    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Durant Series 47000 Ratemeter is a four digit, all solid state eventper unit of time meter. The displays are .43 LEDs. Provision is made tolight a decimal point between the units and tens displays. It operatesfrom 120/240 VAC (420/421), 50/60 Hz power and is capable ofworking with a broad range of AC and DC input signals (.018-141V). Itcan operate directly from most magnetic pickups or from 5 VDC signals(TTL) and from 15 VDC signals (CMOS). The input signals can bedoubled (x2) at the users discretion. It supplies 15 VDC power formany solid state transducers.

The input signals (counts) are accumulated for a selected unit of time, then the accumulated count is displayed while a new sample is beingaccumulated. The sample time is user selectable from .001-4.095seconds in .001 second increments. The basic time is generated by acrystal controller oscillator.

All connections are made to seven rear panel screw terminals and alluser options or selections are made via slide switches on the rearpanel. Panel mounting is accomplished by inserting the unit through apanel cutout.

    SIGNAL INPUTIN 1: 0-10,000 Hz

The count is entered (counted) when the voltage drops below thelower switch point of 1.9 .5 volts. The voltage must rise to morethan .05 volts above the lower switch point between counts.25,000 ohms input impedance100 VAC/DC max. continuous voltage

UNIT OF TIMEThe Sample Time is adjustable .001-4.095 seconds in .001 secondsteps. Practical limit: .5-4.095 seconds, .02% or 1 count,

    whichever is greater accuracy.DECIMAL POINT

A decimal point can be lighted between the units and tens displayby turning on dip switch #1, 3 switch group.

DOUBLINGThe count is entered on the negative signal transition or on thenegative and on positive signal transitions as chosen by theposition of switch #2. This provides two counts for each input cyclewhen switch #2 is ON.

    WIRING

    1. Disconnect all power before making any wiring connections orchanges.

    2. Keep all signal wires as short as possible and away from otherwires.

    3. Connect any shields on signal wires to LOGIC COM.

    4. Connect power to AC INPUTS.

    47000-420: 120 VAC, 50/60 Hz

    47000-421: 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz

    5. Connect signal input:

    A. AC signal .018-141 V from magnetic pickup or other ACgenerator.

    LOGIC COM. Shield Shield

With this connection the IN 1, and IN 2 leads can beinterchanged. The AC signal must not be referenced orconnected to the shield.

    B. Low level AC/DC signal:

Connect the + signal to IN 1

Connect the - signal to LOGIC COM

This signal must provide a voltage greater than 2.4 V whhigh and less than 1.4 V when low across a 25,000 ohm loaThis type signal is typically provided by a TTL device. Thvoltage may be 100 VAC or DC maximum.

    C. Switch or current sinking signal:

IN 3: Either lead from a switch or the signal lead from current sinking device. This will be a + voltage point.

LOGIC COM: The other switch lead or the common lead froa current sinking device.

A switch or transistor provides a good input at this terminThe open circuit voltage is 15 VDC and the current intoresistor load is 17 ma decaying to 2 ma steady state. Tvoltage drop across the switch or transistor should be lethan 1.0 V. Never apply over 15 V to this terminal.

    6. Set Unit of Time

    A. Select the required Sample Time to provide the requirdisplay. It must be remembered that the Sample Time is athe Display Tim, and, therefore, has a practical minimuvalue of about 0.5 seconds. In this unit the maximum SamTime is 4.095 seconds so the Sample Time should between 0.5 and 4.095 seconds. The Sample Time selected so that the proper number will be counted adisplayed for the speed being measured. The adjustabSample Time makes it possible to adjust the display fvarious ratios and different units of measurement.

    SAMPLE TIME = REQUIRED COUNT

    COUNT RATE

    Example 1:

A 30-tooth steel gear and a magnetic pickup are being used indicate the speed of the gear shaft on the Ratemeter. It is knowthat the gear shaft speed is about 43 RPM. Choose a numberor near the shaft speed and determine the pulse rate in seconds

At 40 RPM (Required Count) the pickup will generate 40 x (1200) pulses per minute or 1200/60 (20) pulses per second.

    Sample Time = 40/20 = 2.0 Seconds

If the Doubler (Switch 2 is ON) is used, the count rate will be 2 x 20or 40 counts per second.

    Sample Time = 40/40 = 1 Second

Example 2:A proximity pickup and a stud on the motor shaft will be used toprovide signals for a display of conveyor speed. The 1750 RPMmotor drives a six tooth chain sprocket through a 27:1 gear train. The chain has a pitch of 1.8".

If the motor runs 1800 RPM the sprocket will turn 1800/27 (66.7)RPM.

The chain will advance 66.7 x 6 (400) links per minute or 400 x 1.8(720) inches per minute or 720/12 (60) FPM. Sixty (60) is therequired count.

At 1800 RPM the motor shaft with one stud will generate 1800/60(30) counts per second.

    Sample Time = 60/30 = 2 Seconds

If the Doubler (Switch 2 is ON) is used, the count rate will be 60 persecond, and the Sample Time is one second with one stud on themotor shaft.

    Example 3:

A flowmeter is to be used which produces 1000 pulses per secondat full flow of 78.3 GPM. The Sample Time is 783/1000 (.783)seconds. With the decimal point the indication will be 78.3.

    B. Setting the Unit of Time:To set a desired Sample Time you must turn ON switches so thatthe sum of the ON values equals the Sample Time. The switches(12 switch group) have the following values:

    1 = .001 seconds 7 = .064 seconds2 = .002 seconds 8 = .128 seconds3 = .004 seconds 9 = .256 seconds4 = .008 seconds 10 = .512 seconds

    5 = .016 seconds 11 = 1.024 seconds6 = .032 seconds 12 = 2.048 seconds

Example: To set a Sample Time of 2.500 seconds:2.500

    #12 -2.048 (largest value less than 2.500).452

    # 9 - .256 (largest value less then .452).196

    # 8 - .128.068

    # 7 - .064.004

    # 3 - .0040

When switches 3, 7, 8, 9 and 12 are ON the Sample Time 2.500 seconds.

    TROUBLESHOOTING

    1. No DisplayIf the display does not light and show 0000 when the AC powerapplied, check the wiring to the AC INPUT terminals and cheto insure that the correct power is getting to the unit.

    2. No Count from IN 1 and IN 2Disconnect all power to the unit and remove all connections to 1, IN 2, and IN 3. Place all the rear panel switches in the O

position. Jumper IN 1 and IN 2 to the two AC INPUT terminaReapply AC power and within eight seconds the display shoushow 49.1/49.2 if on 60 Hz power or 40.9/41.0 if on 50 Hz powIf this is satisfactory, check your signal for IN 1 IN 2.

    3. No Count from IN 1Disconnect all power to the unit and remove all connections to 1, IN 2 and IN 3. Place all rear panel switches in the ON positioRe-apply AC power and with a short piece of wire mamomentary connections from IN 1 to LOGIC + 15 VDC. Tdisplay should show 00.2 for each make and break of tconnections in a 4.095 second Sample Time. If this satisfactory, check your signal for IN 1.
