From Leonard Welsh '22

Dear Leonard and all Dwightonians,

I have been at Dwight forty-four years and I continue to love every second of my work. My recipe for success is a spoonful of passion, courage and will, a dash of inspiration and innovation, a lot of hard work and compassion for yourself and others — lest I forget blend in a handful of smiles.

With appreciation and a smile on my face.

2 From the Chancellor

Dear Dwight Community,

The Yearbook Staff has been working vigilantly the last few months in order to create the 2010-2011 Yearbook. The creation of this book could not have been possible without the tireless work of our staff. Nikki and Kim are the most talented layout editors. They have worked extremely hard. Whether it is by staying at school until 7:00, or working from home on the weekends, they do whatever it takes to finish the spreadsheets on time. Furthermore, they always manage to make their work look effortless. These girls are such talented designers and the Yearbook

t would not have been outstanding without them. I thank you guys so much!

t Sam, Marina, Elizabeth, Matt, Tiffany, and Rose have been very helpful in making sure this Yearbook was complete. Sam took phenomenal pictures while the girls created great layouts. Matt handled the responsibilities of making sure the athletics section was complete. Each of these individuals has helped make this Yearbook what it is. I want to give a special thank you to our wonderful advisor, Ms. Schroeder, who has spent countless hours staying after school even though she was only supposed to stay an hour. I know it was touch and go for a while when we were wondering if the book would get finished, but because of you and your perseverance it is complete. The Yearbook assistant. Dr. Cruz, is amazing for typing

I panel names and page numbers and proof reading countless pages. Without her ' this Yearbook would be grammatically incorrect. Thanks to everyone’s help, the

book is finally finished, and it looks incredible!

Since our generation feels it’s imperative to use the Internet, the Yearbook staff thought the Internet would be the perfect theme for the 2011 book. Each section’s

1 spread is modeled after a different website, which is how we have illustrated our I theme throughout the book.

Finally, the staff would like to dedicate this Yearbook to the 2011 seniors. You guys deserve it!

Yours Truly,

Liz Churgin (Editor-in-chief)

Letter From the Editor-in-Chief 3

This year, The Dwight School's Yearbook was all about change. For the first time In three years, we had an entirely new group of editors. Editor-In-Chief, Liz Churgin, fearlessly stepped into her new role and did a fantastic job leading the group. Senior Editors, Kim Villamor, Nikki Price, Marina Braga, and Elizabeth Brooks, surpassed my expectations with the time and effort they devoted to the project. It should be noted that without Kim and Nikki's artistic skills, we would have been lost. We also welcomed Junior Editor, Sam Needham, to The Dwight School and the Yearbook Staff. He has proven himself to be a valuable asset and has helped bring a fresh perspective to how we organize the book. Last but not least. Sports Editor, Matt Arbess, has done a great job tirelessly hunting down coaches and designing sports page layouts. Along witi the rest of our Yearbook Staff, this hardworking group of individuals has created a Yearbook, which I believe presents Dwight at its best.

Acting as The Dwight School's Yearbook Advisor for the past three years has been a fulfilling experience and finishing this book is somewhat bittersweet. I have enjoyed working alongside such motivated individuals, and I am sorry to see this part of our year come to an end. However, at the same time I am excited for the students and extend my congratulations for their impressive final product.

I need to specifically thank Dr. Linda Cruz for her invaluable assistance. It has been a pleasure working with her, and I am especially grateful for all she did in the fall when I was away.

The Yearbook staff would like to thank:

-Neil Brier, Audrey Enriquez, Elan Hadar, Michelle Hoos, Audrey Miller, Jackie Silvestrl, and Lauren Wlllock for their many photo contributions.

-Eric Dale for his infinite patience when helping us with Senior Pages.

-Sean Davidson, Audrey Miller and Flllz Ozak-Sevll for their assistance with team photos and organizing the Athletics Section.

-Cat Baird and Will Ezor for their overall support. It is wonderful that even though you have both graduated, you continue to be a part of the Yearbook family and to care about the quality of Dwight's Yearbook.

4 Yearbook

As another school year draws to a close, out comes a new Yearbook to remind us of all the fun, happy and engaging moments of the past months. For our seniors, the Yearbook is a way to revisit and to remember the familiar faces of so many years. For the younger students, it is a small but fun window into future possibilities.

Once again, I feel happy to have been a part of this process, and fortunate to have had such capable people to depend on; Editor-in-Chief, Liz Churgin; Senior Editors, Nikki Price, Kim Villamor, Marina Braga, and Elizabeth Brooks; Junior Editor, Sam Needham: and Sports Editor, Matt Arbess.

My special thanks and appreciation go to Ms. Kate Schroeder, without whose skillful guidance none of this would have been possible.

For other uses, see Important Individuals (disambiguation)

The Dwight Faculty is a group of highly trained individuals for the sole purpose of bettering mankind's future by providing it with well-educated human beings. In addition to taking on such a brave task, they are known to sometimes drink copious amounts of coffee and stay after school (to ensure that the students are modeled into the ideal individual). They are particularly skilled in infusing other individuals with what they refer to as the "spark of genius".

The Peer Leadership Program was created four years ago at the Dwight School to address the transitional needs of freshmen students. A Peer Leader is a student who helps his or her classmates to discuss life issues and exchange ideas in a small group setting. The Peer Leaders consist of a group of Upper School students selected for their character, scholarship, integrity and leadership attributes. These older students serve as mentors and role models to the younger students.

Vancouver Leadership TripLast August, Dw ight School students met with students from North London International School (NLIS) and Dwight International School (DIS) at the DIS Cam pus on Vancouver Island in British Colum bia, Canada. O ver three weeks, the students developed their leadership skills by taking part in outdoor activities like rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking and cam ping. Trips included a whale watching tour, h iking in the tem pera te rainforest of the W est Coast trail, and visits to a cultural center for the native Q uw 'utsun ' People and to a nearby Eco-V illage. Throughout the trip, students learned from these experiences as well as deve loped the valuable leadership qualities of team work, com m unication, in itiative and reflection.-Matthew Moran, Chaperone

The fall main stage production was a double bill of two one act plays: Aria da Capo by Edna St. Vincent Millay, an expressionistic play that incorporates many well known classical theatre genres and characters. The Bald Soprano by Eugene Ionesco, a signature piece of the theatre of the absurd. True to the tradition of theatre at Dwight the shows were performed at an Off Broadway venue and featured students of MYP Drama Ten class and the IB Theater DP classes of grades eleven and twelve. This delightful and illuminating production rivals the highest quality that the theatre program has produced in the last ten years and is also among the funniest and most entertaining we have ever seen here at Dwight.

With so many new students, this was a building year for girls varsity tennis. The team was led by Captain Liz Churgin and seniors Mikela Goldman (1st singles) and Casey Zuckerman (1st doubles.) Despite some difficult travel times and a few injuries, the girls worked hard at each match and demonstrated great spirit and sportsmanship. Throughout the season they honed their skills, winning against Long Island Lutheran after being defeated earlier in the season and crushing Columbia Prep with a 4-0 victory. Next year we hope to gain more new players and continue to build a strong team around our returning veterans.

This past fall the Dwight M iddle School Soccer Team com piled an am azing record of 15 w ins and 0 losses winning the A lPSL league cham pionship and the Cardigan Mt. School Soccer tournam ent in Canaan, NH. The A team consisted of 18 ta lented players from 8 different countries. The B team consisted of 10 less experienced but just as enthusiastic players who worked hard and showed solid im provem ent throughout the season.

Most impressive was the A team 's ability to th ink the gam e as a result, their passing and com m unication skills were several levels above those of the ir opponents. Head coach Neil Brier noted that it was the only team he has coached in the past 30 years whose defense was so solid that the m idfie lders felt at ease working the ball to the backfie ld to change the direction of the ir attack.

During the season, the players deve loped a team spirit which carried them through the final hard fought games in the Cardigan tournam ent including an exciting 1-0 cham pionship gam e win over a talented Eaglebrook School squad from Deerfie ld, MA.

Another factor in the team 's success was the ir mental toughness and sportsm anship. Through 15 games, no one on the team received a ye llow or red card even when other team s became frustrated at being outplayed.

The team benefited from Coach Ehrlich's challenging conditioning practices and the contribution of several guest coaches. These included Ladi O guntoyinbo, a form er college soccer and lacrosse standout at Hofstra University, who played goa lkeeper for Coach Brier when he coached in NH, Mr. Andreas Van der Linder and Mr. W illian D 'Andrea, two parents who have played the gam e at very high levels, and guest coaching

i appearances from Varsity Coach Jason Coy and form er Dartmouth College player, Mr. Karl Loya.

Completing the perfect storm was the incredible support the team received from the players' parents who game to cheer the team on regardless if the gam e was played on Randall's Island or in Canaan, NH. It was

truly a season that the players and coaches will cherish for years to come! Athletics 99

Coach Comments:

The Dwight Varsity Soccer team competed

under the motto, “ALL in, ALL out.” Lead by

Senior Co-Captains, Dean Emmanuelli and

Daniel Maren, the defense held opponents to less than 2 goals per

game. Offensively, Dwight netted 58 goals while only giving up 29. Their overall record was 9-4-1 with ACIS Division

II regular season and tournament runner up trophies. Post-season

awards went to Jeff Banastey for most goals,

George Domaille for most assists and

Federico Marchese for rookie of the year. Game highlights included a 7-2

victory over Friends Seminary, a 1-1 draw

against league champions UNIS, and a last second goal to beat

Staten Island 4-3. Senior Louis Luxenberg summed up the season best in the team huddle after a tough last game

when he proclaimed, “Be proud... Dwight soccer is on the rise... our level of play from last year to this year was the difference

between NIGHT and DAY!”

This year, the girls Varsity Volleyball team consisted of 11 girl, most returning from last year. The team started pre-season practice in the last week of August with our newly established Girls JV team. The team was led by Senior, Anika Kim, who was also the setter of the team.

One of the highlights of the season was our first victory in a first non-league game against Friends School. The game was one of the best games this team had played so far within the three years they had been playing together. Another was the 2-1 win against Steiner School. In this game Naomi, one of the starters and middle hitters, got injured when the score was 1-1. Nevertheless, the team worked very hard and won this game 2-1 displaying outstanding team spirit and support for their injured team mate. We also had an amazing 2-1 win over Trevor Day School in another non-league game towards the end of the season. In the end, the girls improved their volleyball skills and shared many memorable fun moments that they will remember for the rest of their lives. The team finished the regular season in 5th place with a respectable 5 wins and 6 losses.

The Dwight Middle School Boys Basketball team fielded two teams

this season. The 8th grade and 7th grade team together

practiced all season on building character, executing

as a team and making adjustments. Individually each member improved

on basketball specifc skills. Game highlights

included a last second win against MCS on a shot by Josh

Stops, a well executed half court press against Child’s School and a

defensive shut down of AlPSL league and tournament

champions, Heschel. Post-season awards went to Co-Captain

Max Stamatakis who led the team in scoring, averaging 16.7 points a

game. Fellow Co- Captain, Ethan Arbess was

defensive player of the year for his low defensive stance, shot

blocking and rebounding. Taking charges, hustling for 50/50 balls

and out rebounding taller opponents, James Kon was given the “Mr. Everything” award.

Felipe D’Andrea was declared “Up and Comer.”

The Boys Varsity Basketball Team began this season's journey back in mid-August at our annual summer camp in upstate New York when we all sacrificed some of the last days of August before the school year began in September. This was when we started the inthcate process of putting together the chemistry that makes for a championship team. We had won our conference regular season championship and playoff championship for three straight years, so our goals for this season were very clear--to repeat a fourth time as ACIS Champs both in the regular season and the playoffs and to advance in the NYSAIS tournament.

It was a season of adversity, perseverance, and tremendous individual success stories; a story of a team that refused to allow any blow of adversity-no matter how potentially devastating--to deter them from their quest to always do their very best.

The adversity began right away at summer camp when the announcement had to be made that a senior starter would not be returning to the school. Right away the team had to make adjustments in order to re-invent their team identity. Then once the winter came and official practices began, we once again were hit with severe adversity when one more senior starter was potentially lost for the entire season because of injury, and then shortly thereafter we lost a junior starter for almost the entire season also to an injury.

We spent most of the season with only 8 healthy players often enlisting the help of former players who happened to be in town or just friends of the program to come in and be our 9th and 10th players , so we could actually scrimmage five on five in practice. As is often the case when we are forced to either get better or fail, the players learned one of the most important life lessons: in the middle of difficulties lies opportunities.

Every player on this team crossed the abyss, so to speak, and took a step into the unknown, and as result found out that each of them is far more capable of true greatness than they had ever realized. The team battled and clawed in every game. We traveled to Washington DC in December and lost three games in a row to high-caliber programs, and then returned to NYC and solidly beat a tough Packer Collegiate team primed to finally beat us in our time of apparent weakness. We lost to Collegiate (this year's State Champion for the 4th year in a row) by only 9 points in a game that proved to our guys that we could still be a good team despite the loss of key players. Tied 23-23 at the half to Polyprep. Split in the regular season with arch-rival Friends Seminary in two typical barn-burner contests. At the end of the regular season, this group of young men had found a way to still accomplish a co-championship with Friends Seminary, both teams finishing 11-3 in the league. This set the stage for a final showdown between the two schools in the ACIS Playoff Championship. Fnends won this game causing us to fall short of our goal of a double four-peat, but it did not take away from all that this team had accomplished. Watching them play, even in defeat, could not help but make you proud. They were a true team. They unconditionally loved each other through the good times and the bad times. They were coachable. They just kept getting better. They never stopped trying to do their very best every time they stepped on the court in both practices and games.

So, this team finished as Co-Champions of the ACIS regular season and runner-up of the playoffs. We lost in the first round of NYSAIS tournament to Dalton in a game that again even in defeat was an incredible performance by our boys including a magical individual performance by Eric Shalom as he returned from injury for the final game of his career. This season will also be remembered for how 6'8 senior Max Bock became the most dominant player in the league. Lastly, this season means a heart-felt good-bye to senior Dale Campbell who has spent the last fours on the varsity team and played a major role on four different championship basketball teams here at The Dwight School.

Every season has its own set of unique cliallenges. We graduated four seniors last year, and started the season with two returning players. The addition of senior transfer Tia Scott left us with the enviable problem of figuring out how to mesh two senior all-star guards with freshman starters Naomi Adago and Cidney Brown and soccer star Tracy Siris. In senior guards Toni Smith and Tia Scott we had the two best players on the court in every game. The true beauty of this season was that it revealed basketball for the team sport it is. When we were the “Toni and Tia Show” we struggled. When we played as a team we flourished. True it’s nice to have all stars who can carry a team, but we always needed a whole team effort to get over the top.At different points in the season players came off the bench to make huge contributions—Olivia Soderini came off the bench in overtime in the ACIS championship game. Hailey Petrick came off the bench and provided much needed defense in a must-win league game at Packer. Olivia Stone was able to play the entire game against Green Farms Academy in the Rye Country Day Tournmament, holding her own on defense and even taking a charge! Alex Sterck scored a season high 14 points against Churchill. After a 3-3 start we went on a tear, finishing the season on a 17-1 tear. We finished 20-5. We played 10 games this year that were the kind of single-digit games that make coaching fun (or ulcer-inducing). We were 8-2 in those games single digit games. This was also a season of firsts. We swept the Ivy League teams in the regular season for the first tirne in my 7 years at Dwight. After three unsuccessful trips to the ACIS championship games, we had had an amazing overtime win over SIA to capture that elusive ACIS Championship. We made States with an at- large bid for the first time in my 7 years. We won a game in the States for the first with an upset win over 3-seed Immaculata. Though we ultimately came up short in the semi-finals against Hackley, it was a season to remember! With Toni and Tia’s graduation it is truly a changing of the guard in girls basketball.

The Boys and Girls Varsity track and field team is poised to have their most successful season in over ten years. The Tigers have 45 student-athletes, with half as fresh recruits. Newly appointed Junior Captains: Kristen Tsutsui and George Domaille, join Senior Captains: Andrea Bell and Dan Maren to lead this young group to their full potential. These four have been regular qualifiers for League Championships and State Championships and have been model student-athletes. At this point early in the season, there have been several outstanding performances, including personal records from Juniors Shannon Eagles, Amanda Farrell, Lidia Hendersen, Andrea Ho, and Sophomore Jerry Yen in addition to surprise performances from newcomers Josefine Brekke, Taji Phillips, Sam Needham, Federico Marchese, Jelle Weulen-Kranenberg, and Sammy Russell. The coaches look forward to seeing who will step up in the new events such as triple jump and hurdles and which key returning members will make the commitment to bring this team to the next level. Senior Louis Luxenberg is joined in the throws by Freshmen Chris McEwen and Jon Gregory and Juniors Maggie Russell, Alexa Runsdorf, and Stephanie Chu. Senior Travis Janeway is joined in the jumps by Jelle, Federico, Sam, Kristen, Shannon, and 8th grade standouts Max Stamatakis and Jack Needham. It is clear that the hard work and disciplined training during the winter track season will undoubtedly add to each athlete’s success this season. While it is certainly a positive that this team’s efforts on the track are impressive, we are most proud that this team is FILLED with stellar people that consistently do things with integrity!

The highlight of the 2010 Dwight golf season was the ability to field a competitive team for all of our matches. Since we were not in a league it was im portant for us to learn how to be com petitive in our scrimmage matches. In only our second year, we had five players who were returning and were able to improve significantly in the off season.

In 2011 the Dwight golf team will compete in the Big Apple League. It will be our first season in th is league and we will have for the third consecutive year all of our team members returning. W e have underclassmen w ho will be starting and this is a com petitive advantage in the years to come. This will be our th ird full season as a team, everyone will be working diligently so that we will enjoy a successful season.

Congratulations!Today is your day.

You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself any direction you choose.

You're on your own and you know what you know, and YOU are the kid who'll decide where to go.

You'll get mixed up, of course, as you already know.

216 Churgin

You'll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go.

So be sure when you step.Step with care and great tact

and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act.

Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never m\x up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed?Yes! You will, indeed!

(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed) -Adapted from Dr. Seuss
