I could probably write pages about International Convention and what I’ve learned, but I’ve controlled myself and avoided the wrath of our Editor and picked out a few of the highlights. LCI Forward was officially launched in Chicago which is the roadmap that will launch Lions into the next century of service. You will, no doubt, have read all about the four elements by now as they are included in the new version of the Community Brochure that came with the last copy of the Lion Magazine. Along with this roadmap comes a new service framework that is intended to help all of us focus our service a little on the key challenges humanity faces today. All this builds into an aim that Lions Clubs International will be serving 200 million people per year by 2021. Only days after our return Lucia and I were catching up with our District Convention Planning Team to find out how things were progressing, trust me its looking good with talk of an Italian themed host night, a very different programme for the Saturday and a wonderful banquet on the Saturday evening, it’s on Friday 16th to Sunday 18th March 2018 at Clumber Park Hotel, put it in the diary’s and watch out for the booking forms appearing later in the autumn. The District Governor diary is starting to fill up nicely with a steady stream of Charter Anniversary invitations going in there, keep these coming along with invites to your fundraising and social events and requests for club visits. If we do face a little “fixture congestion” as the footballers say I have two very able Vice District Governors that are equally eager to come and visit you. Well... after very busy 10 days in Chicago, we are now fully ready for our year ahead. We metsome incredible people there and made some friends for life. The British team are strongand united.I have had a rethink about my chosen charity as I have been raising funds forDowns Syndrome myself for the last 2 years and will continue to do this through my familyand friends knitting flowers. I have found a very worthwhile charity run organisation called ‘School for Parents’ This isa local school based in Arnold. It is a Nottingham-based charity that helps babies andpre-school children with motor disorders or motor development delay. It is a place thatnurtures and develops the young disabled child and offers hope and support to the parent.I have personally visited this amazing place and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The early interventionprogrammes benefit young children with cerebral palsy, or other conditions caused by damage to the part of the brainthat controls movement. They also run specialist communication projects for children with Down’s syndrome, whorespond well to the structured sessions. They are a small local charity, who are reliant on voluntary donations to fundtheir incredible work. They need our help to give disabled children the best possible start in life, providing hope and alifeline for their parents too.Thank you in advance for supporting my charity and I will keep you updated on this.

Anything and Everything OldSouthwell Lions have staged theirfirst, but very successful, PhotographyCompetition with a central theme ofAnything and Everything Old.Whilst the entry level was slightlydisappointing the overall interestcreated was excellent. Photographswere displayed on the Gallery Wall atSouthwell Library and the responsewas brilliant. Members of the publicwere asked to vote for their favouritesand over 300 votes were recorded. Left - the winning picture in the maincategory was by Viv Johnson. It rather aptly shows the 800 year oldLacock Abbey, once the home ofWilliam Henry Fox Talbot whoproduced the first ever photographicnegative there in 1835

Second place went toMalcolm Yates for his shot ofthe Flying Scotsman pullingPullman Class coaches as itapproached the crossingsbetween Cromwell andNorwell - 25th February 2016

Delighted with the high standard of entries the Southwell Lions fully intend to run their second photo competition in 2018 andhope that in future years it will grow to add to the club’s resources to assist them in their work in the community.

The Train Naming was undertaken jointly by DG LionBalvinder Sokhi and Mark Coney, Head of Fleet Delivery forEast Midlands Trains.Mark Coney said: “I was asked if we might be able tocommemorate Lions Clubs International and their centennialcelebrations and thought what better way than to name oneof our trains. Our connection to the communities we serveright across the East Midlands is integral to everything wedo so we really wanted to recognise their positive work overso many years’.District Governor Lion Balvinder Sokhi said: “It’s a fantasticgesture to acknowledge our work in the community. It’s atrain that customers use every day so it will be great to seeit running up and down the network for all to see!”

Our very own train...

Thanks to the efforts of Lions in 105E EastMidlands Trains have recognised the Centenary ofLions Clubs by the naming of a locomotive. The chosen locomotive (a Meridian unit 222017) iscurrently being used for services on the mainlinebetween Sheffield / Nottingham and London St.Pancras. That means that the Lions Centenary Logowill be seen by thousands who use this busy route.

Lions form across the Districttravelled to Nottingham towitness the ceremony and joinin the celebration of the trainnaming. A spokesman for EastMidlands Trains said, ‘we’veteamed up with Lions ClubsInternational today [Friday 23June] to launch a train named inhonour of the great work they doin the local community’.

Clive Yates, Service Delivery Manager for East MidlandsTrains, is also serving his third term as President of The Valeof Belvoir Lions Club. He said: “This is a really specialmoment for me , as well as being a dedicated member of staff,I’ve also been active in Lions Club International for 32 years.

District Centennial Masked Ball

Hopefully these pictures will tell the whole story... In the magnificent surroundings of Stoke Rochford Hall the Lions of 105E revelled in a night of sheer delight. Colourful masks made the occasion a night to remember. It was a credit the District Centennial Committee who planned the event but particular thanks must go to Lion Theresa Walker for her organisation. It was a pleasure too to welcome fellow Lionsfrom our twinned District 105Nord in France.

What a great show at THE SHOW

The Lions exhibit featured a garden divided intofour sections with each section illustrating aparticular section of Lions involvement –Section 1, The ‘disaster’ area... featured sand, gravel, stones and driftwood.Section 2, The ‘water aid’ area... utilised a waterpump with vegetables, fruit and useful plants.Section 3 was a ‘sensory garden’ for the blind, with sweet smelling flowers and plants and‘feeling’ plants e.g. grasses, bamboo, pricklyshrubs and a walkway for people to walk through.Section 4 – the ‘community garden and youthgarden’, had an obelisk showing the youthactivities, community and environmentalprojects Lions are involved in. In this sectionthere were very brightly coloured plants andtrees that attracted bees and other insects.

105E Lions joined forces to put ona superb display at the LincolnshireShow. In our Centenary year theaim was do something different andcreate a display which not onlylooked good but also made thepublic more aware of the work ofLions Clubs... in fact it led PDG LionElaine Kitchen to comment, ‘If theLions don’t get noticed now, I don’tknow what we have to do to be ableto drop the title of ‘Best Kept Secret’

The garden area attracted a great deal of interest andmany of the visitors were keen to try their hand at winningthe P&O cruise tickets on offer in a competition. Around200 entries were completed . All the hard work was wellworthwhile when we saw people coming to our stand.”Centennial feather flag was slightly adjusted to say“Where there is a need there is a Lions helping hand”.‘The challenge now’ says Lion Elaine Kitchen ‘is to followthat in 2018’

Surrounding the garden was a picket fence with ‘helpinghands’. On the hands were the names of most of theClubs in the District and also a number of countrieswhere there are Lions. The Leos at Ormiston MaritimeAcademy spent time at school during their holiday todecorate all of the hands. The Centennial feather flagwas slightly adjusted to read “Where there is a needthere is a Lions helping hand”.

Oadby and Wigston BoroughCouncil and the Friends of PeaceMemorial Park have recognisedthe Lions Centenary by plantingup the central flower bed at thePark with the Lions badge. Sitednext to the park railings this willbe seen by the passers-by for thewhole summer.

Meanwhile in the same vein the Oadby & Wigston Lions werealso delighted to be able to help the Friends of Peace MemorialPark.New rose bushes were donated and planted to help to brightenup the memorial area...that’s two great examples of Lions being able to make their

Right Lion President Richard Darlaston, and Lion Vice President Jenny Fyfe help to look after the newly planted rose beds

BEDDING PLANTS... a new meaning ...

Mablethorpe Sutton and District Lions brought awhole new meaning to planting a bed of flowers...They literally did put their flowers into a bed. The Clubmade their presence felt at a recent event where theywanted to publicise the Lions 100th year... The pictureabove shows Lion Martin Brant and Lion PresidentColin Lambert with the BED.

Don’t let the weather ruin your day...

Despite the heavy rain, dark skies and waterlogged greens theScunthorpe Lions battled on with their recent Golf Day makingit another outstanding success...Around 150 players defied the wet conditions and finished theirrounds with great credit... The Club is grateful to all who helpedmake the day possible. This includes the Ashby Decoy Golf Cluband all those who undertook tasks on the day, not least of all theladies who survived the elements at the half way house wherewelcome refreshments were served.
