diamonds and coloured sTones

Prospective  buyers  are  advised  that

coloured gemstones  and diamonds may be

enhanced by a variety of means to improve

their  clarity  or  colour.  certain  treatments

are  common  practices  within  the  jewellery

industry.  for  example,  heating  of  coloured

gemstones  is  an  accepted  method  of

famous  for  the  creation  of  fine  jewellery  and

the  use  of  exceptional  gems,  aletto  brothers

can  trace  their  roots  back  to  the  turn  of  the

19th  century,  when  current  director,  alfredo

aletto’s great grandfather was commissioned to

create  a  special  jewel  to  commemorate  the

opening of  the eiffel Tower. a  family business,

multiple generations embrace the opportunities

that a smaller world offers, internationally seek-

ing interesting and exceptional gems to incorpo-

rate into beautifully crafted jewels.

BIRks

canada's premier  jewellery retailer was  found-

ed in 1879, in Montreal, canada, by Henry birks.

birks quickly became the prime destination  for

discerning  jewellery  connoisseurs.  The  20th

century  saw prominent  jewellers  ellis  brothers

and Ryrie incorporated with the birks name.  by

the  late twentieth century, canadian diamonds

had become a central part of the birks engage-

ment  ring  business.  birks  continues  to  be  a

leader  in  the  canadian  jewellery  industry,  and

the name Maison birks was unveiled in 2013.

bReITLInG

established  in  1884,  breitling  swiftly  became

associated with sports. The accurate timing pro-

vided by breitling,  and  the  innovative  separate

buttons  for  timer  start  and  reset  made  these

timepieces a premier choice in the sports world.

With  the  advent  of  aviation,  breitling  naturally

became the wristwatch of choice for pilots. The

brand remains a top choice among adventurers

looking for reliability in a watch.

BUCCeLLATI

Started in Milan in 1919, by Mario buccellati, the

house  is  known  for  intricate detail  and unique

textures and finishes in their jewels. The House

of buccellati has long been recognized as having

an important place in the pantheon of jewellers.

buccellati  has  produced  jewels  for many  royal

houses and film stars. as the house expanded,

shops  were  opened  in  Rome,  florence  and

new  York.  after  Mario  died  in  1965,  sons

Gianmaria & Luca set out to expand the house

on  an  international  scale,  with  shops  in  Hong

kong,  Japan,  Monte  carlo,  Paris,  Sardinia,

venice, capri, elba and beverly Hills, providing

closer access to devoted clients.

buccellati continues today to produce their jew-

els  in  small  workshops  with  artisans  of  many

generations association with the House.

BUCHeReR

In  1888,  carl-friedrich  bucherer  and  his  wife

Luise  opened  Lucerne's  first  watch  and  jew-

ellery store. Their sons, ernst and carl eduard,

joined the family-owned company in the 1920s.

In 1924, ernst bucherer decided to include the

then  little-known  watch  brand  “Rolex”  in  its

range.  Today,  Rolex  remains  the  House  of

bucherer's most important partner.

In  2013,  bucherer  celebrated  its  125th  jubilee

and opened the world's largest watch and jew-

ellery store in Paris. bucherer is represented in

many  important markets,  and while  continuing

with a focus on watches, has an important jew-

ellery design component in its business model.

BULgARI

Descending from an ancient family of Greek sil-

versmiths, Sotirio bulgari founded the company

in  1881, manufacturing  precious  silver  objects.

During the late 19th century, Sotirio moved to

Italy and in 1884 opened his first shop in Rome.

In  1905, with  the  help  of  his  sons costantino

and  Giorgio,  he  inaugurated  the  shop  in  via

condotti, which remains bulgari’s flagship store.

In  the  early  20th  century  the  two  brothers

developed a deep interest and expertise in pre-

cious  stones,  jewels  and  watches.  The  period

immediately  after  the  Second  World  War

marked an important turning point in the histo-

ry of bulgari. Giorgio and costantino decided to

create a unique style inspired by Greco-Roman

classicism, the Italian Renaissance, and the 19th

century Roman school. by  the 1950’s-60’s,  the

bold and  innovative style of bulgari had gained

success within the jet set and movie world, and

they focused on jewels with precious gems.

In 1977 bulgari launched the bvLGaRI watch, a

worldwide  success  story.  The  watch  compo-

nent  of  bulgari  has  become  a  very  important

part of the business since then.

CARReRA Y CARReRA

established in 1885, this Spanish house has kept

its style current through innovation, introduction

of  new  ideas,  designs,  and  designers,  and  by

embracing changing markets around the world.

figurative  work,  and  naturalistic  flowing  forms

are  central  elements  of  carrera  y  carrera

designs,  which  are  represented  in  the  great

houses of europe.

CARTIeR

Louis-françois cartier founded cartier, in Paris,

in 1847. He had three grandsons, Louis, Pierre

and  Jacques,  who were  responsible  for  estab-

lishing the famous world-wide empire. The next

fifty years saw many milestones: Royal clientele

from  england,  Siam  (now  Thailand),  Spain,

Portugal, Greece,  Italy, and Monaco. cartier,  in

1906, first introduced jewellery in the geometric

style  that  was  later  to  become  known  as  art

Deco. among the exceptional jewels and gems

sold by cartier was  the  famous blue diamond

“The Hope”,  now  in  the permanent  collection

of  the  Smithsonian,  in  Washington.  cartier

moved  to  their  current  location  at  653  fifth

avenue,  new  York  in  1917.  The  Morton  f.

Plant mansion was exchanged for a two strand

natural  oriental  pearl  necklace  for  Mrs.  Plant,

and $100 for Mr. Plant. The name cartier con-

tinues  to  evoke  the  image  of  luxury  like  no

other.

CAveLTI

The youngest son of a Swiss family, Toni cavelti

served a long apprenticeship in the goldsmith's

trade,  developing  a  magical  skill  in  jewellery

design. at the age of 23, equipped with only $8,

the tools of his  trade and a romantic vision of

the  canadian West,  he  arrived  in  vancouver.

There he made his fortune by creating fine jew-

ellery for “society” women, including the Queen.

In 1971 he was commissioned to make a neck-

lace of b.c. gold and local jade to mark a royal

visit.

The modernist artistic movement under way in

the  vancouver  of  the  '50s  and  '60s  brought

cavelti’s work to its full flowering, and helped to

establish  his  national  and  international  reputa-

tion.

CHAneL

In 1910, Gabrielle chanel opened her first shop

in  Paris,  under  the  name  "chanel  Modes."

chanel’s  elegant  simplicity  was  an  immediate

success,  and  inspired  the  fashion  industry

around the world

In 1932, Gabrielle chanel hosted an exhibition

of  fine  jewellery  “bijoux  de  Diamants”  in  her

residence,  establishing  her  affinity  for  the  dia-

mond.

The  first  chanel  watches  were  launched  in

1987, with the creation of the Première watch,

designed  by  Jacques  Helleu,  the  dial  of  the

watch  being  reminiscent  of  the  shape  of  the

Place vendôme  and  the  stopper of  the  iconic

The  J12,  chanel’s  ceramic  sport  watch  was

introduced in 2000, and immediately became a

standard.  The  ceramic,  in women’s  and men’s

styles, provides a lightness of look, but solidity of

materials.

cHaRLeS kRYPeLL

charles  krypell  is  a  native  new  Yorker.  He

trained as a  sculptor, and brought his  focus  to

the small sculptural forms of jewellery, introduc-

ing his first collection in 1976.  krypell produces

jewels  that  are  intended  to  be  viewed  and

appreciated from all directions, just like any fine

sculpture. He uses classic combinations of pre-

cious metals,  diamonds  and  coloured  gems  to

produce a very modern and enduring look.

CHOpARd

In 1860,  in the Swiss village of Sonvilier, Louis-

ulysse chopard, a talented timepiece craftsman,

established  his  workshop.  His  watches  were

quickly  recognized  for  their  quality,  and  were

quickly in demand throughout europe.

chopard has developed into a brand known for

both  its  fine  timepieces,  and  its  joyful  jewels,

with  styles  such  as  Happy  Diamonds,  and

watches that are as reliable as they are a pleas-

ure to wear.

concord  was  founded  in  biel,  Switzerland  in

1908.    It  is  a prestige  timepiece company  that

remains anchored in a tradition of reliable time-

keeping together with a strong sense of design

directly  connecting  to  the  21st  century  urban

landscape.

dAvId WeBB

Originally  from  north  carolina,  David  Webb

moved to new York, and  in 1948, he  formed

David  Webb  Inc.,  located  on  57th  Street.

Within a  few years, he had established himself

as  one  of  the  most  fashionable  jewellers  in

Manhattan, and at the height of production his

two  full-time  workshops  employed  200  jew-

ellers and 37 setters.

The new  York  social  register  flocked  to  him.

They warmed to his personal charm and appre-

ciated his brilliance as a designer.

David Webb’s  designs  of  the  1950s  and  early

1960s showcased endless variations on flowers

and  organic  forms.  His  love  of  nature  took

shape in jewels of all sizes and varieties. almost

all of his  iconic animal  jewelry was designed  in

the  1960s.  The  times  were  changing  and  he

embraced  them:  the  rich  vocabulary  of  ham-

mered gold, enamel, pearls, colors, textures and

shapes were synthesized  into a new geometry

that reflected the spirit of the 1970s.

ed a jewellery company, produces small, wear-

able sculptural works, and has created an endur-

ing collection  sought after  the world over. His

combinations of metals and gems create echoes

of antiquity in very modern sculptural jewels.

with it a rich history, and a tradition of quality in

work and materials. The modern company was

started in Germany the 1990’s, and has had ties

with  descendants  of  the  fabergé  family  who

produced such important jewels as the Imperial

easter eggs in Russia.

fRanck MuLLeR

In the late 1980’s, two men, franck Muller, and

vartan Sirmakes, made the bold move to estab-

lish  a  company  with  a  focus  on  exceptional

timepieces.  The  slogan  of  franck  Muller  is

“Master  of  complications”,  and  this  label  is

earned through the continued experimentation

and  exploration  into  the  complexity  of  the

modern timepiece. franck Muller timepieces are

not  only  exceptional  in  their  technical  accom-

plishment, but also in their elegance of design.

FRed

fred  Samuel,  at  the  age  of  28,  established  his

first  jewellery store  in Paris at 6 rue Royale,  in

1936, The son of a jeweller, he was an inventive

promoter, and through his charm and connec-

tions, was always able to remain in the spotlight

in Paris society. With a strong international rep-

utation,  and  with  charm  and  simplicity,  fred

designs continue  to captivate  the sophisticated

jewellery buyer. His guiding principles: “boldness

and discipline”.

gARRARd

This famous company dates back to its founder

George Wickes who  first  entered  his mark  at

Goldsmiths' Hall  in  1722,  and went  into  busi-

ness  on  his  own  in  1735.  Soon  after,  he  was

appointed as goldsmith to the Prince of Wales

Since 1843, when Queen victoria bestowed the

honour  of  crown  Jeweller  on  the  company,

Garrard  has  served  six  successive  monarchs.

One  of  the  most  enduring  images  of  Queen

victoria  is  of  her  wearing  a  small  diamond

crown made by Garrard in 1870.

In  1911  two  important  commissions  were

undertaken:  the  making  of  Queen  Mary's

crown  for  the  coronation;  and,  the  Imperial

crown  of  India worn  by  king George  v  later

that year. In 1937 the crown set with the koh-

i-noor diamond was made for the late Queen

elizabeth,  The  Queen  Mother.  The  Imperial

State  crown  was  remounted  by  Garrard  in

1937,  and  then  further  adjusted  for H.M.  The

Queen for the coronation in 1953.

ceremony and pageantry has always been a key

element  in  the  company's  heritage  Robert

Garrard's hallmark of 1848 is found on the well-

known america's cup. for modern day sports

enthusiasts other presentation  trophies  include

the Dubai World cup, the cricket World cup,

and the Premier League Trophy.

geORg Jensen

Georg Jensen set out, in 1904 to create designs

that  possessed  both  functionality  and  beauty,

the essence of the arts and crafts movement.

Georg  Jensen’s  style  embraced  the  art

nouveau with a modern sensibility and a Danish

flair.  nature,  tamed  into  flowing  forms  and

embellished with geometry, is a constant theme

in Jensen designs. Jensen has featured collabora-

tions with some of the most important names in

design,  and  these  designers  each  bring  their

presence to the essence of Jensen.

GeORGeS L’enfanT

Georges L’enfant was a goldsmith and jeweller,

based in Paris, france, and is particularly known

for jewels produced through the 1950’s to the

1970’s.  L'enfant was  a  jeweller  for cartier  for

some  time,  and  through  his  own  independent

workshop he worked for other important hous-

es including van cleef & arpels, and produced

some of the finest work of the time.

gUCCI

In  florence,  1921,  Guccio  Gucci  opened  a

leather  goods  and  luggage  store.  He  was

inspired  by  the  leather  goods  he  saw  while

working  at  the  Savoy  Hotel  in  London.  The

english  “horse  set” was quite  likely  the  inspira-

tion  for  the  horse-bit  shapes  that  would

become  representative of Gucci,  and continue

as  iconic  symbols  of  the  brand  today.  Many

Gucci jewels feature equestrian themes.

GuMP’S

Gump’s,  a  foundation  stone of  San  francisco’s

decoration  and  design  world,  was  founded  in

1861  as  a  mirror  and  frame  shop.  The  San

francisco earthquake of 1906 caused the com-

pany  to  re-examine  the offerings  and  focus of

the  store.  The  company  from  that  time,

onwards, concentrated on offering unique items

of decorative beauty. This  included  jewels, and

brought  about  a  specialty  line  that  makes  a

statement and represents the elements of beau-

ty that surround us.  Gump’s continues to offer

the finest elements of the designer’s craft.

H. STeRn

Hans Stern, was creating a name for himself  in

the 1950’s as a jeweller who had a strong focus

on coloured gemstones, based in brazil, one of

the world’s most important sources of coloured

gemstones.  The  company  maintains  a  strong

connection  to  its  roots,  and  brings  important

and fine gemstones to the world through a net-

work of stores in the major style centres around

the world.

ILIAs LALAOUnIs

Ilias  Lalaounis  comes  from  a  family  of

Goldsmiths  and  watchmakers,  he  joined  the

family  business,  Zolotas,  in  1940,  but  by  the

1960’s  Ilias  was  most  interested  in  exploring

themes  inspired  by  ancient  Greek  civilization,

and  by  1969,  had  established  an  independent

company to focus on his interests. He had great

success  with  themes  from  antiquity,  and  this

inspired  others  to  explore  ancient  culture

through jewellery design.

Ilias Lalaounis’ four daughters, katerini, Demetra,

Maria  and  Ioanna  direct  jewellery  production

and  international  sales.  They  also  operate  a

Lalaounis museum.

InTeRnATIOnAL WATCH CO ( IWC)

International Watch company was  established

in  Schaffhausen  in  1868  by  an  american,

florentine aristo Jones, who aimed to produce

high quality watches for the u.S. market, using a

highly  skilled, but modestly priced Swiss work-

force.

The company was involved in the early produc-

tion  of  wristwatches,  early  quartz  watches,

important developments in diver’s watches, the

first  wristwatch  with  a  built  in  compass,  and

complicated movements.

Some  of  the  notable  models  are  Ingenieur,

aérospatiale,  The  GST  Deep  One,  Spitfire,

aquatimer, Portuguese, and Da vinci.

JAegeR-LeCOULTRe

In  1847,  antoine  Lecoultre  created  a  revolu-

tionary system that did away with the need for

keys to rewind and set watches. Since that time,

the company has produced many innovations to

make  timekeeping  simpler,  more  convenient,

more accurate, or to accommodate the specific

requirements of clients.

Producing complicated watches, and even more

sophisticated  chiming  repeater  watches,  the

brand  is  known  for ultra  thin movements,  and

accurate  measurement.  One  of  the  most

famous watches is the unusual Reverso, original-

ly designed for english Polo players who wanted

to easily  reverse  the watch  to protect  the dial

from damage. While it’s an attractive and highly

desired model, this  is a minor innovation com-

pared to some of the sophistication that Jaeger-

lecoultre produces.

JuDITH LeIbeR

Judith  Leiber  is  known  as  a  powerful  creative

source, and has a focus on decorative items that

are carried or worn by the most stylish in soci-

ety.  Handbags  are  strongly  identified  with  the

Judith  Leiber  name,  and  jewels  are  naturally

associated  with  decorative  and  ornamental

items that are carried.  Leiber’s designs are iden-

tifiably  fun and striking,  colourful,  and  flamboy-

ant.

LOUIs vUITTOn

at the age of sixteen, Louis vuitton decided to

become a trunk maker.  Luggage remains a main-

stay of the company since its inception in 1859.

no longer focused on hard sided luggage, travel

is different, and Louis vuitton has kept up with

fashion, producing items that are the essence of

luxury, beautifully made, and of the finest mate-

rials.

Jewels bearing the vuitton logo or name go back

to the origins of the brand, with the iconic logo,

or the form of small cases in precious metal and

gems, as in the bag charms featured in this sale.

LUCAs

Gabriel  Lucas moved  from Paris  to canada  in

1929,  and  opened  a  jewellery  studio  in

Montreal.  by 1940,  he had established  a  store

that attracted Montreal society  for the  innova-

tive and beautifully made jewellery.  Lucas’ work

continues  to  be  sought  after  for  its  originality

and quality.

kReMenTZ

established  in  1866,  the  newark,  new  Jersey

based krementz was among  the  largest of  the

many  new  Jersey  jewellers  who  made  gold

items for the world. One of the staples of the

company was a wide array of gold and gold plat-

ed shirt and collar  studs, a necessity  for nearly

every man, and a mainstay of the company for

decades.  The  company  followed  style  and

design  trends  around  the world,  and with  the

development  of  button  collars,  and  the  influ-

ence of art nouveau and art Deco, other gold

items  and  more  traditional  jewels  became

important parts of the company’s catalogue.

mARInA B.

Marina  b.  established  her  first  showroom  in

1978. expanding from her Geneva location, her

brand  has  expanded  to  London,  new  York,

Milan  and  Tokyo.   With  the  combinations  of

bright colours, mixed metals, and freeform and

geometric  shapes,  Marina  b  brings  a  woman’s

perspective  to  jewels  that  have  an  enduring

appeal to women. Often featured in the fashion

press, Marina b’s  jewels have adorned  interna-

tional  stars  from  elizabeth  Taylor  to  Julia

Roberts.

Movado is a name derived from the internation-

al  esperanto  language,  meaning  “always  in

motion”, and was given to this watch company

in  1905.  known  for  innovation  in  design,

Movado’s most  famous watch,  now  known  as

the “Movado Museum watch”,  featuring a sim-

ple dial with a gold dot at 12:00, was introduced

in 1947. This classic design is timeless and is as

current  today  as  it was  in  the  first  half  of  the

20th century.

OmegA

Louis  brandt  started  his  business  in  1848,  the

genesis of what would become OMeGa as we

now know  it.  Some models have been  to  the

famous for the six lunar landings, the first diver’s

watch  and  the  world’s  only  certified  marine

chronometer  wristwatch,  the  company  holds

many  records  for accuracy. OMeGa has been

on the wrist of James bond (007) in every film

in  the  franchise  since  1995.  In  the  upcoming

winter  Games  OMeGa  will  serve  as  Official

Timekeeper of the Olympic Games for the 26th

time.

pATek pHILIppe

On May  1st,  1839  businessman  antoni  Patek

and watchmaker françois czapek joined forces

to found "Patek, czapek & cie" in Geneva.   In

1844, Patek met the french watchmaker, Jean-

adrien  Philippe  in  Paris  where  the  latter  pre-

sented his pioneering stem winding and setting

system by the crown. When czapek decided to

leave, the company name changed to "Patek &

cie". Later,  in 1851 when adrien Philippe offi-

cially  became  associated with  the  company,  it

was  renamed  "Patek  Philippe  &  cie",  before

changing  once  more  in  1901  to  "ancienne

Manufacture d’Horlogerie Patek Philippe & cie,

S.a.".   In 1932, the company was purchased by

two brothers, charles and Jean Stern, owners of

a fine dial factory in Geneva. Since then, "Patek

Philippe S.a." remains a family owned firm.

Patek Philippe is one of the most highly respect-

ed names in timepieces, and continues to pro-

duce  extraordinary  and  complicated  watches,

desired by collectors around the world.

In 1874, in La côte-aux-fées, a small Swiss vil-

lage  Georges  Édouard  Piaget  started  his  first

workshop on the family farm and devoted him-

self  to  making  high-precision  movements  that

he soon began supplying to the most prestigious

brands.

In  1943,  the  company  made  a  decision  that

from  then on,  the movement  factory  from La

côte-aux-fées produced watches signed by and

sold under its own name.

In  1957,  Piaget  began  to  design  and  build  the

ultra-thin  movements,  and  by  1960,  Piaget

launched  the  world’s  thinnest  self-winding

movement. It measured just 2.3 mm thick.

In 1979,  they  launched  the Piaget Polo watch.

avant-garde, yet classic enough never to go out

of  style,  it  quickly  became  an  icon  that  was

adopted by the international jet set.

Piaget  fuses  technique  and  design  now  more

than ever in jewellery and watchmaking.

ROLex

In 1905, at the age of 24, Hans Wilsdorf found-

ed a company in London specializing in the dis-

tribution of timepieces. Wristwatches were not

very  precise  at  the  time,  but  Hans  Wilsdorf

foresaw  that  they  could become not only  ele-

gant, but also reliable.

To  convince  the  public  of  the  reliability  of  his

timepieces, he equipped each watch with small,

very  precise  movements  manufactured  by  a

Swiss watchmaking company in bienne.

Rolex  first  concentrated  on  the  quality  of  the

movements.  The  relentless  quest  for  chrono-

metric precision rapidly led to success. In 1910,

a  Rolex watch was  the  first wristwatch  in  the

world  to  receive  the  Swiss  certificate  of

chronometric Precision, granted by the Official

Watch Rating centre in bienne.

four  years  later,  in  1914, kew Observatory  in

Great  britain  awarded  a  Rolex  wristwatch  a

class  “a” precision certificate, a distinction  that

until that point in time had been reserved exclu-

sively for marine chronometers. from that date

forward, the Rolex wristwatch was synonymous

with precision.

Rolex moved to Geneva, a city renowned inter-

nationally for watchmaking. Montres Rolex S.a.

was  registered  in  Geneva  in  1920.  Since  that

time, Rolex has become one of the most wide-

ly recognized watches in the world.

ScHLueP

Walter  Schluep  was  born  in  Spain,  and  was

trained  in  Switzerland,  before  finally  settling  in

Montreal. Schluep’s work came to prominence

in  the  1960’s,  where  his  inventive  naturalistic

designs  played with  form,  colour,  and  texture.

His work has gone into public and private col-

lections,  including  a  piece  presented  to  Mme

charles DeGaulle at canada’s expo ’67, and in

the collections of the Quebec Museum of art,

and the Montreal Museum of fine art.

sTeRLe

Pierre Sterlé  founded his  company  in 1934,  in

Paris.  from  1934  to  1939  Sterlé  created  and

made  jewellery  for houses such as boucheron,

chaumet, kirby, Ostertag and Puiforcat.  at this

time,  many  fashionable  Parisians  started  to

know the way to his atelier. Sterlé was adamant

that he wasn’t going to exhibit his work in any

shop  window.  The  renowned  french  writer

colette  mentioned  Sterlé’s  jewels  in  some  of

her books. Through the 1950’s Sterlé was invit-

ed to egypt by king farouk and to brazil where

he was welcomed by President vargas. The wife

of the Maharaja of baroda ordered some jewels

and  an  exiled  egyptian  queen  asked  Sterlé  to

remodel  her  crown  jewels.  Sterlé  received,  in

1953,  ‘54,  and  ‘55,  the  prestigious  ‘Diamond

award’ from De beers. being an avid reader, in

1960, Sterlé collaborated with Salvador Dali for

a book cover. He made  it  in bronze and cov-

ered it with gold, gemstones and pearls.  It was

called the ‘Livre de L’apocalypse’. It was unique

and  illustrated  by  all  of  the  contemporary

painters of the time. In 1961, Sterlé started sell-

ing  most  of  his  creations  to  the  ‘Maison

chaumet’. an artist with exceptional creativity,

and modest business skills, by 1976 Sterlé was

forced  to  declare  bankruptcy  and  liquidate  his

stock. chaumet purchased most of his creations

and signed anything that Sterlé forgot to mark,

including jewels dating back to the early 1960’s.

Sterlé  remained  employed  at  chaumet  as  a

‘Technical consultant', until his death in 1978.

TIFFAnY & CO

founded in new York in 1837 Tiffany remains

an  icon  to  jewellery  consumers  around  the

world.  known  for  innovation  and  high  stan-

dards, Tiffany had adopted the silver standard of

“925”, and 95% standard for platinum, both later

adopted  as  uSa  standards.    In  1886  Tiffany

introduced  its  iconic Tiffany setting providing a

light and open setting to best display a diamond.

constantly working to bring the latest in design

innovations  to  its  offerings,  Tiffany  regularly

brings  designers  to  its  clients;  in  1956,  Jean

Schlumberger  joined and  in  the  famous annual

“blue book” of 1974-75, elsa Peretti was intro-

duced. Paloma Picasso was first featured in 1980

and  architect  frank Gehry  has  designed many

current offerings.

Drawing on the natural world, the company was

early on recognized as a master of art nouveau

and  the  arts  and  crafts  movement.  Through

the decades it has remained at the forefront of

design, noted for the use of exceptional materi-

als and unwavering standards.

TUdOR

The  Tudor  watch  brand,  founded  by  Hans

Wilsdorf, was  announced March  6,  1946.  The

introduction of Tudor was  the  realization of  a

plan  to produce watches  that would have  the

standards of Rolex behind  them, but could be

offered at a modest price. The brand has been

a  success  since  the  beginning,  and  remains  a

highly regarded Swiss timepiece to this day.

ulysee  nardin  founded  his  eponymous  time-

piece  company  in  1846.  from  the outset,  and

through  their  history,  these  exceptional  time-

pieces have won awards for accuracy. The pre-

cision of ulysee nardin watches brought them

to  the  attention  of  astronomers,  sportspeople

and  navigators.  The  company’s  symbol  of  an

anchor  makes  reference  to  the  high  regard

sailors have for the accuracy of these precision

devices.    Ongoing  research  and  development

has  continued  to  keep  ulysee  nardin  at  the

RObeRTO cOIn

based in vicenza, Italy’s most famous gold jew-

ellery  city,  the Roberto coin brand was  intro-

duced in 1996, after 19 years of manufacturing

under  house  names  for  other  important  jew-

ellery brands. usually containing a secret signa-

ture  ruby,  Roberto  coin  jewels  are  regularly

sought  by  consumers  at  prestige  jewellers

around the world.

RObeRTO DeMeGLIO

Roberto Demeglio traces his jewellery roots to

1922, when  his  grandfather  established  a  jew-

ellery store in Turin, Italy. In 1984, after attend-

ing art School and apprenticing with numerous

important  jewellers,  Roberto  opened  his  own

jewellery workshop. With a focus on advanced

technology  and  techniques,  the  workshop  has

gained  recognition  for  a  focus  on  innovative

uses of materials,  and has earned  international

recognition and many design awards.

vAn CLeeF & ARpeLs

van cleef & arpels has always been inspired by

the  unique  creative  energy  of  love,  for  it  was

love which brought the Maison into being.

Towards the end of the 19th century, a young

girl  named  estelle  arpels  –  the  daughter  of  a

dealer  in precio  us  stones – met  a boy named

alfred van cleef, the son of a stone-cutter.

This  led  them  to  founding  the Maison  of  van

cleef & arpels.  In 1906, alfred set up  in busi-

ness  with  estelle’s  brother  charles,  a  talented

salesman who managed  their new boutique  in

Paris’ Place vendôme. Two years later, estelle’s

brother  Julien  joined  the  firm;a  third  brother,

Louis, joined them in 1912.

Over  the  years  that  followed,  the  name  van

cleef  &  arpels  became  synonymous  with  the

most exquisite jewellery in the world. With that

achievement,  the  love,  which  first  brought

estelle and alfred together, lives on to this day

through the many enchanting love stories of the

Maison.

van cleef  & arpels  remains  one  of  the most

desired  names  in  jewellery,  noted  for  many

innovations  in  design,  manufacturing  and  gem

setting techniques which changed the jewellery

landscape and the way we think of jewellery.

ready  to  wear  collection.    from  the  start,

versace always had a strong focus on theatrical

elements, and these were often combined with

creative uses of geometry in space.  Often faces

and mask  forms  are  found  in  versace  designs

and jewels, and these bring a mystic presence to

the jewels to this day.

ZOLOTaS

In  1895,  in  athens,  Greece,  efthimios  Zolotas

established his first store, and in the ensuing 120

years, Zolotas has remained at the forefront of

important european jewellery design. The com-

pany,  originally  influenced  by  the  most  noted

design  houses  in  france,  quickly  established  a

unique  style.  frequently  influenced  by  classical

and  ancient  designs,  many  of  Zolotas’  jewels

incorporate  elements  from  jewels  of  the  past

millennium,  but  firmly  embrace  thoroughly

modern  style.  Paloma  Picasso  designed  for

Zolotas in the 1970’s, and the company contin-

ues to draw influence from the ancient in com-

bination with the modern.
