AN INTRODUCTION TO DURESTA

Thank you for considering Duresta Hand Made Upholstery.

Duresta has been making high quality upholstery for 70 years. Our factory is in Long Eaton, aNottinghamshire town renowned for the skill of its people in all aspects of furniture making, fromthe traditional joinery of frame makers through to all kinds of fabric cutting and sewing expertiseand, of course, an unrivalled understanding of upholstery. You will find that our furniture makingcombines these skills with the best materials available to produce long lasting sumptuouslycomfortable upholstery. Frames are made from selected hardwoods, each dowelled, glued andscrewed for trouble free long life. The standard specification, as can be seen opposite, includes coilsprung seating for durability and comfort.

We always bear in mind that sofas and chairs are not merely functional objects for seating. They alsoplay an important part in establishing the character of the room they are set in. Although our designsnaturally respond to changing tastes, at the heart of each lies Classic English Style, which throughoutthe world is generally considered to have a flavour of understatement, subtlety and fine proportion.

We offer a very large range of fabrics which we source internationally to ensure the widest choiceof styles and colours. These are individually hand cut and expertly sewn with separate valancesapplied by hand slipstitching. All undergo rigorous quality testing to reduce the incidence ofpremature wear and tear and to guide you as to suitability.

For many years Duresta has held a unique licence which enables us to study closely the myriaddesign details and original pieces of furniture found in the collections of The National Trust.Where you find its symbol as you leaf through this catalogue it indicates that a design has beenbased on such studies. In addition, we have recently introduced a small collection of fabrics, thistime inspired by the beautiful parks and woodlands in the care of The National Trust.

We hope that you find something which suits your taste from our ranges.

A TYPICAL CONSTRUCTION - THE BLANCHARD ROYALE SOFA

1 Please refer to the specifications at the back of thiscatalogue for details of cushion fillings for each model.

2 Sinuous tension springs are used for back support.

3 Layers of webbing, hessian, upholstery felts, high density foam, and fibres are used to make up the arms.

4 All fabrics are individually hand cut and patternmatched, all cushions are reversible.

5 High density edge profile is combined with foams, felts and fibres to form a durable but flexible seat base.

6 Coil sprung seat base construction.

7 Frames are made from selected solid hardwoods, glued,screwed and triple or double dowelled as appropriate.

LEATHER FURNITUREThere is much to consider when choosing leather furniture as it is available in a great variety of qualities and finishes. At Duresta we seek tomanufacture upholstery to the highest standards and always endeavour to retain the natural beauty and integrity of good quality materials.Only 5% of hides produced are selected for aniline dyeing and subsequent use by Duresta. The leather is soaked in transparent dye whichallows natural marks to remain visible. Every hide is unique and will exhibit colour fluctuations due to the tendency of leather to acceptdyes differently in specific areas. Natural markings such as neck and belly wrinkles, healed scars, scratches and insect bites are normal. It isthese, combined with the varied and interesting textures and colour effects, which our expert craftsmen carefully exploit during tailoring tobest reveal the full character and beauty of the material. It is important to appreciate that these characteristics will be present, they are anatural hallmark and distinguish top grain aniline leather from the lesser grades used by the vast majority of manufacturers. Top quality aniline hides, such as those used by Duresta, will gain in character over the years. Most scuffs and scratches will appear and fadeduring use, and given the care due to any of your favourite possessions, your Duresta leather upholstery will endure for a very long time.
