Selecting fine audio equipment such as the unit you’ve just purchased is only the start of your musical enjoyment. Now it’s time to consider how you can maximize the fun and excitement your equipment offers. This manufacturer and the Electronic Industries Association’s Consumer Electronics Group want you to get the most out of your equipment by playing it at a safe level. One that lets the sound come through loud and clear without annoying blaring or distortion-and, most importantly, without affecting your sensitive hearing.

Sound can be deceiving. Over time your hearing “comfort level” adapts to higher volumes of sound. So what sounds “normal” can actually be loud and harmful to your hearing. Guard against this by setting your equipment at a safe level BEFORE your hearing adapts.

To establish a safe level: • Start your volume control at a low setting.• Slowly increase the sound until you can hear it

comfortably and clearly, and without distortion.

Once you have established a comfortable sound level:• Set the dial and leave it there.

Taking a minute to do this now will help to prevent hearing damage or loss in the future. After all, we want you listening for a lifetime.

We Want You Listening For A Lifetime

Used wisely, your new sound equipment will provide a lifetime of fun and enjoyment. Since hearing damage from loud noise is often undetectable until it is too late, this manufacturer and the Electronic Industries Association’s Consumer Electronics Group recommend you avoid prolonged exposure to excessive noise. This list of sound levels is included for your protection.

DecibelLevel Example

30 Quiet library, soft whispers 40 Living room, refrigerator, bedroom away from traffic 50 Light traffic, normal conversation, quiet office 60 Air conditioner at 20 feet, sewing machine 70 Vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, noisy restaurant 80 Average city traffic, garbage disposals, alarm clock at two feet.

THE FOLLOWING NOISES CAN BE DANGEROUS UNDER CONSTANT EXPOSURE

90 Subway, motorcycle, truck traffic, lawn mower 100 Garbage truck, chain saw, pneumatic drill 120 Rock band concert in front of speakers, thunderclap 140 Gunshot blast, jet plane 180 Rocket launching pad

Screen sizes and discformatsDVD-Video discs come in several different screenaspect ratios, ranging from TV programs, whichare generally 4:3, to CinemaScope widescreenmovies, with an aspect ratio of up to about 7:3.Televisions, too, come in different aspect ratios;`standard' 4:3 and widescreen 16:9.

Widescreen TV usersFor Widescreen TVs, set the player's TV Screenoption (page 21) to the widescreen aspect ratio,16:9 (Wide). When watching discs with the standard 4:3,use the TV controls to select how the pictureappears. Your TV may offer various zoom andstretch options; see the operating instructionsprovided with your TV or monitoring system. Please note that some movie aspect ratios arewider than 16:9. Thus, although the picture isshown in widescreen, these video clips play in a`letter box' style with black bars at the top andbottom of the screen.

Standard TV usersIf you have a standard TV, the TV Screen setting(page 21) of this player should be set to 4:3(Letter Box) or 4:3 (Pan&Scan), depending onyour preferences.4:3 (Letter Box), widescreen discs are shownwith black bars above and below the picture.

4:3 (Pan&Scan), widescreen discs are shownwith the left and right sides cropped. While the picture appears larger, the visible area isactually reduced.

Please note that many widescreen productions overridethe player's settings so that the disc is shown in theauthor's chosen aspect ratio, regardless of the setting.

• Using the 16:9 (Wide) setting with a standard4:3 TV/monitor, or either of the 4:3 settingswith a widescreen TV, results in a distortedpicture.

Extend TerminalTo activate a function, create a switch contact with an electrical ground (Pin 1). Refer to page 71“Interface Connector” to verify pin (Pin 6 through Pin 13) and terminal (SW1 ~ SW8) assignments. There are three switch (SW) functions in the EXTEND TERMINAL CONTROL.

1 To recall Barcode/Command Stacks and executeThe function, STACK GROUP 1 to STACK GROUP 27, is similar to a combination of remote controlbuttons that recall and execute a stack.

2 To execute the function as a remote control commandThe function acts in the same manner as remote control buttons (ENTER, PLAY, STOP, etc.) excludingSCAN FWD/REV.When the remote control’s SCAN buttons ( , ) are pressed and released, the scan operationcontinues. However, the SCAN FWD/SCAN REV keys on the Extend Terminal operate only while helddown; the operation stops when the keys are released.

3 To execute as an advanced remote control buttonAdvanced remote control commands such as numbers from 10 to 20 may be sent as a switch controlcommand.

Some computers require the CTS port to be setto HIGH during communication. It is best toconnect the CTS and DSR port on the computerto the DTR port on the player. During normaloperation the player’s DTR is set to HIGH thusthe unit is able to receive a command at anytime.

Command and StatusDuring normal operation when a computertransmits commands to a DVD-V5000, the playerresponds with the status message, ‘executioncomplete’.

ExampleCOMPUTER DVD-V5000

(1) “Search to Frame 1000” (2) Search Execution (3) Complete

(4) “Play to Frame 2000” (5) Play Execution (6) Complete

Example10SE 20PL<CR> : Search to Chapter 10

then play to 20

The command string enters the buffer with thefirst character and continues sequentially fromleft to right. When <CR> is entered, thecommands are executed sequentially beginningwith the first command in the buffer. In theexample above, the first command is 10SE.

Glossary

Analog audioAn electrical signal that directly representssound. Compare this to digital audio which canbe an electrical signal, but is an indirectrepresentation of sound. See also Digital audio.

Aspect ratioThe width of a TV screen relative to its height.Conventional TVs are 4:3 (in other words, thescreen is almost square); widescreen models are16:9 (the screen is almost twice as wide as it ishigh).

Digital audioAn indirect representation of sound by numbers.During recording, the sound is measured atdiscrete intervals (44,100 times a second for CDaudio) by an analog-to-digital converter, generat-ing a stream of numbers. On playback, a digital-to-analog converter generates an analog signalbased on these numbers. See also Samplingfrequency and Analog audio.

Dolby DigitalUsing a maximum of 5.1 channels of audio, thishigh quality surround system is used in many ofthe finer movie theaters around the world. The on-screen display shows which channels areactive, for example showing 3/2.1. The 3 beingthe two front channels and the center channel;the 2 being the surround channels, and the .1being the LFE channel.

DTSDTS stands for Digital Theater Systems. DTS is asurround system different from Dolby Digital thathas become a popular surround sound formatfor movies.

Dynamic rangeThe difference between the quietest and loudestsounds possible in an audio signal (withoutdistorting or getting lost in noise). Dolby Digitaland DTS soundtracks are capable of a very widerange, delivering dramatic cinema-like effects.

MPEG audioAn audio format used on Video CDs and someDVD discs. This unit can convert MPEG audio toPCM format for wider compatibility with digitalrecorders and AV amplifiers. See also PCM(Pulse Code Modulation).

MPEG videoThe video format used for Video CDs and DVDs.Video CD uses the older MPEG-1 standard, whileDVD uses the newer and much better qualityMPEG-2 standard.

PBC (PlayBack Control) (Video CD only)A system of navigating a Video CD through on-screen menus recorded onto the disc. Especiallygood for discs that you would normally not watchfrom beginning to end all at once—karaokediscs, for example.

PCM (Pulse Code Modulation)The most common system of encoding digitalaudio, found on CDs and DAT. Excellent quality, but requires a lot of data compared to formatssuch as Dolby Digital and MPEG audio. Forcompatibility with digital audio recorders (CD,MD and DAT) and AV amplifiers with digitalinputs, this unit can convert Dolby Digital, DTSand MPEG audio to PCM. See also Digital audio.

Regions (DVD-Video only)These associate discs and players with particularareas of the world. This unit will only play discsthat have compatible region codes. You can findthe region code of your unit by looking on therear panel. Some discs are compatible with morethan one region (or all regions).

Sampling frequencyThe rate at which sound is measured to beturned into digital audio data. The higher therate, the better the sound quality, but the moredigital information is generated. Standard CDaudio has a sampling frequency of 44.1kHz,which means 44,100 samples (measurements)
