Crispen, a Pennsylvania entrepreneur, created a way toenable his ailing friend to travel from floor to floor. Crispen's idea? Design a seat thatcould climb stairs. A self-taught engineer, Crispen built the first prototype of the incliningchair. He called it the Inclin-ator. In 1929, C.C. Crispen introduced the Elevette® elevator,an alternative for homes with winding staircases. Wheelchair lifts, dumbwaiters and stairpackage lifts were added later to complete the product line.
