President’s Cast
Hello Everyone, I hope this message finds you well and by now your wading boots are soggy, your net smells funny, your waders need a shot of Fabreeze and your fly box is starting to look messy. Wow, have we
gotten off to a great start! We hosted Adam Nidoh since last time. I really enjoyed hearing about the Lakawaxen and Lakawanna rivers. I plan to get to know both a lot better. I learned a lot from Adam especially the theory as to why there are so many big browns in the Lakawanna. With the lack of bigger mayflies the big ones start eating the little ones a little earlier than in streams with a bigger abundance of larger bugs. There are lots of crayfish in the river too and they make a health snack for a growing brown trout. It looks like BWOs, Sulphurs, Tricos, Caddis and midges are on the menu as far as the bugs are concerned. It‘s a great place to work out your streamer muscles too! We had a successful learn to fish classroom/casting day at the VFW. We had five students. Two were members and three joined at the class. These students were very intense. I couldn’t get them to take a break. They wanted to soak up as much info as possible. We had several club members helping
and the students basically had a one on one situation. They all did very well casting too. This made me very happy! Coming up on May 5th we have an on stream class at the little Lehigh. Our on stream demo with Sean Crocker was a smashing success also. It was well attended with guys joining us from the Main Line Fly Tyers and Bucks County Trout Unlimited. I need to get my equipment for this technique and I plan to purchase a Greys 11ft 4wt. I’m not stopping there either. I’ve got my eye on some beautiful specialty contact nymphing rods from Douglas, Sage, Hardy, and Thomas and Thomas too. I can’t wait to really get after it and I can’t thank Sean enough for sharing his knowledge with us. Sean told us that he is working on a lake fishing program. I know this topic is of interest to many of us and I invited Sean back next year to give us a talk on Lake Fly Fishing. I can’t wait for that. The club has lots of irons in the fire concerning community outreach in line with our mission to share our love for fly fishing. That means I’ll have plenty to write about in the future. For now get out fishing. I want to hear about your adventures during the fishing report part of our meeting.
Tightlines and Happy Tying. J Walsh.

May’s Membership Meeting Wednesday May 23th 7:30 PM
Dave Rothrock
April’s Speaker Adam Nidoh
Adam Nidoh, Manager of A&G Outfitters in Dickson City, PA, 570-489-1650,
did a presentation on Fly Fishing the local Streams of his area. Adam is born
and raised in Scranton, PA (still live there). Especially the Lackawanna River
Once again thank you.
Dave Rothrock has been pursuing trout, and other
species, with a fly rod since the mid-1960's and he's
been tying flies for a bit longer than he's been
fishing them. He has fished throughout the East,
into the Midwest, and Europe where he fished great
waters in Austria and Slovenia.
Dave's articles have appeared in FLY FISHERMAN,
AMERICAN ANGLER and PENNSYLVANIA ANGLER
magazines as well as other publications. His fly
patterns have have graced the pages of various
publications, books and calendars. He has presented
programs on fly-fishing related topics to groups
throughout the Eastern U.S. and Canada. Dave is
also a co-author of the book “Keystone Fly Fishing:
The Ultimate Guide to Pennsylvania's Best Water.”
In 2004 Dave and George Daniel teamed together to
compete in the northeast regional qualifier for
Barrett Productions' Fly Fishing Masters
competition. As a team they placed first out of 36
teams in the two day casting competition.
Dave is a former Orvis Endorsed Guide as well as an
IFF Certified Casting Instructor . He has worked
as an instructor in the L. L. Bean fly fishing schools
and has taught fly fishing, casting and fly-tying
classes for various fly shops. Dave currently guides
and teaches fly fishing and casting through his
business, Salmo-Trutta Enterprises. He utilizes many
of the best trout streams in central and north
central PA as his classroom environment.

Fishing Derby: Seniors, Disabled Persons, Disabled Vets Day Saturday, May 12 at 8 AM - 2 PM
Join us for a day of fishing as we dedicate a day towards seniors, disabled persons, and disabled Veterans! Rods and bait will be supplied for all participants! Sandwiches will also be served as our lunch that day For any further info or questions, please contact Borough Dam Fishing Program Chairman Mike Stachel at 215-399-7923
We had beautiful weather and a group of very
enthusiastic students. The most exciting
development has to be the renewed youth
participation. We had three young people all
10 year olds, Bella, Jonah and Alex, that’s right
a girl and two boys who are very interested in
getting into the sport. Alex dragged his Dad
along and it looks like his Dad will be going.
Jonah told me he never caught a fish on a fly
and it’s the one thing he really wants to do. I
saw Bella on the water having a one on one casting lesson with her Grandpop, Dave. She was doing great!
Later Jonah spent $29 of his pocket money on flies at the Hertage Fly Shop. The story is that after the tally
he was a little short but Scott kicked in to make his day. Way to go Scott! This was another group of super
interested students. The brand newbies took the casting lessons from Jay. Jay reported that they all did
surprisingly well for young beginners.
We covered lots of material from equipment to knots, reading the water, rigging a fly rod, flies and casting.
We talked about nymphing, wet fly fishing, dry fly fishing and streamer fishing. It was a lot to learn but it
looks like this group is absorbing it all like a sponge. We all ate very well too. Dave, Steve and Jerry laid
out an impressive picnic!
Overall I’m very happy with our efforts as a club to teach our sport. I’m very happy about the enthusiastic
students. The youth participation bodes well for the future of our sport. The kid spending his money on
flies reminds me of me. The future is looking bright folks.

The Chesapeake Council will hold a 1 day event at Susquehanna State Park on Saturday, September
29th, 2018. Susquehanna State Park is located about 5 miles from the I-95 exit and is easily accessible.
Susquehanna State Park has all the amenities needed to host a nice event with lots of parking, large
picnic shelters (each holds 150), modern restrooms and Deer Creek is within walking distance. There is
also a campground with cabins and electric that remains open through September.
CI testing will be held starting on the 29th (workshop & written test) and the performance testing will

The CC will hold fly fishing classes on the water and most will be 2.5 hours long. Most of these classes
will be taught by an MCI assisted by at least 2 CI’s.
We will invite all the CC Charter and Affiliate Clubs to host a table. They will be able to share their club
activities, recruit new members and have fundraisers.
We will invite all the fly fishing non-profits & other interested parties such as Casting for Recovery,

"Ultra-Shrimp"
Fly Fishers International Fly Tying Group
May’s Fly of the Month
Written by: Jerry Coviello Photographed By: Jerry Coviello
Creator: Bob Popovics Guest Tier: Jerry Coviello
Materials
Hook: Size 4 to 8 Saltwater Hook (Daiichi 2546) Thread: Tan monocord or clear mono Mouth: EP Fibers or Super Hair (color to match your shrimp) Green, White, Clear, Tan, Pink Eyes: I am melting 30 lb mono and adding a drop of UV Resin. Flash: Pearl Krystal Flash Underbody: two strips of .030 lead free wire Body: UV dubbing color to match shrimp. (Pearl, Green, Tan, Pink) Back: EP Fibers or Super Hair Shellback: Thick UV Resin Solarez (I like the Glow in the Dark for muddy waters or for night fishing) Legs: Brown or tan hackle
This is a very simple and effective pattern for Sea Trout (in Jersey we call them Weakfish), Redfish (drum),
Stripers (Rockfish) and Blues. With the UV Resins that came on the market now make tying epoxy type flies
easier to tie. You do not have to place your fly on a rotating drying rack and wait 5 to 10 minutes for them
to dry. You can change the color of the materials to match the shrimp in your area.
8 Flies and Lies
Step 1
Place hook in the vise and attach the tying
thread, bring your thread to the bend of the
hook
Step 2
Tie in the mouth, I am using Super Hair Tan color.
The mouth should extend past the bend of the
hood. The length of the mouth is half the shank
of the hook. Also the ends should not be even
Step 3
Leave some long and short fibers past the
bend. Wrap your thread towards the middle
of the shank of the hook
9 Flies and Lies
Step 4
Trim off the fibers and secure with wraps of
thread and bring your thread back to the bend of
the hook
Step 5
From fishing this a few times the weight of the
epoxy would turn the fly sideways. So to correct
that I added lead free wire to the bottom of the
hook shank
Step 6
First strip of wire added to the
bottom of the shank of the hook
10 Flies and Lies
Step 8
Add a few fibers of Pearl Krystal flash for
flash .
Step 9
I like to have the flash longer then the
mouth. These are used to look like feel-
ers
Step 7
Here is the second strip of lead free wire se-
cured to the bottom of the shank of the hook
11 Flies and Lies
Step 11
Tie the eyes on each side of the body. Eyes should extend past the bend of the hook
Step 12
Tie in a brown or tan hackle for legs
at the bend of the hook
Step 10
Make two mono eyes or buy EP Crab eyes.
Take 30 pound mono and use a lighter to melt
balls at the end of the mono, then add a drop
of Solarez and cure. Use a Black Sharpie and
color the eyes and add more Solarez to make
the eyes bigger
12 Flies and Lies
Step 14
Wrap the hackle through the body using even spacing
Step 15
Trim hackle on the top of the body
Step 13
Dub a reverse taper body. I am using
Shrimp UV Ice Dubbing
13 Flies and Lies
Step 17
Whip Finish and cut the thread
Step 18
Add a coat of UV Resin to
the back of the body
Step 16
Tie the back of the shrimp using either EP Fibers, I am using Super Hair. Extend part of it past the eye of the hook for the tail.
14 Flies and Lies
Step 20
Once you have the desired shape and thickness of your shellback, use the :UV lamp and cure the So-larez
Step 21
Now trim the Super Hair for the length
you want. Usually the length is 1 ½ to 2
times the shank of the hook
Step 19
Once you have a coat of UV Resin on the top of the body, pull the back of the shrimp and lay it down on top of the So-larez. The add a layer of Solarez to the top of the fly to create the shellback

These classes were designed for Fly Fishers International Learning Center. Each class will have a manual and DVD Video for each student, so they can go home and practice the flies they learned. The Beginner Fly Tying Workshop is a prerequisite for Fly Tying Class Level 100, 101 and the Saltwater Fly Tying Class. The Beginner Fly Tying Workshop has been taught at the FFI Fly Fishing Fair and received many complements for how it showed all the tools, materials, flies and the students got to tie one fly. The reason for going to New Hope for these classes is to help spread DVFF to another area of the Delaware Valley.
