RSPCA VisitThe boys from the Hands on Learning program visited the Burwood RSPCA last week and saw firsthand the sad truths about bad animal ownership. The Burwood RSPCA took in 8,843 dogs last financial year and 10,650 cats. Students were given a tour of the facility in the adoption centre, retail section, behind the scenes treatment area, donations storehouse and finally the hands on barn and paddocks. There was a very informative audio presentation and various RSPCA workers came through withdogsandtoldtheirrescuestories.Even“Tofu”aWest Highland Terrier, and a victim of puppy farms, was given her first experience with school students. It was very evident she was extremely nervous, but the students showed wonderful respect and understanding as she wandered around the room. Students were definitely humbled by the experience and especially the presentation on puppy farms alerted them to the responsible way to source a new companion.

Cybersafety With Susan McLeanKnowing how to navigate online spaces and remain safe is vital for our students. As a cluster Drouin Secondary connected with many of our feeder primary schools to engage the services of Cybersafety expert Susan Mclean to present to students and parents from years 5-9.

On October 17th Susan Mclean presented three sessions - Years 5 and 6, Years 7-9 and a parent session in the evening. Susan provided students with vital knowledge about how to make sure they are being proactive about their safety online and what they should do to act if they encounter inappropriate behaviour online.

Parents who attended the evening session commented that their eyes were opened to the challenges their children are facing as they engage in digital spaces.

If you missed the parent session, here is a summary of some ofSusan’stoptipsforparentsfromhersession:

1. Google your kids.

2. Get their passwords & encourage them NOT to share passwords with friends.

3. No technology in bedrooms.

4. Family online behaviour contract - set clear expectations and consequences.

5. Talk early, talk often.

6. Usefiltersonyourhomeinternetbutsupervisionisbest.

From the School Nurse...

As the weather warms up, students are encouraged to stay well hydrated. The school discourages sugary drinks and we appreciate your efforts in sending students to school with water. Hydration is important to enable students be at their best throughout the day and enable optimal learning. Here are some ideas on keeping secondary students well hydrated.

The best hydrating fluid for children is water! While the weather is warm, it is important to ensure your children are drinking enough fluids.

Children need about 1.5 Litres of water per day. (6 glasses). On warm days, or on days when kids have undertaken physical activity kids may need over 2 litres. (8 glasses)

Tips for keeping kids hydrated in the warmer months:• Packawaterbottleinyourchild’slunchboxeachday

• Freeze the drink bottle the night before and place it in the lunch box for a cool drink throughout the day

• Juice based icy poles

• Offer high water volume foods i.e apples, yoghurt, milk, celery , cucumber, watermelon etc

What is Respectful Relationships? Respectful Relationships is about tackling family violence through education.   Rosie Batty, CEO of the Luke Batty Foundation: “the school community is an essential part of social reform by modelling a culture of respect through the whole school, not just by teaching respect in the classroom”.

Just like other major social and health issues such as smoking and road toll, evidence shows that family violence can be prevented by working across the whole population (in this case, all schools) to address the attitudes, beliefs and knowledge that support violence.

The Victorian Government is investing $21.8 million to deliver Respectful Relationships and as part of this initiative Victorian schools will be supported to review their practices and policies, and model respectful relationships and gender equality across the whole school community.   A good education is about more than simply getting good marks. It is about becoming a member of society and succeeding in life – knowing how to build respectful relationships is key to achieving this. When young people build positive relationships with their teachers and peers they feel safer and happier at school, have more resilience and have positive social attitudes. Positive relationships increase a young person’s sense of social connectedness and belonging to school and family, and result in better health and academic outcomes.

Further information about Respectful Relationships is available on the Department of Education and Training website: www.education.vic.gov.au/respectfulrelationships.

The Victorian Government is investing $21.8 million to deliver Respectful Relationships and as part of this initiative Victorian schools will be supported to review their practices and policies, and model respectful relationships and gender equality across the whole school community.

A good education is about more than simply getting good marks. It is about becoming a member of society andsucceedinginlife–knowinghowtobuildrespectfulrelationships is key to achieving this. When young people build positive relationships with their teachers and peers they feel safer and happier at school, have more resilience and have positive social attitudes. Young Leader's Conference 11 students from Years 7 to 10 had an amazing opportunity to attend theHalogenFoundation’sYoungLeader’sConferenceinMelbourneonthe 13th November.

Learning how to define ourselves, to own our own strengths and imperfections, to lead ourselves and to never take someone for granted. These were the key messages we learnt.

We were privileged to get an insight from the guest speakers Nick Dal Santo (AFL Player), Gemma Triscari (Australian Cricketer), John Coutis (Motivational Speaker) and Haydon Wilson (Author) about their lives and the passionate and great leaders that they have become. These high profile and inspiring speakers spoke about what defined themselves through their own strengths and weaknesses.

Over 800 future leaders from schools all over Victoria attended the day.

Thank you to Drouin Secondary College for the wonderful opportunity that has now inspired us to create opportunities for more and improved student voice at our college.
