한글 (Hangeul) – Korean Alphabet

1. Korean is the language spoken by about 63 million people in north east Asia including South and North Korea.

2. Hangeul is one of the most unique and scientific inventions in the world.

3. Hangeul was invented in 1443 during the reign of King Sejong (1418~1450), the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty.

1. King Sejong the Great is regarded as one of the most enlightened kings in Korean history.

2. He is best remembered for creating the unique Korean alphabet –Hangeul.

3. Hangeul enabled literacy to become more available to the general population.

4. UNESCO awards King Sejong Literacy Prize to those who made contributions to fight against illiteracy.

The Korean alphabet was originally called Hun-min-jeong-eum, which meant “The Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People.”

1. There are 24 simple letters in the Korean alphabet – 14 consonants and 10 vowels. * 자음 – Consonants (14)

한글 (Hangeul) 자음 – Consonants

2. The shapes of the consonants ㄱ[g/k], ㄴ[n], ㅁ[m], ㅅ[s], and ㅇ[ng] are graphical representations of the speech organs (tongue, lips, teeth, throat) used to pronounce each letter.

3. Other consonants were created by adding extra lines to the basic shapes.

4. The shapes of the vowels are based on the three elements – heaven ( ● ), earth (ㅡ), and man (ㅣ).

5. In modern Hangeul, the heavenly dot has mutated into a short line.

6. In Korean, consonants and vowels are combined to form syllable blocks.
