A Roughneck Grows Up The Movie Comes of Age /CLAMOUR and motion pic- VJ _ tuxes haven't always been syn onomous. And Hollywood hasn' always been the cinema citadel. Movies, as we know them today ipeat their infancy in the singular! unromantic town of Fort Lee, New Jersey. As reported by Rex Beach In the February Cosmopolitan Ha gulne, they outgrew their side street nicelodeons and moved Into better quarters. "The guttersnipe grew nto long pants," he writes, "bu with them it put on the sweater an< cap of a hoodlum. No one dreamei then that it would ever mend its ways and turn decent, much less that t would become a member of the smart set, possess a string of polo ranies and dunk In its own Pompeian 'swimming pool." And they fount heir man a trick ipper and cow- ray monologuist in the current Ziegfeld Follies, who hardly knew what a camera looked like. When the picture was finished he .urned out beautifully. He was natural, sincere, utterly unaffectec and not In the least camera-con- scious. At the death of his buddy he wept like a schoolgirl. That few of the thousands who have such dreams ever get inside a city room, much less rise above run- of-the-mill work, seems to be no de- terrent at all. They dream on. Once in a while there is an exception and such an exception is Dorothy i£il- gallen, the Voice of Broadway on the New York Journal-American and the only girl Broadway col- umnist. Miss Killgallen has been In "the racket" a scant ten years. Daughter of the famous reporter Jimmy Kill- ? alien, she got her first break one une day ten years ago when she went to work on the New York Eve- ning Journal for $20 a week. Louis Sobol, writer of Manhattan Caval- cade, tells the story of her career in the February issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine. He remembers: "The boys in the city room of the Journal when she first went to work for the papor nicknamed her Mickey Mouse. . . . When she brought in two startling news beats on successive days, someone nicknamed her, half in derision, half in admiration, the Girl Wonder. She has been the Girl Wonder in the opinion of her fellow workers ever since." Miss Killgallen started the hard way by "covering" the morgue and within two years was competing with the country's best journalists on straight news. At twenty-three she competed in an around-the-world race with two other reporters and became the first woman to fly across the Pacific in a passenger plane and the first woman to fly around the wprld. In her ten years, Miss Killgallen has risen from an average yearly wage of $1,000 a year to approxi- mately $20,000. She goes to work in a chaufforod limousine and has a private secretary and a personal of- fice boy. slices for supper. Or use cold leftover boiled sweet or white potatoes, slicing as directed above. To make Russian Dressing, just add 2 tbsp. chill sauce to *A c. mayonnaise. You'll naturally want your lettuce chilled, so, the night before, wash it and put it into refrigerator bag ' or vegetable crisper. Put your can of kadota figs in to chill at/ the same time. Certainly '.he soup course Is not a problem, for a can opener does that trick. We'll bet that your husband will want you to make the Broiled Stuffed Frankfurters often. A Roughneck Grows Up The Movie Comes of Age

/CLAMOUR and motion pic- VJ _ tuxes haven't always been syn onomous.

"The guttersnipe grew nto long pants," he writes, "bu

with them it put on the sweater an< cap of a hoodlum. No one dreamei then that it would ever mend its ways and turn decent, much less that t would become a member of the

smart set, possess a string of polo ranies and dunk In its own Pompeian

'swimming pool." An outfit called Sam Goldwyn

'Ictures was shooting a picture a< he time called "Laughing BU

Hyde." The title role called for some one shy, awkward, whimsical, witha western drawl. And they fount heir man a trick ipper and cow- ray monologuist in the current

Ziegfeld Follies, who hardly knew what a camera looked like.

When the picture was finished he .urned out beautifully. He was

natural, sincere, utterly unaffectec and not In the least camera-con scious. At the death of his buddy he wept like a schoolgirl. Oddly enough,

>e greatest comic of our times was introduced to the screen through the medium of tears. His name was Will iogc». i

Dorothy Killgallen Defies Jinx On Girl Reporters

ONE of the favorite dreams of American youth, both male

add female, is of themselves as il lustrious members of the working press, in other words, as reporters. That few of the thousands who have such dreams ever get inside a city room, much less rise above run- of-the-mill work, seems to be no de terrent at all. They dream on. Once in a while there is an exception and such an exception is Dorothy i£il- gallen, the Voice of Broadway on the New York Journal-American and the only girl Broadway col umnist.

Miss Killgallen has been In "the racket" a scant ten years. Daughter of the famous reporter Jimmy Kill- ? alien, she got her first break one

une day ten years ago when she went to work on the New York Eve ning Journal for $20 a week. Louis Sobol, writer of Manhattan Caval cade, tells the story of her career in the February issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine. He remembers:

"The boys in the city room of the Journal when she first went to work for the papor nicknamed her Mickey Mouse. . . . When she brought in two startling news beats on successive days, someone nicknamed her, half in derision, half in admiration, the Girl Wonder. She has been the Girl Wonder in the opinion of her fellow workers ever since."

Miss Killgallen started the hard way by "covering" the morgue and within two years was competing with the country's best journalists on straight news. At twenty-three she competed in an around-the-world race with two other reporters and became the first woman to fly across the Pacific in a passenger plane and the first woman to fly around the wprld.

In her ten years, Miss Killgallen has risen from an average yearly

wage of $1,000 a year to approxi mately $20,000. She goes to work in a chaufforod limousine and has a private secretary and a personal of fice boy.
