When Jim Culbert, the district’s executive director of information technology, first considered

Google Apps for Education several years ago, he was told that compliance with the Children’s

Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was the responsibility of the district or its schools. “A lot of the

burden was placed on teachers,” he said. “This isn’t a reality for many school districts, since a lot

of the questionable content or possible student situations come through after the teacher leaves

for the day or on weekends.”

Integrating Google with Gaggle provided Duval County a complete hands-off solution. Gaggle

provisioned more than 135,000 student and staff accounts, allowing the district to leverage its

existing school and class structure when integrating Drive. Gaggle receives updates to student

data every night to keep everything in sync with the district’s student information system.

“As long as there is good communication with teachers from the beginning, assuring that they’re

not logged-in to Google with their personal accounts, it’s pretty easy to see the benefits of

integrating the two products,” added Holly Lanham, Instructional Technologist at Duval County.
