Dear Students, Faculty and Families,

As we begin Teacher Appreciation Week, I wanted to take a moment to recognize the outstanding Teachers, Guidance Counselors, School Nurse, and Instructional As-sistants that make up our teaching and learning staff at DHS. I believe that our staff at DHS is a wonderful group of committed educators who work very hard to create dynamic classroom, co-curricular and athletic experiences for all students. I am very proud of our teaching and learning staff and the work they do here every day at DHS.

After discussion and debate about the pros and cons of issuing students work over the summer, last Wednesday evening at School Committee an important announce-ment was made that DHS students will no longer be required to complete the “Math Packet” over the upcoming summer break. The expectation of reading a book for both Social Studies and English classes before students return to school remains. The list of suggested titles will be published in early June. The Math Department will provide supplemental resources that students and families will be able to use over the summer as desired.

This change does not apply to AP courses which will continue to have required work to be completed over the summer. The main reason that our AP courses have summer work is our school calendar. AP exams are administered nationally in early May each year. Our DHS students are often two to three weeks behind other AP students na-tionally because we do not return to school until late August or early September. The summer work for AP classes is intended to address this gap.

I want to share some concerns with parents which I raised with our student body last week about the care of the student laptops. Increasingly students are bringing laptops to the Tech office because their devices are not functioning correctly. Many times these repairs are covered by the laptop insurance program, however, we are experiencing a significant increase in damages that are caused by misuse or abuse of the device. This type of damage is not covered under the insurance policy and the cost of the repair is being assessed directly to the student. I encourage all students to make sure there is a case on their computer (if lost, new ones can be purchased in the Tech office) at all times. Many of the most common types of catastrophic damage could have been pre-vented if there was a case on the device. Please feel free to call the Tech. Department with any questions.

The DSU in collaboration with the Duxbury Business Association (DBA) will be host-ing an internship and summer job fair at the Duxbury Student Union on Thursday, May 16, at 5:30 PM at the DSU. Students will also be able to get advice from DBA members on preparing a resume for future interviews. Please see the additional infor-mation later in the newsletter.

FROM THE PTO:Please join us TONIGHT for the May PTO meeting in Room B103 from 7-8PM as we discuss all of the activities coming up in the next month: the Prom reception, Teacher Appreciation Week, NHS inductions and graduation. Come find out what the DHS PTO is all about! All are welcome. Questions? [email protected]

The DHS School Council will meet this coming Wednesday evening at 5:00 PM in the school library to de-velop our School Improvement Plan for next year. As always, any DHS community member is welcomed to attend.

The Duxbury Interfaith Council (DIF) is looking forward to hosting their annual Baccalaureate ceremony on Thursday, May 30, 2018, for members of the senior class. I have been fortunate enough to attend Bac-calaureate a number of times and it is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to share/perform a poem, a piece of music or reading with their class. Any senior who wishes to participate is encouraged to reach out directly to the DIF to sign up. Please see the additional information later in the newsletter.

This past week the beautiful spring days finally arrived. With this weather each year comes the annual reminder about what is “appropriate dress” for school. Our student handbook addresses the topic in this way: “Students are expected to dress as appropriate to a school setting. Students who meet this expec-tation not only assist in creating an environment that is conducive to learning, but also demonstrate and develop appropriate judgments that will assist them in moving from school to a variety of work envi-ronments. Essentially, students should consider school their place of employment and dress accordingly. (Page 41.)” “Appropriate Dress” can at times be a subjective standard where the are often very differing opinions. I encourage all students, with the support of their families, to be thoughtful in making these decisions so that there are no disruptions to their own classroom experience.

And finally, this Saturday is our Junior Prom. Over six hundred twenty-five students and guests will be traveling to the New England Aquarium after walking the Red Carpet Saturday, May 12, 2018. We ask that students begin lining up for the parade at 4:45 PM in front of the Alden School, and all students need to be in DHS no later than 5:45 PM. At that time, we will begin our boarding process and hope to leave for the venue as close to 6:00 PM as possible in order to arrive on time.

The Red Carpet will be located along the sidewalk in front of the high school entrance. Over the last few years we have had larger and larger crowds to watch the Red Carpet and I encourage families and friends to get here early. Parents and families are encouraged to park in the student lot on the Steele campus and behind the Student Union Building. Volunteers will be parking cars in the staff lots in front of and to the side of the high school. Any student who does not wish to enter the prom via the Red Carpet should reach out to Ms. McGuire and Mr. Scozzaro to make an alternate arrangement.

We are very much in need of some parent volunteers willing to park cars as students arrive. If you are interested, please contact me directly at [email protected].

Have a great week,Jim Donovan

From the DHS Health Office: Prom season and the warm weather have finally arrived! Please take note of some of the following facts:-UV radiation-emitting tanning devices (beds and lamps) were recently added to the most dangerous forms of cancer causing radiation by the IARC (Internal Agency for Research on Cancer). -Tanning booths and lamps have been put in the same category as tobacco for cancer causing agents.-Those who use tanning beds before the age of 30 increase lifetime risk of melanoma by 75%.-Tanning can also cause premature skin aging (wrinkles and age spots), and increase the risk of eye con-cerns like cataracts.-Please note tanning booths are not safer than tanning in the sun, although tanning booths have a timer on them they are often designed to expose the tanner to higher UV rays in a shorter period of time.-Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer.-If you prefer to tan outdoors use a sunblock that is effective against both UVA and UBA rays. Apply gener-ously and reapply often.Take note that certain medications can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.-Pay attention to your surroundings. High altitude, wind and sun reflection off water, sand and gravel add to your UV exposure.-Wear sunglasses with UV protection. After a long winter we all like to look our best with a little color or tan. Just use moderation and common sense!

NETWORK HOW, NETWORK NOW

The Duxbury Business Association, a business membership organization comprised of over 120 Duxbury business professionals, partners with the Duxbury Student Union to provide NETWORK HOW, NETWORK NOW, an evening of networking, interview skills, summer employment and internship opportunities, to high school teens and young adults on Wednesday, May 16th at 5:30pm at the Duxbury Student Union.

The workplace is changing and young people are looking for different experiences. Maybe it is mentoring or career guidance, perhaps job shadowing, internships, short term projects or full time employment. At Network How, Network Now, teens and young adults will learn the art of net-working, fine tune interview tips and then meet business owners in mock and real interviews.

“We understand teens may not have extensive work experiences to show so we’ve collaborated with the DSU to create a simple resume questionnaire outlining interests, favorite subjects, extra curricular activities and volunteerism. Our resume questionnaire is found on the DBA and DSU websites and can be filled out, printed and given to business professionals when interviewing” said DBA President, Anne Antonellis.

“This event is about connecting teens with Duxbury business professionals to develop the im-portant life skills of networking, interviewing, follow up, employment and nurturing a long term relationship” said Executive Director, Sue Bradford. “This is the first network and career fair of its type for Duxbury and excited to make this an annual event.”

For more information, business professionals new to DBA are encouraged to contact Anne An-tonellis at [email protected] and teens and young adults can contact Sue Bradford or Jess McDermott at [email protected].
