Por su 100 aniversario la asociación americana de ortodoncistasdiseño un eslogan donde aparece el mensaje: " ortodoncia 100 añosde sonrisas". Sin embargo una búsqueda en MEDLINE desde 1967hasta el presente de la palabra clave "ortodoncia" y "sonrisa" producesólo 23 artículos mientras que una búsqueda de las palabras clave"ortodoncia" y "perfil" rinde 153 artículos; tal vez el lema másapropiado podría haber sido: "ortodoncia un siglo de perfiles".

• Sonrisa Posada (Social):
Es voluntaria, no necesita ser inducida.
Es estática, puede mantenerse.
Es repetible
Puede existir dos tipos de sonrisa posada:
tensionada y relajada
• Sonrisa Espontánea (Placer):
Es involuntaria, (no obligatoria).
Es dinámica, no puede mantenerse.
Involucra todos los músculos de la expresión facial.
Es natural, expresa auténtica emoción humana.

Longitud y movilidad labial sup. son normales, la sonrisagingival con excesiva exhibición de dientes en reposo, sepuede atribuir exceso vertical maxilar (sonrisa esqueletalgingival)
Línea de labio baja que muestre poco diente en reposo,relacionado 1/3 inf. disminuido, es debido a deficienciavertical maxilar.
Mejor referencia para impactar o descender el maxilar,cantidad de incisivo que se muestra en reposo
