PRE-CONGRESS PROGRAMME WEDNESDAY, 7 JUNE 2017

8:00 ONWARDS: REGISTRATION AND INFORMATION DESK OPEN

9:00 WOMEN IN NEWS SUMMIT: “BREAKING THROUGH” + LUNCHThe WIN Summit profiles and celebrates stories from women media and business leaders who are breaking through glass ceilings, challenging traditional business models or innovating in news. Take part in a morning of keynotes and interactive panel discussions for inspiration, mentoring and networking. Join Summit speakers for lunch and continue discussion in a more personal setting.

More than 200 women from all spectrums of the media industry will take part, including senior female editors and journalists who are part of the regional and global Women in News community. This morning event and luncheon will equip and inspire.

13:00 GAMI ROUNDTABLE: MEDIA, INNOVATION AND SPORTS: A MAJOR SHIFT IN SIGHTorganised by the Global Alliance for Media Innovation (GAMI)

Sports news is a major driver for media innovation, both in content and contribution and provides a solid platform for exploring new digital media and opportunities in immersive digital storytelling. The competitiveness attracts major spon-sors and advertising and reaches large audience creating a need to open new channels. The major sports federations are seeking new alliances in order to find new business models, win negotiations of rights and access information. The panel will discuss the new framework and value chain facing the rules imposed by the digital platforms relating this to the Sports news initiative.

Nicolas Henchoz, Director, EPFL+ECAL Lab, Switzerland

Andrew Perkis, Professor, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway

13:00 SMALL AND MIDSIZED BUSINESS: A PRAGMATIC APPROACH TO DATAThe basic idea behind the words “Big Data” is that everything we do is increasingly leaving a digital trace, which we can track, use and analyse. “We have access to a vast variety of Data but what really matters is our ability to make use of it,” says Ben Shaw, who also highlights that it’s not only about business intelligence but also “finding questions you did not know you could ask.” So, what resources should a media com-pany invest in a data strategy? Where do you start and how do you measure return on investment? The annual Small and Midsized Business meeting will address these issues.

Brought to you by WAN-IFRA Media Management Accelerator

Moderator: Peter Lamb, President, Lamb Consulting, USA

Speakers include: Ben Shaw, Director, Global Advisory, WAN-IFRA, Germany and more tbc.

14:00 PRESS FREEDOM ROUNDTABLE10 Years on from the Declaration of Table Mountain – The State of Media Freedom in Africa

At its 2007 Congress in Cape Town, WAN-IFRA launched the Declaration of Table Mountain, a continent-wide campaign for governments to repeal criminal defamation and ‘insult’ laws. In the 10 years since the Declaration was issued, we use the opportunity of returning to South Africa to assess how the freedom of expression landscape has changed. The driving principle in 2007 was the conviction that Africa urgently need-ed a strong, free and independent press to act as a watchdog over public institutions. The annual press freedom roundtable invites media from across the continent to determine wheth-er we are any closer to achieving this goal, and if not, what needs to be done to get us there.

OPENING CEREMONY & GOLDEN PEN AWARDJoin us as we welcome participants to Durban and celebrate the award of the Golden Pen of Freedom, WAN-IFRA’s annual recognition of an outstanding action, in writing or deed, of an individual, a group or an institution to the cause of press freedom. Behind the names of the laureates lie stories of extraordinary personal courage and self-sacrifice, stories of jail, beatings, bombings, censorship, exile and murder. This is a moment for the world’s media to come together in solidarity and offer support to our laureate, and to insist that more be done to protect the essential freedoms that lie at the very core of our profession.

OFFICIAL WELCOMEThe President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, and Michael Golden, the incoming President of WAN-IFRA, will welcome participants and open the 69th World News Media Congress and 24th World Editors Forum.

18:00

WELCOME RECEPTION DURBAN CITY HALL

You are invited to celebrate with us after the Opening Ceremony! The mayor of Durban will welcome you at the historic Durban City Hall where we will enjoy drinks and appetisers. Don´t miss this opportunity to network with your peers.

The Durban City Hall, also known as the eThekwini City Hall, was built in the early 1900s in classic neo-Baroque-style. It has an impressive central dome, rising to 48m, surrounded by four smaller domes – each with a statue, representing art, literature, music and commerce. This landmark building also houses Durban’s Natural Science Museum, a public library, auditorium, and the Durban Art Gallery.
