INTRODUCTION

Objectives of the Module:

The E46/3 “Sport W agon”is being introduced to the U S m arket as a 2001 M odel Year vehi-cle. It joins the highly successful Sedan and C oupe m odels to further enhance the productline up and offer 3 series custom ers an alternative choice of vehicle.

U p to the “B”pillars, the Sport w agon is identical to the E46 sedan. The rear doors havebeen rem odeled for w agon usage and the tail gate is sim ilar to the E39 Sport W agon w ithan opening rear w indow .

The rear seats fold dow n to provide 1345 liters of cargo space. W ith the seats up, the rear

com partm ent provides 435 liters of load space.

The E46 Sport W agon is 7 m m longer that the sedan and the unloaded height is 6 m m

low er. The w heel base, w idth and turning radius are the sam e as the E46 sedan. The fol-low ing are the m axim um cargo capacity/ loads:

•435 Liters luggage capacity - w ith rear seat back up•1345 Liters luggage capacity - w ith back rest dow n•540KG in the rear•75 KG on the roof.

Pow er train and interior equipm ent are com parable to the E46 - 323 S edans and C oupes.The E46 Sport W agon is being introduced w ith the 2.5 liter 6 cylinder engine and Siem ensM S 42 engine m anagem ent system . The autom atic transm ission w ill be the G M 5-speed

From the front bum per up to the “B”pillar the E46 Sport W agon body is identical to thesedan. From the “B”pillar rearw ard, the body shell of the S port W agon is all new andincludes:

The structural rigidity and “structural dynam ic”characteristics introduced w ith the E46

sedan are carried over to the E46 Sport w agon. As w ith the sedan and coupe, the SportW agon body shell acts as the passenger’s safety cage along w ith the tubular im pact struc-tures for the front and rear bum per m ountings.

INTERIOR

U p to the “B”pillar, the interior equipm ent and trim level corresponds to the E46 sedan. Thefront seat options are the sam e as the E46 Sedan, w hile the rear seating area has beennew ly designed to provide an attractive package that offers optim um functionality and use-able space w hen the seats are folded dow n for cargo loading.

The rear seats backs are a 60/40 split w ith the center arm rest section on the left seat back.The center passenger’s inertia reel is m ounted to the left seat back, w hile the left/right rear

passenger’s belt reels are m ounted on the w heel housings. The low er section of the seatback is separate foam piece that enables the back rest pivot point to be higher on the seatback. This allow s the back rest to fold flat for m ore useable cargo loading space.

Center Arm Rest

The center arm rest incorporates the non-adjustable center head rest. The center arm restis folded dow n to gain access to the storage com partm ent and cup holders , w hich areintegrated into the rear of the head rest.

CARGO AREAStorage Compartments

Storage areas on the left and right in therear are used to house the rear w indoww asher fluid reservoir on the right and vari-ous sound system com ponents on the left.

Load Floor/SpareThe load floor is rem ovable to access the

spare tire and control m odule m ountingarea located beneath. A strap is provided tohold the load floor up w hile accessing thestorage area. The interior trim panel m ustalso be rem oved for access to the spareand control m odules.

Power Socket

A 12 Volt pow er socket is installed on theleft side of the cargo area behind the rearseat back.

TAIL GATE

The tail gate is sim ilar in design to the E39 Sport W agon, including the rear glass that ishinged separately and can be opened independently from the tail gate.

Rear Actuator

The actuator for the tailgate release is m ountedon the rear apron behind the trim panel. C ontrolof the actuator is a function of the G M - ZKEsystem .

TAIL GATE

Emergency Release

The tailgate does not feature a lock cylinder so an em ergency release m echanism is incor-porated into the tail gate latch. It allow s m echanical opening of the gate actuator in theevent of an electrical failure. The release is located along the low er edge of the rear apronbehind a sm all access cover. After rem oving the cover, the lever is pushed to the right tom echanically release the tail gate.

The rear apron of the E46 Sport W agon is low ered for easier loading/unloading. A plasticrubbing strip prevents the bum per from being scratched w hen cargo is beingloaded/unloaded.

REAR WINDOW

The Fram eless rear w indow is bonded to a m etal carrier w hich is hinged to the body. If therear w indow needs replacem ent, it is supplied w ith the glass bonded to the m etal carrier.

The release sw itch for opening the rear glass is incorporates into the rear w iper arm coverunder the triangle trim plate.

Rear Glass Hinge

The hinges are a new design (torsionalcoil spring) that are com pact in shape forspace saving reasons.

The rear w indow is adjusted through theslotted m ounted bolts. The gap of thew indow should be uniform on all sides.The height of the rear w indow is adjust-ed using shim s on the hinge m ounts.R efer to the repair m anual for com pleteadjustm ent procedures and sequence.

Rear Washer Nozzle

The rear w indow w asher spray nozzle, as w ell as the third brake light, is m ounted at the topleft side integrated into the spoiler.

BODY ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS

The E46 Sport W agon uses the body electronic system s from the E46 Sedan, Includingthe D river’s Inform ation System s and C entral B ody Electronics (ZKE V). C hanges have been

incorporated into the system s for specific S port W agon functions and features including:

•C ontrol of the rear tail gate/w indow latching and locking system .•C ontrol of the rear w indow w iper./w ashing system .•C hanges to the antenna configuration for the sound system .•The U IS interior sensor for the D W A system is m odified to suit the Sport W agon body.•The seat heating system is changed to the three stage heating control as in the 5 and 7series vehicles.

•The outside rear view m irrors are now incorporated into the seat m em ory system (sam eas the E46iC ).

CENTRAL LOCKING

ZKE CONTROL OF TAILGATE/WINDOW LATCHING SYSTEM

The tailgate can be opened from any of three input signals including:

•Rem otely from FZV•Interior tailgate release button - on left kick panel•U nlock sw itch pad - located above the license plate

Any of these input request signal the G M to activate the tailgate latch m otor. The G M w illalso sw itch on the interior lights w ith a unlock request for the tailgate.

The w indow is opened from the release sw itch located on the rear w iper arm cover.

Pressing the sw itch signals the G M to activate the rear w indow release relay.

REAR WIPER/WASH SYSTEM

The rear wiper/washer a funct ion of the ZKE system and fol lows the bas ic operat ional

seq uenc es o f the E39 S po rt Wagon ” w iper sys tem . The rear w iper motor and gear assem blyis mounted in the tai l gate through insulat ing bushing to prevent operat ion noises f rom beingtransmitted into the body’s interior.

The w iper pivot bearing, w iper shaft and w iper arm are m ounted on the rear w indow . Am echanical coupling is used to connect the tw o com ponents as on the E39 w agon.

REAR WIPER/WASH SYSTEM

Operation

O peration of the rear w iper/w asher is controlled from the w iper stalk sw itch on the steeringcolum n. The scope of operation is the sim ilar to the E39 w agon as follow s:

•IN TER M ITTEN T W IPE - Standard operation•PR O G RA M M ED IN TERM ITTEN T W IPE•C O N TIN U O U S W IPE•W ASH IN G C YC LE

Pressing the w iper stalk sw itch forw ard to the first detent activates the rear w iper in theinterm ittent m ode. The tim ed interval is approxim ately 7 seconds. The full sw eep and parkpositions of the w iper arm are recognized by tw o hall sensors on the m otor gear assem bly.If the w iper is sw itched O FF, the w iper arm w ill return to the park position.

Program m ing Procedure - for the w iping interval is as follow s:

•Briefly sw itch the w iper O N /O ff.•W ait the desired interval tim e.•Sw itch the w iper back O N again•The O FF tim e w ill be the program m ed interval - up to approxim ately 30 seconds.

Continuous wiping-is activated any tim e the transm ission is shifted into reverse. The rearw iping m odule receives the reverse signal from the LSZ for continuous w iping activation.

Rear window washing -is activated by pressing the stalk sw itch forw ard past the w ipingdetent. The w asher cycle is as follow s:

•W ash cycle 1 - w asher pum p is sw itched O N for 1.5 seconds. The w iper activation starts1 second later.

•W ash cycle 2 - w asher pum p is sw itched O N for .5 seconds - after a delay of of .8 sec-

onds. W iper continues to operate.

•W ash cycle 3 - w asher pum p is sw itched O N for .5 seconds - after a delay of .8 seconds.This is follow ed by tw o w ipe dry cycles.

NOTE: The w iper w ill rem ain in the interm ittent w iping m ode after w ashing until w iper issw itched off.

SOUND SYSTEM

Antenna Configuration

The sound system s available for the E46 S portW agon are the sam e as the system s installed inthe E46 S edan and C oupe. The follow ing anten-na layout is used for the Sport w agon body:•FM 1 - R ear w indow on the right side•FM 2 - R ear w indow in the center•FM 3 - Left rear side w indow•AM - R ear spoiler•FZV - C om bined w ith FM 2 antennaThe am plifier for FM 1 and FM 2 antennas islocated beneath the rear spoiler. The signal fromthe antennas passes from the am plifier to thediversity m odule located in the left side storagecom partm ent.

SOUND SYSTEM

Antenna Configuration

The FM 3 antenna has a separate am pli-fier that is integrated into the diversitym odule w hich is m ounted behind thestorage cover on the left side.

Diversity Switching

The FM 1/FM 2 am plifier can only send one FMsignal at a tim e. The diversity m odule controlsthe sw itching of the signals by applying a volt-age signal to the R F cable. W hen the voltagesignal is low , the am plifier sends the FM 1 sig-nal. W hen the voltage level is high, it sends the

FM 2 signal. The FM 1 and FM 2 inputs arecontinuously checked for the clearest signal.The diversity m odule then checks the signalfrom FM 1/FM 2 w ith the signal from FM 3. Theclearest of these signals w ill alw ays be sent tothe radio for FM reception.

FZV Antenna

The RF receiver module (315MHz) is integrated into the antenna amplifier.The receiver

has a separate KL 30 power supply for its operation. Signal from the FZV key are

processed by the module and sent to the GM for locking/unlocking functions over a ded-

icated line.

The rear speakers for the sound system are m ounted on the left and right w heel housingbehind the trim covers
