Now that I’m older, I’m able to appreciate Chesterton and the great community that it has become. I realize that it’s important to support local businesses in order to keep Chesterton moving forward and thriving. By shopping local, I’m able to make connections with members of the community, which also helps me promote the YMCA. I live in the heart of Chesterton now and walk around town almost every night with my pup Matilda.

These are just a few of the many ways I like to keep my money local: I’m at Strack & VanTil Food Market many nights of the week getting the necessities. I visit the European Market every Saturday. I love Ben’s Pretzels and the lemon shake-ups from the Kettlecorn Wrangler booth. I also like to get organic dog treats from the market. I have my own laser tag game, and I love to play at the gazebo in Thomas Centennial Park and in Friendship Park. (Yes, I’m a dork!)

DUNELAND TODAY WINTER 20134

“I moved to Chesterton in the 3rd grade and started school at Brummitt Elementary when Mr. Hunter was the principal. I was in Pop Warner Cheerleading and got to compete at a national level with my team in the 90’s. I was in radio and video programs throughout middle and high school, reporting Chesterton’s local news. In middle school, I would BEG my mom to drop me and a friend off in downtown Chesterton so that we could walk around and shop - especially at Ben Franklin, since we loved the penny candies! In high school, I loved to hang out at TNT and play Guitar Hero.

“Being Local, Buying Local”

I love going to Hopkin’s ACE Hardware because they are super friendly and helpful. And I usually have no idea where to find what I’m looking for, so I need their help! Also, they’re pet-friendly, so I can take Matilda in the store with me.

I often go for walks at Coffee Creek Watershed Conservancy.

I take Matilda to CoCo’s Canine Cabana, and she LOVES it! They are so great with her.

I have one of the Seven Peaks Waterpark Duneland Pass of All Passes, and I was thereoften this past summer.

I attend many as community events as possible, including Relay for Life, Bark in the Park, Bark for Life, Party in the Park, Rebuilding Together Duneland work days, National Day of Service, the Emerald 5K, and the YMCA’s Family Fall Fest.

I go to as many Chamber events as possible.

I love Peggy Sue’s Diner!

I’m the secretary of an organization in which I have a strong belief – the Duneland Exchange Club. Recently, I’ve taken on the secretary role at the district level. Being a part of this club has given me a strong sense of pride, because I’m doing something for the community that is extremely important in my eyes.

I love “poppin’ tags” at the Duneland ResaleShop!

I love buying hot dogs from the lady who sells them outside of the Chamber building in the summer [Hot Diggity Dawg].

I enjoy visiting the Indiana Dunes and collecting beach glass.

I stayed local and went to colleges like IUN, PNCand Ivy Tech.

I’ve been a Chestertonian for almost all of my life, and I take pride in our little town!

tTHuRSDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH, 1863: THE CIVIL WAR WAS RAGING, AND FOuR MONTHS EARLIER uNION ARMIES HAD DEFEATED THOSE OF THE CONFEDERACY AT THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBuRG. Numbers from the front lines were staggering and unprecedented - more than 50,000 casualties, with another 10,000 soldiers missing or captured. As the living buried their dead at the newly built Soldier’s National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the President of the United States was asked to “make a few remarks” at the gravesite’s dedication. Abraham Lincoln spoke for less than two minutes that day, yet managed to deliver one of the most profound speeches in the historyof humankind.

Eleven days after the Gettysburg Address, 1st Source Bank opened its first branch in South Bend, Indiana. At that time, the bank was called the First National Bank of South Bend, but while the moniker has evolved, the organization’s mission has been firmly in place since that initial grand opening 150 years ago. From the beginning, 1st Source’s leadership changed the way its customers thought about banking – and their expectations for how a bank

should partner with, strengthen and protect its clients’ communities. To call the bank “transparent, philanthropic and financially solid” would be like labeling Lincoln’s paradigm-shifting oratory “a few remarks.”

FOR THE PAST 150 YEARS, 1ST SOuRCE HAS BENEFITTED FROM ExTRAORDINARY LEADERSHIP THAT HAS SET THE STANDARD FOR ALIGNING MISSION WITH OPERATIONAL REALITIES. Judge Thomas S. Stanfield, the bank’s first President, was respected as one of the most broad-minded and farseeing men in early South Bend. As a Circuit Court Judge, Indiana State Representative and a close advisor to Governor Morton during the Civil War, Stanfield was a sterling example of his organization’s commitment to community development. He was a pivotal force in bringing the railroad to South Bend in 1851, took leadership positions in the city’s educational arena, and was a founding member of the local Historical Society. This dedication to the intellectual and economic health of the community has remained prominent in the bank’s operations, to the extent that in 2012, 1st Source Bank employees volunteered more than 25,000 hours to more than350 community organizations.

In addition to its philanthropic efforts, 1st Source Bank has consistently raised the bar for customer service and satisfaction. In 1928, the bank was the first in South Bend and the fifteenth in the nation to replace teller cages in favor of a friendlier counter system, which allowed bankers to more easily assist clients and provide personal service. In 1935, the bank opened its first branch - the first branch to be opened by any banking institution in northern Indiana. This second location provided clients greater conveniencein taking care of their banking needs.

In 1940, after moving to the iconic Farmers’ Trust Building, the bank offered South Bend’s first drive-in window and night depository. It also initiated a telephone service to give area residents the opportunity to call in and receive the time of day. Later, the bank offered 24-hour self-service depositories and the mailing of bank statements and cancelled checks to clients. In the following

years, the bank continued to roll out new products and services, including the “Bank by Mail” program, which let customers transact business any hour of the day or night free of charge by use of a special mail-in envelope. In 1977, the bank introduced First Card, an early ATM card, to give clients greater convenience in accessing their money. In the following decades, 1st Source Bank consistently led its peers in the adoption of new technologies. Today, the bank offers a full suite of convenience services, from comprehensive onlinebanking to a mobile app.

While much could be written about the intricacies of the mergers, acquisitions and astute planning that led 1st Source Bank to its current presence in Michigan and Northwest Indiana, the more meaningful story is how the bank has remained true to its mission of providing straight talk and sound financial advice while always keeping clients’ best interests in mind. Such stalwart dedication to the principles upon which it was founded has positioned 1st Source Bank as one of the Forbes “100 Most Trustworthy Companies” (2009: Forbes and Audit Integrity). Further accolades include 1st Source being named

“Top Indiana SBA Lender” in 2012 – an honor which is given to the Indiana bank which closes the most Small Business Loans in one year. Northwest Indiana Business Quarterly Magazine recognized 1st Source as the “Best Bank for Business, Attaining a Business Loan, and Customer Service” in the Michiana area, while Bank Director Magazine included 1st Source in the “Nifty 50” – a list of best users of capital based on profitability and capital strength. BauerFinancial gave 1st Source a 5 Star “Superior” Rating (the highest possible rating), and Forbes included 1st Source in its list of “America’s Best Banks” in 2013 (an award based on analysis of asset quality, capital adequacy and profitability). 1st Source was the smallest bank in the country to make the list.

With 25 years of consecutive dividend growth, 1,200% growth in assets since 1977, more awards than can be recited from memory, and a Chairman and CEO who has been leading with phenomenal success for more than 40 years, 1st Source could easily rest on its laurels. However, that wouldn’t be in character for an institution founded on the same principal of thoughtful transformation thatLincoln extolled 150 years ago.

“With most transactions now occurring electronically, there are three reasons most people are coming into a bank,” explains Robert Ax, Regional President and Senior Vice President. “The first is to open an account, the second is to apply for credit, and the third is to address a concern. 1st Source has adjusted to this more nuanced set of customer needs by hiring more consultative, articulate staff members who are problem solvers, not product pushers. We ask questions to discover our clients’ needs and craft holistic, comprehensive solutions. To better facilitate this comparatively organic process, 1st Source has introduced a new side-by-side banking model. In the past, there were high counters, signs, and ropes – items more indicative of a herding process. 1st Source interviewed many customers from across our service areas, and discovered they wanted something more participative and relaxed. The side-by-side banking model is the product of those interviews.

We listened to our clients, and the response has been phenomenal. Our Portage branch has integrated this new system, and we plan to incorporate the model into all of our locations inthe future –including those in the Duneland area.”

Students of design – and particularly of how space is used to communicate organizational beliefs – could find no better case study than the 1st Source Bank branch in Portage, Indiana. An open-concept design, customer resource lounge, coffee bar and brightly appointed children’s play area signal the bank’s departure from the business-as-usual floor plan. The keystones of the new model, however, are the side-by-side banking pods located in the middle of the lobby. Here, customers are encouraged to walk behind the desk to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the bank teller – subtly removing the historic division between information-seeker and information-keeper. This level of transparency is not only new to the industry, it’s transformative to the banking process itself. Now, clients and tellers can work together to review, problem-solve and develop solutions - and 1st Source Bank can further solidify its position as the bank that values long-term relationships over short-term product sales. With the added value of this new collaboration between its bankers and its clients, 1st Source Bank’s next 150 years promise to be as distinguishedas its last.

In 2008, Judy and Larry aLders partIcIpated In sharefest, a one-day work event put on by churches wIthIn porter county. Prior to the event, Judy had assumed the task of discovering projects in Chesterton that would benefit from the volunteers’ help. After hearing how deeply the work day resonated with the Alders’ passion to help the less fortunate, their Pastor directed them towards NeighborLink -- a new non-profit, faith-based organization in Fort Wayne, Indiana. What followed was an intensification of the couple’s life work, and the beginning of newhope for those who need it most in Porter County.

NeighborLink Porter County (NLPC) is a 501 c3 whose mission is to operationalize “practical, neighbor-to-neighbor expressions of God’s love.” The organization’s website (www.NeighborLinkPC.org) serves as the primary mechanism through which NLPC invites Porter County residents and partner organizations to seek free assistance from their neighbors, and/or join volunteer project teams to provide help. The website has three primary functions: project posting, project selection, and volunteer sign-up. The Project Posting Site is where visitors can post a project with which they or someone they know needs help. Once a project has

been posted to the site, the NeighborLink coaches evaluate, construct (e.g., how many volunteers, what tools and materials are needed, etc.) and select projects. Once a project is selected, coaches post the project to the NeighborLink Porter County web page. Visitors accessing the site can review the posted projects and volunteer by signing up for a specific project or by donating tools or materials to the effort. Recently, Duneland TODAY Magazine talked with Judy Alders, who co-founded NeighborLink Porter County with her husband Larry in 2008.

Duneland TODAY Magazine: Please talk about how you developed the Porter County affiliate of NeighborLink. Are there folks you’d especially like to thank for their help through the development phase?

NeighborLink Porter County is an affiliate of the Fort Wayne organization, and we belong to the NeighborLink Network. However, we did have to incorporate the organization and apply for our own non-profit status. Several people were and are an integral part of that process, including Darlene Kittredge from Kittredge and Zehner, P.C., the Valparaiso Law Clinic, and Attorney Clark

Holsinger. We are grateful for their help. The response to our mission was wonderful. That first year our volunteers completed 86 projects. DT: Is there a specific project that stands out in your memory since beginning your workwith NeighborLink?

One Monday night at about 8 p.m., I received a call from one of our partnering agencies. They told me that they had been working with a single mom with four kids, and that she had done

everything they had asked of her, including getting a job at a fast food restaurant in order to help support her family in these difficult financial times. However, on Monday night her car’s transmission went out, and they had to tow the car to a safer location. They wanted to know if there was anything NLPC could do. I immediately posted somethingon our NeighborLink Facebook page.

The next morning, I went to a Duneland Chamber of Commerce meeting [the Dawn of Duneland morning networking event at Third Coast Spice Cafe], and spoke about this woman and her children. I was directed to go across the street to Tire Experts and ask them if they would be willing to look at the car and tell us what was wrong with it. They were happy to help out, and were so friendly and accommodating! The car was in Valparaiso, so I needed to get it up here to Chesterton somehow. I drove straight to Joe’s Towing, Inc. and they volunteered with cheerful hearts to go and bring the car to Chesterton. Things were coming together nicely. I was praying throughout

the day that the problem would be an easy fix. But I soon received a call, and the news was not good. The car needed a new transmission and it was going to cost $1,150 – and that was with a discount from our friends over at Tire Experts. I’d been keeping everyone on our Facebook page up-to-date on the situation. Our website had been down because of technical issues related to launching a new website. I had requested that if anyone could contribute anything to this project,to please contact me.

NeighborLink Porter County Building Tangible Expressions of God’s Love

To my surprise, a very generous person soon contacted me to let me know that she had a vehicle that she would be willing to donate to this single mom! I couldn’t believe what I was reading, and the tears began to flow. I have to tell you that this isn’t the type of project that we normally do. However, the call came in and I felt led to help. And I am finding that there is a new normal with NeighborLink because of all of the hurting peoplein Porter County.

DT: What are your greatest challenges? One of our biggest obstacles is getting projects completed from the website that require some type of skill such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, or other technical projects. We have several volunteers that can rake leaves or shovel snow, but we need more skilled labor volunteers. DT: What are you still surprised by in the sorts of projects that are submitted? What has ceased to surprise you?

We are surprised by the number of needs to replace roofs. We were surprised by the number of people who are on disability for various reasons– such as

sickness or injury – and make about $700/month and are expected to live on that. We want to fill that need where we can. We have ceased to be surprised at how deep the needs are even here in Porter County. Recipients are so grateful for those who step in to help them when they have nowhere else to turn.

DT: Are you able to respond to and help everyone who submits a project?

Because we are a volunteer organization, we cannot guarantee that projects will get completed. Projects stay on the website for about 75 days, and then they fall off. But they can be reposted anytime. Since we started in the fall of 2008, our volunteers have completed over 350 projects. Projects can be completed any time that it fits into the volunteers’ schedules. DT: Where do you draw your strength to stay optimistic and productive in the face of such hardship as is demonstrated by those who submit projects? Honestly, my strength comes from the Lord. I know it isn’t possible to help everyone, and there will

always be people in need, but the Bible instructs us in Mark 12:31, “to love your Neighbor as yourself” and though we are far from perfect, we try to live that out. It is so rewarding to be able to help someone else, to be the hands and feet of Jesus. We want to model service to our children and teach them the importance of giving back. DT: What is your greatest wish regarding the future of your organization, and the future of Porter County as a whole? Our vision is that churches all over Porter County would be out serving their neighbors every weekend of the month. Imagine the impact we could have if that were to happen. Our wish is that people would really begin to utilize the website to its full potential by selecting projects that fit their skill levels and expertise. Our dream is to make life a little easier for marginalized citizens in Porter County.
