President’s Message
Dear members, friends, and sponsors,
To state that the year of 2017 was even9ul is an understatement!
Numerous events were held this year: some familiar, some new,
along with the celebra?ons to commemorate the 125th anniversary
of our Society.
For 2018, the goals of the Board include increasing the number of
events and traffic in our club, streamlining and elimina?ng
unnecessary costs, improving areas of opera?ons that have not
been successful, promo?ng the club and the camp, growing the
membership, and con?nuing to fund capital expenditures and
ongoing repairs and maintenance.
On behalf of the German Society of Winnipeg, happy holidays to
you and all the best in the upcoming year.
Remember - giEs received but not always desired
can be re-giEed next year, even coal ☺
Thank you,
Gary R. Rossol, CPA, CMA
GSW President

Der Treue Husar A Short Profile of some Christmas Customs and Traditions The Advent Wreath (Adventskranz) was first introduced in 1839 in
Hamburg, Germany to the poor children in a home, the Wichernhaus. Johann Hinrich Wichern, a theologian and social reformer, and in charge of the Wichernhaus, wanted to ease the waiting of the children for Christmas by lighting a candle for each day of Advent (28) on a horizontal wheel. This turned out to be
too expensive, as well as too cumbersome, and was changed to four candles (one for each advent week) and to an evergreen wreath, more aligned with the season. A new custom was born, quickly adopted by other Wichern homes and German households. Christmas Market (Christkindlmarkt) is celebrated in every city and town in Germany during the four weeks of Advent, and dates back to the early part of the 14. Century in Munich in Southern Germany. Kiosks and booths cater to visitors with delicious sweets, roasted nuts, and all the necessities to celebrate the festive season, including Christmas decorations - accompanied, of course, by traditional Christmas music. And when the snow silently falls the mood is perfect. Christmas markets have become very popular beyond Germany’s borders. Mulled Wine (Glühwein) Someone may ask what mulled wine has to do with Christmas market; the answer is simple: just try and imagine a Christmas market without it! - Mulled wine is heated red dry wine with lemon slices, sugar, cardamon, orange peels, cinnamon, and cloves. However, there is no need to remember this, as ready-made mulled wine is available in Winnipeg - with or without alcohol. And this year you can make your own by just dumping a mulled wine tea bag into your favourite wine. What could be simpler! The Christmas Tree (Weihnachtsbaum). No, it was not Queen Victoria from Great Britain and her German connections, nor the Amish or Mennonites from the U.S.A., but the German Baroness von Riedesel who, in 1781, had just arrived with her young children. Her husband, Baron Friedrich Adolphus von Riedesel was the commanding officer of the German soldiers fighting for the British. The Quebec government supplied them with accommodation in Sorel. The Baroness insisted that she would not do without a Christmas tree. Her husband, a soldier, knew how to follow orders. Within a little while the soldiers returned with a freshly cut spruce tree, set it up and decorated it. It was an instant success with the local population. The rest is history. The news spread like wildfire. Only two years later the locals in a small hamlet in Saskatchewan, for lack of an evergreen tree decorated a leafless poplar - and celebrated Christmas. - In recognition, the Canadian Post Office issued an entire Christmas stamp set to honour this occasion. To all members of the German Society and their families the Winnipeg Skat Club wishes you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Egon Stanik, Skat Club Vice President

Was ist ein Frühschoppen? So gelingt
der Brunch.
What is Frühschoppen? In parts of
Germany it is understood to be a
Brunch, but also an alcoholic drink
before midday in company. It is the
tradition of meeting in a pub in the late
morning. So come and join your
friends to celebrate this historic
milestone.

Camp Neustadt
Hello Camp Neustadt Campers,
As you may already know invoices for the 2018 camping season have
been sent out. If you have not received your invoice please contact the
office. Lot fees for 2018 are increasing by $35 and tank fees (for those
without a holding tank) will be increasing by $100. In terms of payment
schedules - $450 of the annual camp fees are due by January 31, 2018
with the remaining balance due by April 30, 2018.
2017 has been a good year for the camp in terms of moving forward on
holding tank installa?ons. 12 tanks were installed this year and I am
aware of several more that will be installed at the start of the 2018
camping season. This is an important issue to address and I would like to
thank those campers that have installed holding tanks this year. Your
efforts in improving the camp are appreciated.
Currently the camp has only one vacant lot available for lease for
2018. We started the 2017 year with 7 vacant lots so there has been
good movement on this front.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish
all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year. All the best.
Thanks everyone.
