Let them inspire youto get out and train in beautiful places. Let themmotivate you to get the miles in on those cold, rainy mornings. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that we havethe power to endure. MEDICAL SUPPORT & TOP TIPSWe will have medics at the pit-stops, basecamp and the finish lines. There will be emergency medical support available on the route. At the half way basecamp, the medical team will also run a medical clinic.Due to COVID-19 mitigation measures, theremay be further medical checks andquestionnaires, prior to being allowed onto thestart line.

TOP TIPS FROM THE MEDICAL TEAM

HYDRATION, HYDRATION, HYDRATION!If you are thirsty then you need to drink. Don’toverdo the energy drink or gels, as they cancause nausea/diarrhoea.

ADDRESS AN ISSUE IMMEDIATELYA little niggle, ache or pain can lead tosomething more serious. Please seek medicalattention as soon as you can.

BRING YOUR OWN MEDICAL KITThe recommended items are stated in the eventpacking list. The medical team is NOT presentto hand out plasters and basic pain relief.Remember to pack plasters and painkillers inyour daypack.

A NOTE ON PAINKILLERSWhen it comes to painkillers, we recommendusing paracetamol.Ibuprofen is an alternative, whilst very useful, concerns have been raised about the use ofIbuprofen and other NSAIDs (Diclofenac,Naproxen etc.) during endurance events.

Whilst complications are rare, if used whendehydrated or with severe muscle damage thereis a potential increased risk of kidney damage.Stomach problems, particularly if the athlete isalready having GI symptoms, may also occur ifNSAIDs are used. If you have kidney disease orGI problems we would strongly advise avoidingNSAIDs. If you do choose to use them or aregiven them on route, maintain hydrated andseek help if your urine suddenly becomes verydark. If in doubt, ask one of the route medicswho will be happy to assist you.Address any possible niggles now before theybecome injuries on the event.Use your experience from training to learnwhere your weaknesses are and predict whatproblems may arise

PLEASE NOTE: Routine use of painkillers for muscle aches and pains is discouraged
