Rabbi’s Message Will we see miracles or mud? Before we go to the
seder, let us consider God’s miraculous deeds in Exodus
14: 21-25 : “Then Moses held out his arm over the sea and
the Lord drove back the sea with a strong east wind all
that night, and turned the sea into dry ground. The waters
were split, and the Israelites went into the sea on dry
ground, the waters forming a wall for them on their right
and on their left. The Egyptians came in pursuit after them into the sea, all of
Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and horsemen. At the morning watch, the Lord looked
down upon the Egyptian army from a pillar of fire and cloud, and threw the Egyp-
tian army into panic. He locked the wheels of their chariots so that they moved
forward with difficulty. And the Egyptians said, ‘Let us flee from the Israelites,
for the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.’”
What does it mean, God “locked the wheels” of their chariots? Several
midrashim join Rashi in teaching, the pillar of fire burned the chariot wheels and
they dragged. Now, give this a thought. What were the chariots dragged in?
The following midrash describes someone in every family. It is not from
the classic midrashim, I learned this from Rabbi Lawrence Kushner.
Passover is about how God made a mighty miracle. We learn of how the
Sea of Reeds split, and of how the Israelites marched through in joy, and of how
the Egyptians drowned. But what was it really like on that day? What was it like
for the people who lived through it?
Two Israelites were making their way through the wet ground, for alt-
hough the waters of the Sea of Reeds were piled up on each side, it was still a lit-
tle wet... muddy if you will. Shimon and Reuven were making their way through
the mud. Shimon was ecstatic. His life had been saved, and God had done a won-
der that moved everyone who saw it to shout with joy. Reuven schepped all the
way across. He muttered to himself as he trudged, "Look at all this mud! I'm
wearing a brand new pair of boots, that I bought just before we left Egypt. And by
the time we get to the other side, these boots are going to be so full of mud and I
will never get them clean again." Shimon was full of joy and gratitude because he
saw the glory of God. Reuven only saw the mud, and he only saw his ruined
boots, and so he grumbled all the way across the Red Sea until he got to the other
side.
And when you go to the seder, on Monday evening, March 25th, who
will you be? Will you be filled with gratitude or grumbling? The choice is yours.
From my family to yours, we wish you a zissin (sweet) Pesach filled with health
and happiness. And may God protect the land and people of Israel.

experience.
Two grants will be given annually, an

What is the Emily Goldsmith Memorial Fund?
Emily Goldsmith, of blessed memory, was the daughter of Dick and Judy, sister
of Josh and Zach. She became Bat Mitzvah and was Confirmed at our congrega-
tion. On March 21, 2002, after six days in a coma she succumbed to injuries re-
ceived as a passenger in a vehicle that was struck by a multiple drunken driving
offender.
The Goldsmith family established a perpetual scholarship fund to “impact” young
people. Anything that will impact young people, make a memory, awaken the
inner-self, is the goal of Emily’s fund. This is exactly what happened when Em
spent six weeks at the Alexander Muss High School in Israel. The friends she
made from all over the country, the hands-on education in Israel, the memories,
experiences, impacted her and changed the direction of her life. Em’s love for
Israel was so great that she said upon her graduation from Kenston High School,
she would be returning to Israel to attend college. Unfortunately and tragically in
2002, she was killed three months prior to her high school graduation.
Em’s love for her faith, our temple, and desire to live in Israel, fostered, and then
gave her family the drive to establish this fund in her loving memory. This fund
gives financial aid to anyone going to Israel, or to the Holocaust Museum in
Washington D.C. on a planned, structured educational program, such as the Alex-
ander Muss High School in Israel.
This Temple Fund perpetuates Emily’s love of Israel and can help other kids have
the phenomenal experience Em had. We know there are many worthwhile funds
within our congregational family. We also know how important the next genera-
tion is to the Jewish people. A donation to Emily’s fund, of whatever amount,
will help students of financial need, deepen their love and appreciation of Israel.
May Emily Goldsmith’s memory be for a blessing.
From a Letter Recently Received
By Rabbi Matt Eisenberg:
Dear Rabbi:
We thank your congregation for the
recent donation of new hats, gloves
and toys. Your contribution is much
appreciated. It is because of the
generosity of our old, and new,
friends that we can work through
challenging times and serve the
women who depend upon us.
With sincere gratitude,
Sherri Brandon

From the President’s Desk
By Joy Gray
As this is my last President’s column of my 2-year term, I’d like to mention a few highlights and give out a few thank
yous. Sure, being the president is certainly full of glam: secret service coverage, Air Force one, a personal chef, getting
to watch season 3 of “Downton Abbey” before it makes it to PBS…. Oh, sorry, got carried away. That’s THE President,
not TINT’s president. However there are certain distinct pleasures involved in this job too.
Working with such a dedicated and hard-working group of people. Until you are president, you never realize
how much time and how much passion our board bestows upon this holy congregation, helping it meet its mis-
sion. You’ve heard the statement, “If you want something done, ask a busy person”; that encapsulates our
board, especially those who serve on the exec board. Creative minds, loving hearts, giving spirits – I am ever
grateful. And I would be remiss if I did not mention Marcie running our office and Brenda running our kitchen
and housekeeping – aren’t we lucky to have them, and haven’t I been lucky to be able to count on them!
Our renovated kitchen. Finally. With some dedicated donations (we could still use more, by the way) and the dog-
ged supervision and stewardship of Doug Wieder, we finally have better storage, a working dishwasher, new
flooring – in fact, an honest to gosh workable kitchen. Let the noshing begin!
Mary Doria Russell and Rabbi Joseph Telushkin. I may not get to host cool concerts in the White House, but I
did get to meet and introduce these two wonderful writers and thinkers, as they inspired us and our reading for
our past two Speaker Series.
Rabbi Matt. One does not have to be president of this congregation to get to interact with our very special rabbi, as
most everyone knows. But as president it has certainly been important to have a rabbi who continues to inspire
me by his unbounded optimism and his thought provoking teaching during Shabbat services and board meet-
ings. And then there are his jokes – and his ties.
In fact, as luck would have it, as I leave the office of president, I realize I lose none of the things that make this congre-
gation so important to me. Working with the board and temple staff – check. Using our kitchen – check. Enjoying our
speakers and our religious and social events – check. Being refreshed spiritually and mentally each Shabbat – check. I
do have to give back that close in parking space reserved for the president, but that’s a small price to pay for my being a
part of this most special congregation. See you around – always.
One New York synagogue was notorious for its exclusiveness. One day a homeless Jewish man entered the
synagogue, wanting to pray. He approached the rabbi and told him that he wished to join the synagogue. Not
knowing what to say, the rabbi suggested that the homeless man take the night to reflect on which house of
worship would truly suit him best.
The following day the homeless man returned to the exclusive synagogue.
Frustrated, the rabbi asked the man if he had done any introspection as he had suggested.
“Oh yeah,” replied the homeless man. “In fact, God came to me in a dream last night to discuss it with me.”
“I see,” said the rabbi. “And what did he tell you?”
“God asked me what shul I wanted to daven in, and I said yours. And He said ‘Oh no, you won’t be able to get in there.’
And I said, ‘Why not?’ and He said, ‘Because I’ve been trying to get into that shul for years but I can’t get in.’”

MEET CARDBOARD RABBI And get ready for TINT’s Annual Golf Marathon!
Once again a familiar figure at TINT is lurking in our entrance, ready to
greet anyone who comes to services or religious school or meetings.
Well, maybe “greet” is a bit of a stretch since that welcoming face and
very flat body belong to -- Cardboard Rabbi, star of TINT’s 6th Annual
Golf Marathon, this year on Monday, June 10th, once again at Legend
Lake Golf Course. Actually, the star of the event is our very real Rabbi
Matt — who, along with intrepid year-
ly golfers Paul Singerman, Steve New-
man, Jeff Basch and Doug Wieder —
once a year plays 100 holes of golf in
ONE DAY.
Why, you ask? Why not! Yearly this
golf outing provides some intrepid
golfers an opportunity to golf to their
heart’s content while also raising mon-
ey in our temple’s biggest fundraiser of
the year, necessary to help us continue
with our many tzedakah and education-
al missions.
Want to participate?
Play golf for $250 (or get sponsored to
raise even more for the temple) for the
entire day, breakfast, lunch, snacks and
beverages, and a dinner at the grill when you are all done. Bring a friend.
Bring 3 and make a foursome. (Don’t play golf? Neither does Mark
Friedman, and he participates!)
Want to be a part of helping the temple without playing golf that day? Be
on our rabbi’s solicitation team and help make phone calls to those who
sponsor him (no cold calls, we promise). Jeff Sorkin leads the team with
Stan Raskin and Rick Brown as perennial callers (yes, Rick plays golf
too).
Can’t get the day off for golf and can’t find the time in the evenings to
make phone calls but still want to help? Then make a donation in support
of the rabbi’s gargantuan effort or support another one of our brave golf-
ers. Call Marcie in the temple office and put your donation on your credit
card or send in your check – indicate they are for the golf outing, please.
Watch the Shabbat announcements and future temple bulletins for re-
minders of this event, but don’t put it off: call Marcie in the temple office
today to volunteer to be a part of this event in one way or another. Re-
member: Cardboard Rabbi never sleeps, and he is watching YOU.
Mazel Tov to our B’nai Mitzvah!
Reece Singerman
Schmitt is a seventh grader at Solon Middle School. His
favorite subjects are math and
language arts because “you
use them every single day.”
Reece likes being outside, playing sports, and
riding bikes, when the weather is cooperating.
Why become a Bar Mitzvah? “You become a
man in the eyes of the Jewish community and
you earn more responsibilities and more free-
dom. In February, I went with the Confirma-
tion class to deliver the PB&J sandwiches we
make every week after Erev Shabbat Services.
It was pretty amazing to see how happy those
people were when we went to the homeless
shelters. And it’s good to know that they are
being fed through our tzedakah.”
Mazel Tov to Reece, grandparents Kim and
Paul Singerman, his mother Annie and father
Randy, Aunt Shari, Uncle Scott and the rest of
the extended family. Join us as Refael is called
to the Torah, Saturday morning, April 20,
2013 @ 10:30 a.m.
Sarah Borow is a sev-enth grader at Agnon
School. Her favorite class is
art, especially printing and
carving. She loves to draw
and sketch designs for
clothes and accessories. She hopes to make a
career of it, one day.
Why become a Bat Mitzvah? “It is the right
thing to do for a girl at my age. I am becoming
an adult in the Jewish tradition and look for-
ward to chanting from our Torah scroll.”
Mazel tov to Sarah, her grandparents Rabbi
Fred and Helen Eisenberg, her mother Rachel
and father Israel, her aunt Elizabeth, uncle
Matt and aunt Pat, cousins Teddy and Maya,
and sister Hannah. Sarah will be called to the
Torah on Saturday morning, April 27 @ 10:30
a.m. Everyone in the congregation is invited to
come and share this simcha with her family.

vital part of our team, volunteers come
from all walks of life and have a variety
of skills, talents and abilities.
Opportunities to serve are diverse: visit
patients and families to provide
companionship, socialization and
comfort; help with legacy work,
transportation, light housework, meal
preparation, run errands, make phone
calls, help with clerical work, attend
health fairs, make presentations.
Volunteers with specialized
professional qualifications and training
are also needed: attorneys, licensed
hairdressers, massotherapists, pet
therapy dogs and their handlers.
The next east side series of volunteer
classes will be held at Hospice of the
Western Reserve, 300 East 185th
Street, Cleveland, 44119 on Saturdays,
April 6 (8:30 a.m.– 12:30 p.m.) and
April 13 and 20 (8:30 a.m.—4:30 p.m.).
Teen and nonclinical volunteers

A Note from Mark Friedman, TINT VP of Membership
Most of us believe that membership outreach is the sole responsi-
bility of the persons who contribute their time, energy and talents
as members of the Membership Committee. That is partially true.
These folks work hard, devote time, and use their skills to help de-
fine programs and develop opportunities in which to attract new
congregants to our wonderful synagogue. But, we cannot be suc-
cessful without the efforts of all congregants.
For example, consider the efforts of Rabbi Matt in this regard: At
every opportunity, he makes a true effort to “recruit” a new congre-
gant. By being himself and taking a true interest in every individu-
al who enters our temple for services or every individual he engag-es in the community who has need of a rabbi, he imparts a distinct
message about the nature of our congregation, its members, our
religious school, in fact the many attributes of becoming a part of
Temple Israel Ner Tamid. In other words the rabbi becomes the
best advertisement for joining our congregation just by being a rep-
resentative of our congregation.
Now consider that each and every year, as a result of a congregant
passing away or moving out of the area, we have to make-up al-
most 7% of our congregational base. Just to stay even. So, the
task of maintaining and growing our congregation base is always a
challenge. Yet, so important to the lifeblood and future of Temple
Israel Ner Tamid.
So what can you do? Each of us knows a family member, a friend,
a neighbor who is unaffiliated. At whatever opportunity that may
arise, as part of a totally unrelated discussion, as a simple nudge,
ask that person why they are not affiliated. All of us have different
reasons for being part of a Jewish Congregation. I will not attempt
to enumerate some of those reasons here. But there is one reason
that prevails over all others - We are Jewish. We believe that by
heritage or choice, a thread ties us to each other – and back to a
rich and beautiful culture. It is this thread that binds us together, no
matter our liturgical beliefs.
Maintaining this thread and strengthening this thread is our guaran-
tee of the future of our culture. It may be the only pathway to our
future. It is this thread that keeps Temple Israel Ner Tamid vital
and growing.
So, what can you do? Follow Rabbi Matt’s lead. Don’t be hesitant
to ask someone to consider the many benefits of becoming a con-
gregant of Temple Israel Ner Tamid. Don’t be hesitant to seek out
this opportunity to strengthen our thread. By doing so, you help
strengthen the thread for all of us – for all Jewry around the world.

Put our June 2014 Israel trip on your calendar, details to follow!
“Next year, in Jerusalem!” At the conclusion of the Passover Seder we sing l’shannah ha’ba’ah b’yerushalayim -
next year in Jerusalem. Soon, we are presented with an opportunity to fulfill that prayer.
In June 2014, travel to Israel with our Rabbis. This will be a meaningful and exciting, escorted tour of Israel going from Tel Aviv to
the Dead Sea to Jerusalem, with visits to Safed, the Golan Heights, Masada, Yad VaShem, Haifa, our holy places and archaeologi-
cal sites.
Very tentative dates: June 12-20, 2014
Very tentative pricing: land package $3500, airfare $1800 -- will include hotel, some meals, motorcoach transportation and more.
If it is too early to establish dates and pricing, then why announce the trip? To let you know as early as possible, because a trip of
this importance requires time for people to organize their calendars and finances. FYI, the congregational trip in June 2009 cost
about $2500 land, $1800 air. By this summer we will have firm dates and prices.
Call Rabbi Matthew Eisenberg if you are interested, (440) 473-5120.
