For my very good friend Peter Phillips. Peter and I have been friends for over 40 years. Peter was a prominent flyer up until Ill health got the better of him. After this, Peter and I came up with a plan to race young birds around the 2003 season as Peter was still capable of breeding pigeons and I was certainly keen to race them for him.

As the imported families were making their mark on the racing scene, Peter did his research and decided to buy the very best he could source at the time! No expense spared! These Van Loon / Jannsen based pigeons were carefully mated to meet the demands of a young bird training and racing program. Pairing at a set time of year, all youngster where weaned and placed on a Darkening system, fascilitating a faster and higher quality moult for each bird. The results speak for themsleves, setting new records in young birds! 10 x 1st VHA Feds, 7 x 2nd VHA Feds, 5 x 3rd VHA Feds and 1x1st VHA Fed Hay (15-08-09) and many other old bird fed placings from these young bird teams. All these positions were bred by Peter.

He is the most caring of breeders I have ever seen. These birds are hand cleaned every day, only the best offered, all sorts of carefully selected vitamins, grits and natural additives provided to a strict schedule. His attention to record keeping is impeccable as can be seen in his pedigrees. I am sure any flyer who buys these birds will have success with them! This sale marks the dispersal of an entire loft of stock birds that have been breeding birds at the top of competition in three Melbourne Federations for the last 10 years. Peter now finds it impossible to continue his life time involvement in the sport due to ill-health and reluctantly has to hang up the loft scrapper. I consider Peter to be one of the master breeders of racing pigeons. His endless time studying pedigrees, planning matings and purchases is methodical. He has directly produced 26 First Federation winners in the last 10 years for Les Fenton (VHA), Joe Phillips (VHA), John & Leanne Share (VRPU) and Frank DePasquale (VPO). Leanne’s 1st Fed Griffiths and 1st Fed Ouyen Van Loon cocks were both bred by Peter. His family is a select group of Van Loons originating from JoJo Lofts in Canada, Kees Bosua & Koopmans bred directly from Pioneer Lofts imports, Gaby Vandenabeeles from Jack VanderLinden and Heremans-Ceusters from Jack VanderLinden and Ponderosa Stud. Not only magnificent looking and handling pigeons that possess all the qualities fanciers should be aiming for in top racing pigeons, but whose pedigrees are solidly backed up by performance. After making many enquiries it was suggested I contact Peter Phillips. When I met Peter in 2010 several things struck me, first was the many pictures on his walls of Melbourne Federation winners, there must been at least twenty and I have no doubt there are many more winners from Melbourne and Country. The other thing was Peter knowledge and passion for his pigeons. Over the years he has purchased the very best of the different Van Loon blood lines. I was lucky enough to purchase ten Van Loons from Peter in 2011, which I kept as stock birds. The first season I raced with progeny off these pigeons was 2012, and I had success with two club wins. From 2012 till now, of the ten pigeons, four have produced winners. One hen GEEL 2010 3437 is now my best stock hen, producing winning birds every year since 2012, her progeny are also breeding winners. Peter has also gifted me several pigeons, they have also breed winners. In 2015 from Tintinara, the first winning bird into Geelong was bred from one of the gifted pigeons. The next two birds dropped together 5 mins later and could’ve also won the race. Both of these birds were bred down from GEEL 2010 3437 . I have made many friends through pigeon racing over the years since I first started as a junior with my Father, joining the Ashburton Homing Club in 1955. So I will mention just a few. I first met Joe Phillips mid 1960's and we have been great mates ever since. Many thanks Joe for everything you have done for me and for all you do for the love of our chosen sport. Jackie Stevens in helping me build my loft and for his generosity for the quality birds he gave me and many others entering our sport.

Jack Harrison, Ted Stanley, Tom Meehan, Jack Moody, and Ron Sheehan, we had great times together! Bill Bailey for the fun times we had both here and in Tassie. In recent years Les Fenton, John & Leanne Share became great friends and had success with my birds. Also Graeme Chapman from Geelong, Lindsay Brooks from Gippsland many thanks.
