President’s Cast

Hello Everyone. I hope this message finds you busy preparing for the new fishing season ahead. There are lots of fun and exciting things in the works. Changes, new members, older members with a rejuvenated focus, general excitement

because we can feel things are happening. Rest assured the docket is filled with interesting speakers. I made sure we’re mostly booked clear out to half way through 2020. An active membership in the DVFF will provide you with a cutting edge view of the fly fishing world. A bold statement but I guarantee it. Just look at our tying class. Some of the nymphs we have tied are being featured in magazines. Eg., the Pink Squirrel Nymph! We tied that one already. We’re up on stuff like nobody’s business. Changes are happening with our learn to fish day. In the past we have always had our learn to fish day at the Little Lehigh. Sad to say that the heritage stretch of the Little Lehigh ain’t what it used to be. I haven’t been finding the numbers of fish. Like it or lump it. Take it down the road and dump it! We’re heading to greener pastures. I don’t want to subject a newby to the technical approach to a snotty trout usually required on the Little Lehigh. We’re scouting the Lizard. What, you’ve never heard of Lizard Creek? I’m not surprised. Guess what? It’s a local secret and it’s usually loaded with hungry trout. Yes, it’s the place I want to take someone new and learning our wonderful sport. I want to have our learn to fish day at a place where the newby has a good chance to apply their newly learned skills and catch a trout! Simple enough. Look out for a raffle at upcoming meetings. Be sure to bring a few extra bucks to the meetings because

we’re going to have some nice things in our raffle. Things that will be fun to win. Valuable things, fly fishing things and stuff, fishing stuff. Who doesn’t like to win fishing stuff? I would like to let you know that my favorite part to the opening of our meetings is when I ask the new members and guests to stand up and be recognized. I usually ask that they stand up, say hello and tell us how they found out about us. I’m having lots of fun lately because we usually have at least three new people at each meeting. If you think about it, that’s some healthy growth. I like it! I’m excited to see the fruits of our labors and hopefully the positive results of our changes. Time will tell. No matter what, I believe we’re going to have lots of fun. We’re in a period of growth and change and I think this is an exciting time for the DVFF. Hopefully I’ll be reporting some great news of our successes prettt soon. So get ready get set it’s almost time to go. Until we meet again! See you soon, Tightlines and Happy Tying Jack Walsh 281-658-9224

Congratulations Jack Walsh

for becoming a member of

MEETING MARCH 27 2019

7:30 PM VFW Hall

1444 Yardley Newtown Rd, Yardley, PA 19067

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!! Guest

speaker is Tim O’Neill for O’Neills

Fly Fishing. Tim ‘s presentation is

“Shad Fishing 101” A look through

the different Shad species we have

available to us. Gear and techniques

will be discussed as well as fly

design

About Tim O’Neill:

Growing up in northern Delaware my family lived the

hunting and fishing lifestyle. I can vividly remember

the first Deer I harvested at age 13. I often recall the

night before Delaware's opening day of Trout season

in 1979, this was my first opening day. My brothers and I sat in front of the T.V. the night before with a block of

processed cheese the size of a car battery. Diligently we would pinch off small bits and roll them into a ball the

size of a pea. We made sure our rods, waders and vests were all up to par and ready to go. The next morning the

three of us, along with my dad, were up early and on the river well before the sanctioned start time. At all of

nine years old the Red Clay looked huge and the amount of people crowded in each hole was overwhelming. I

caught one fish that morning (actually my dad caught it, I just reeled it in) a 10" Rainbow Trout. I remember

staring at the vivid colors of green, purple and silver and being in awe at the sight of "my" trophy. Something

clicked inside me that cold April morning and now, over three decades later, I am still drawn to the beauty of all

types of fish. A Machinist / CAD designer by trade, I have always worked "part time" in hunting and fishing

related outdoor stores culminating in my managing Delaware's only full service fly shop from 2009 to 2014. An

accomplished Archer, Wing-shot, and Rifleman, my true passion has always been with the fly rod, a passion I

hope to pass on

March Fly of the Month

“Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear” Edition: February

Written by: Jerry Coviello

Photographed By: Jerry Coviello

Creator: Keith Fulsher

Tier: Jerry Coviello Keith Fulsher developed and popularized the Thunder Creek style of tying a bucktail streamer. He tied the bucktail in reverse and folded it back over the shank of the hook to create a large minnow type head, then coated it with epoxy. The result was a sleeker looking streamer and less foul up of having the wing wrap under the hook shank. With the newer UV Resins on the market, the Thunder Creek is easy to tie and have ready to fish in minutes. Spoke to Jeff Peck and he said they work on Steelhead just tie bigger and with flash To see a video on how to tie this fly, go https://youtu.be/8JowX5oUbWE Fly of the Month is created by Fly Fishers International Fly Tying Group website https://flyfishersinternational.org/Tying/Educational-Resources/Fly-of-the-Month

Materials for the Rainbow Thunder Creek Streamer Hook: Straight Eye 4X long Daiichi 1750 Streamer Hook Thread: Red 6/0 Body: Silver Mylar Tinsel Eye: 3mm Ice Living Eyes Belly: White Bucktail Wing: Olive over Pink Bucktail folded to make head Head: Solarez UV Thin Resin

12 Flies and Lies

Step 1

Secure the hook in your fly tying

vise making sure the shank of the

hook is level with your table.

For this example I am using a 4X

long hook shank size 4, Daiichi

1750

Attach your tying thread behind

the eye of the hook

Step 2

Bring your thread to the bend of the hook.

I do this to mark where the bend of the hook is.

Step 3

Bring the thread to where the end of your head will be. If I had to put a measurement, one fifth behind the eye of the hook

Page 13: DVFF Facebook Page · March Edition 2019 The Newsletter of Delaware Valley Fly Fishers Volume 36 Edition 3 Photo redit: Sheldon Slusser—Group of Fly Tiers from the area enjoying

13 Flies and Lies

Step 4 Tie in the tinsel at the one fifth spot. Mylar tinsel usually has two sides, one gold and one silver. Tie the tinsel in gold side facing you

Step 5 Add a 5 wraps over the tag end, to really secure the tinsel fold over the end and tie over it.

Step 6 Wrap the tinsel towards the bend of the hook. Wrapping the tinsel over the shank away from you and come under the shank towards you.

Page 14: DVFF Facebook Page · March Edition 2019 The Newsletter of Delaware Valley Fly Fishers Volume 36 Edition 3 Photo redit: Sheldon Slusser—Group of Fly Tiers from the area enjoying

14 Flies and Lies

Step 7 Wrap the tinsel to the bend of the hook. Then wrap towards the tinsel tie in point, this will cover any gaps in the tinsel.

Step 8 Tie off the tinsel one fifth from the eye of the hook

Step 9 Cut the tinsel. Wrap you thread to the eye and back to the head location. This is where we will tie in the bucktail to make the head, wing and belly of the fly

Page 15: DVFF Facebook Page · March Edition 2019 The Newsletter of Delaware Valley Fly Fishers Volume 36 Edition 3 Photo redit: Sheldon Slusser—Group of Fly Tiers from the area enjoying

15 Flies and Lies

Step 10 Turn the hook upside down to tie in the belly of the streamer Tie in a small bunch of white bucktail with the tips extending past the eye of the hook. The length of the bucktail should be the length of the hook shank plus the head length. So when you fold the bucktail back

towards the bend of the hook, the tips will extend a gap length past the bend

Step 11

Cut the butts of the bucktail

Step 12 Turn the hook back to the upright position. Tie in a small bunch of olive bucktail with the tips extending past the eye of the hook. The length of the bucktail should be the length of the hook shank plus the head length. So when you fold the bucktail back towards the bend of the hook, the tips will extend a gap length past the bend

Page 16: DVFF Facebook Page · March Edition 2019 The Newsletter of Delaware Valley Fly Fishers Volume 36 Edition 3 Photo redit: Sheldon Slusser—Group of Fly Tiers from the area enjoying

16 Flies and Lies

Step 13Trim the butts of the olive bucktail .

Step 14 Tie in a small bunch of pink bucktail with the tips extending past the eye of the hook. Just line up the tips of the pink bucktail with the olive bucktail. When you fold over the pink and olive bucktail the pink will be the middle color while the olive will be the top.

Step 15 Cut the butts of the pink bucktail.

17 Flies and Lies

Step 16 : Fold over the pink bucktail to start forming the head of the thunder creek streamer

Step 17 Fold over the olive bucktail and secure it on top of the pink bucktail

Step 18 Securing the bucktail to form the head. Take a few loose wraps and try to spread the top olive bucktail over to help cover the under wraps on the head

18 Flies and Lies

Step 19 Turn the fly upside down and fold over the white bucktail and tie it down. This is the belly of the streamer

Step 20 Turn the fly right side up, with your red thread make a few wraps to form the gills. Whipfinish and cut your thread

Step 21 I like to turn the fly on its side and stick the eyes on the fly. I do each side separately and add Solarez UV Thin Resin to hold eye and form the head

19 Flies and Lies

Step 22 I am using Solarez Thin UV resin to make the head of the Thunder Creek Streamer. Use a little at a time when coating the head and each time hit it with the UV Flashlight to harden it

Step 23 The finished Rainbow Thunder Creek Streamer

These streamers can be tied with a little flash for the wing and vary the sizes to match the fish in the stream. We Fly Fishers get hung up on just catching trout. Try these in lakes and streams for other fish like perch, panfish and bass. Jerry Coviello FFI Fly Tying Group Chairman

OUR FLY FISHING PROGRAMS

PHWFF is unique in that our volunteers are teaching classes on an on-going, long term basis. It is much more than a one day

fishing trip. For many participants, the socialization and camaraderie of the classes are just as important as the fishing outings.

PHWFF relies on Fly Fishers International, Trout Unlimited, and independent fly fishing clubs to conduct the program at the

Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs facilities across the nation. PHWFF volunteers include experienced fly

fishers and guides, all of whom donate their time and knowledge to conduct programs at Department of Defense facilities,

Warrior Transition Units and Department of Veterans Affairs facilities nationwide.

MISSION STATEMENT

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service

personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings.

I was approached by David Riggio, the Pennsylvania Deputy Regional Coordinator for Project Healing Waters, to start a “Project

Healing Waters Program” in our area. There is a need for this program especially in the Horsham area that would be associated

with the Philadelphia VAMC, CBOC in Horsham, they provide PTSD and Behavioral Health services for our veterans.

I have been working with Project Healing Waters for over a year now and see the what we “Fly Fishers and Tiers” provide for our

men and women in need.

BEGINNING STAGES

This program will become an affiliate or charter club under Fly Fishers International, to help with legal and tax code status.

In order to have a viable program, three groups must co-exist:

A fly fishing club willing to provide the volunteers and organize the program.

A DOD or VA medical facility willing to host the program.

Injured military members or disabled veterans willing to participate.

Because each of these groups is unique, no two Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing programs will be exactly the same

It was also brought to my attention that a Project Healing Waters Program should meet no less than 2 times a month. Project

Healing Waters in Coatesville VAMC meet once a week to teach Fly Tying, Rod Building and Fly Fishing Outings.

VOLUNTEERS

I am looking for individuals to help make this happen. These Men and Women gave everything for us it is time to help them.
