During the 13th conference of the International Association of Ports andHarbors (IAPH), Toru Akiyama was honored for more than 28 years of ser-vice. Akiyama served as secretary general of the association from 1967 to1973 and was appointed secretary-general emeritus in 1973. In 1967,Akiyama served as chairman of the organizing committee for the associa-tion’s fifth conference in Tokyo. This is one of three pieces of oil field supply equipment that were liftedaboard the M/V CIUDAD CUCUTA recently. The total weight of the lift was138 tons, with one 65-foot long piece weighing 34 tons, an 85-foot pieceweighing 70 tons and a 31-foot piece weighing 34 tons that was stowedbelow deck. Engelman General, Inc., of Wichita Falls, Texas, built the

equipment for Texaco. J.J. Flanagan Stevedores did the stevedoring. Theship is part of the Flota Mercante Grancolombiana line. E.S. Binnings,Inc., was the agent and H.L Ziegler, Inc., was the freight forwarder. Theequipment was shipped to Barranquilla, Colombia.

The People’s Republic of China’s China Ocean Shipping Company hadanother of its new container ships, the M/V LUO HE, make its maldenvoyage to the Port of Houston recently, docking at Barbours Cut Terminal.After a delicious lunch of Chinese food, the traditional malden voyage pla-que was presented to the captain. Shown during the ceremony are, fromleft, Chen Zhaolin, owner’s representative; Patrick Cooper, marketing andsales manager of the Gulf region for Norton, Lilly & Co., Inc., which pro-vides support services for COSCO; Jim Stratton, Barbours Cut assistant

manager; John Horan, manager of Barbours Cut; Captain Xu Hang Zhang,master of the vessel; Tom Kiger, Norton, Lilly general manager of the WestGulf, and Edward Klauke, operations manager of the Gulf region for Nor-ton, Lilly. The LUO HE is 558 feet long and 93 feet wide with a d.w.t, ratingof 25,615. The vessel has a container capacity of 1,234 TEU. The ship wasbuilt in Bremerhaven, West Germany, and delivered during the firstquarter of this year.

The M/T JO OAK made its maiden voyage to the Port of Houston recent-ly. The JO OAK is the sister ship of the JO BIRK, which first called onHouston in October 1982. The JO OAK is a state-of-the-art chemical tankeroperated by JO Tankers, USA, Inc. With 28 stainless steel tanks and 10coated wing tanks, the 571-foot, 38,600 d.w.t, ship is equipped to carryvirtually any liquid cargo. Draft is 35 feet and beam is 104 feet.
