    Elastomeric joint sealant SABS 110:1973

    DESCRIPTION

durakol G LM is a gun grade two-component manganese cured mediummodulus polysulphide sealantcomplying to SABS 110:1973.

    USES

durakol G HM is a sealant used forsealing expansion joints, stress relief

joints and movement joints in buildingand other civil engineering structures,These include superstructures, reservoirs and potable water retainingstructures, floors, basements andsubways.NOTE:

For sewerage treatment and wastewater structures use flexothane G.

    FEATURES & BENEFITS

The product is suitable for use inpotable water.

    Forms a tough, elastic, rubber-likeseal.

Accommodates continuous andpronounced cyclic movement in allplanes.

Excellent adhesion to most commonconstruction materials.

High resistance to ageing and goodresistance to extreme climaticchanges.

Specific primers for porous and non-porous surfaces ensure excellentadhesion.

    APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONSJOINT PREPARATION

Thorough preparation of joints isessential if a satisfactory seal is to beobtained. For concrete, stone ormasonry substrates, all traces of dust, laitance, mould oil, any previoussealant and all other foreign materialmust be removed by mechanicalgrinding, followed by blowing out withdry oil-free compressed air. Allsubstrates must be completely dry.

Suitable back-up material, such asduracordor durasheetmust be usedto adjust sealant depth in the joint tocomply with correct joint geometry.

duracord is a self releasing material, but if soft-board is used as the jointfiller, a plastic strip bondbreaker mustbe placed on the filler surface beforesealant is applied. The use of bondbreaking tape is not required inexpansion joints where duracord ordurasheet, cellular polyethylene fillersare used except where a tear off stripis employed on the durasheet. In thisinstance, it is recommended that atape be placed over the cut edge ofthe durasheet to prevent amechanical bond occuring.

Where the sealant is subject to ahydrostatic head then a 100-200kg/mdensity durasheetmust be used.

Any expansion joint filler must bechecked to ensure it is tightly packedand no gaps or voids exist at the baseof the sealing slot before positioning abond breaker.

    PRIMING OF JOINTS

Porous surfaces must be fully primed

the sides of the joint face, allowing thesolvent to evaporate. The surfaceshould be touch dry between 30minutes and 2 hours dependant ontemperature and humidity.

the joint during this time windowotherwise another coat of primer mustbe applied.

Note:The use of a bond breaker is not

required in expansion joints containingduracord or durasheet cellularpolyethylene expansion joint fillers. Forconstruction or contraction joints abond breaker tape or duracordshouldbe used. Where hydrostatic pressureexists, only bond breaking tapes mustbe used, not foamed back-up strips.

primer) for brush application toconcrete, stone, brickwork, timber andunglazed edges of ceramic tiles. Brushwell into the faces of the joint, toensure complete coverage. Avoid

over-priming resulting in an excess ofprimer in the base of the joint orapplication beyond faces. The primerfilm should be allowed to lose itssolvent (approximately 30 minutesdrying) before sealant is applied.Primer open time is 4 hours. If however, the primer is allowed to drylonger than 6 hours, then the surfacemust be re-ground and re-primed.Non-porous surfaces must be primedwith epidermix 391.For use on glass and ceramics whichare to be permanently immersed inwater. It is a one part chemicallyactive, clear liquid for brush or pad

application. One thin coat should beapplied and allowed to dry for 30 to 60minutes prior to sealant application.Iron and steel must be protected withan anti-corrosion primer prior tosealing. For estimating purposes allowapproximately 250 ml primer per 6 litresealant.

    PROTECTION OF ADJACENTSURFACES

Masking tape applied to areasadjacent to joint will protect them fromsmearing and enable the joints to be

finished to a neat line. The tape shouldbe applied after the joint has beenprepared, prior to any priming orsealing operation and removed after allfinishing and tooling operations havebeen completed, but before thesealant has cured.

    MIXING

durakol G HM is supplied in a singlecontainer. A cellophane sheet coversthe polysulphide (base). On top of thecellophane is the plastic container ofactivator paste. To prepare the material for use,

remove the activator and cellophanesheet. Remove any base adhering tothe cellophane and replace the base inthe container.Remove the entire activator paste fromits container and add to the base.Mix the material thoroughly, preferablywith a slow speed drill (not in excess of250 r/min) fitted with a suitable paddle, until an even colour, free from streaks,is obtained.

Periodically scrape the sides and baseof the container with a spatula or smalltrowel to ensure complete blending ofcomponents. To obtain a complete mixwill take FIVE TO TEN MINUTES of

mechanical mixing. If hand mixing is to be carried out, aminimum period of 15 minutes ofvigorous mixing is required.Caution: If material is not mixedthoroughly, its performances will beimpaired.

    JOINT GEOMETRY

durakol G HMmay be applied to jointsbetween 6 and 50 mm wide. The widthof the joint should be four times that ofthe calculated joint movement. Jointsthat are expected to experiencenormal cyclic movements should be

designed to an optimum width to depthratio of 2:1, subject to the overridingrecommended minimum sealant depthof:

    6 mm for metals, glass and othernon-porous surfaces;

    10 mm for all porous surfaces;

20 mm for trafficable joints andthose subject to hydrostaticpressures.

Joints expected to with standhydrostatic or shear forces must havea width to depth ratio of 1:1.

    APPLICATION

Application to primed surfaces can beby hand or pressure-operated gun orby trowel or by pouring, according tothe cross-section of the joint to befilled. It is essential to ensure completecontact between the sealant and the

joint surfaces.Tooling of sealant is necessary forcomplete air-free filling of voids and toassist in making contact by wetting thesurfaces to which the sealant isapplied. The surfaces of the joint should besmoothed with a clean knife or spatula.

A minimum of surface lubricant suchas dilute detergent solution may be

used to assist the process. Anymasking tape should be removedimmediately after tooling.

    CLEANING

All equipment should be cleanedimmediately after use, and before thematerial has set, with abe superbrush cleaner followed by washingwith soap and water.

    PROTECTION ON COMPLETION

The finished sealant should beprotected from traffic until the sealanthas fully cured. Over-painting of

sealant is not recommended becauseof the inability of paint films to acceptmovement. However, if definitelyrequired, trials should be carried out todetermine compatibility.

    LIMITATIONS

durakol G HM should not be used indirect contact with materials containingpitch or bitumen.

    MODEL SPECIFICATION

The sealant shall be durakol G HM, a

two component, high moduluspolysulphide sealant applied inaccordance with the manufacturersrecommendations, abe ConstructionChemicals including the use ofepidermix 391 and epidermix 326primers where required. The sealantshall comply with the requirements ofSABS 110, 1973.
