The word Lent comes from an Old English word for spring (“lengten,” the time of the year

when the days grow longer). For the last 1700 years, the Church has set aside the 40 days

between Ash Wednesday and Easter as a time of special preparation. It is a time of

repentance and renewal.

During Lent, our rejoicing is muted as we remember our Lord’s suffering and death. But it

is with a purpose: we know that the Lord who died took up his life again on Easter Sunday

morning. So our 40 days of Lent are ones lived in the certain hope of the resurrection.

The color of the season is purple. Purple is the ancient color of royalty. We have this kind

of king: he wore a crown of thorns, and carried a cross for us. Thanks be to God!

For the precise counters in the congregation, the Church speaks of 40 days of Lent because

they did not count the Sundays, which retained their significance as “little Easters.”

INVOCATION

L(eader): The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship

of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C(ongregation): And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS

L: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as

his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and

punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I

have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in

Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love.

Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

L: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent

death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own

dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

THE CHILDREN’S SERMON

THE FIRST LESSON: JEREMIAH 26:8-15 8 But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the LORD had

commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said,

"You must die! 9 Why do you prophesy in the LORD's name that this house will be like Shiloh

and this city will be desolate and deserted?" And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in

the house of the LORD.

10 When the officials of Judah heard about these things, they went up from the royal

palace to the house of the LORD and took their places at the entrance of the New Gate of

the LORD's house. 11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and all the

people, "This man should be sentenced to death because he has prophesied against this

city. You have heard it with your own ears!"

12 Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people: "The LORD sent me to

prophesy against this house and this city all the things you have heard. 13 Now reform your

ways and your actions and obey the LORD your God. Then the LORD will relent and not bring

the disaster he has pronounced against you. 14 As for me, I am in your hands; do with me

whatever you think is good and right. 15 Be assured, however, that if you put me to death,

you will bring the guilt of innocent blood on yourselves and on this city and on those who

live in it, for in truth the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing."

THE PSALM OF THE DAY: PSALM 42-43

Read responsively with the leader

L: As the deer pants for streams of water

C: so my souls pants for you, O God.

L: My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

C: Where can I go and meet with God?

L: Why are you so downcast, O my soul?

C: Why so disturbed within me?

L: Put your hope in God,

C: for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

L: Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me;

C: let them bring me to the place where you dwell.

L: Then I will go to the altar of God, my joy and my delight.

C: I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God.

THE SECOND LESSON: PHILIPPIANS 3:17—4:1 17Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live

according to the pattern we gave you. 18For, as I have often told you before and now say

again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19Their destiny is

destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on

earthly things. 20But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there,

the Lord Jesus Christ, 21who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his

control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

1Therefore, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how

you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!

THE VERSE OF THE DAY

Choir: Refrain

All: Refrain

Cantor: Lord, you are truly the Savior of the world; give me living water, that I may never

thirst again.

THE GOSPEL LESSON: LUKE 13:31-35 31At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, "Leave this place

and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you."

32He replied, "Go tell that fox, 'I will drive out demons and heal people today

and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.' 33In any case, I must keep

going today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside

Jerusalem!

34"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to

you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her

chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 35Look, your house is left to you

desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes

in the name of the Lord.'"

THE HYMN OF THE DAY: #120, What Wondrous Love is This

THE SERMON:

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was

buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended

into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will

come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the

forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THANKSGIVING

THE OFFERING: The members of Faith Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord's work in

this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this

offering which supports our ministry.

THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH:

THE LORD’S PRAYER: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those

who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

We’ll be feeding the choir dinner before their concert, and we still need still some donations of

desserts, salads, and bread. Please check the sign-up sheets in the gathering space. Thanks.

Sermon Video Tapers: We’ll be having a brief meeting immediately after church (11.35am) in

Room 4. We’ll be discussing our best practices for sermon videotaping, and also some issues

we’ve been having with our Vimeo account and the website.

Our Sermon VideoTapers are a group of men and women who serve our church by taping our

sermons and uploading them on our website. We find many people, in searching for a church,

enjoy watching one of our sermons before attending. This is a great outreach opportunity that

requires some computer knowledge, but more importantly, a willing heart. Our VideoTapers

usually serve one Sunday every two months. If this is something that might interest you, please

come to our meeting or speak with Vicar Schleis.
