Situado entre el barrio antiguo y el nuevo de la

ciudad, el ayuntamiento ocupa una posición clave:

espada que separa lo antiguo de lo nuevo; piedra

angular de la nueva zona de Spui; extremo de un paseo que desemboca en la Estación Central; límite

norte de una nueva plaza cultural frente al Teatro de

la Danza. Sólo la localización del edificio, su

enorme, ineluctable masa, la ambición y compleji­

dad de su programa, le garantizan un lugar central en la ciudad.

Visto de frente, cuatro masas de torres surgen de la

base aligerándose progresivamente y finalmente

evaporándose.

Sobre un largo de 240 m. , el edificio se compone de

tres barras unidas entre ellas. Cada barra tiene un

ancho de 14 ,4 m. De cada una de estas tres bandas

iniciales, se originan tres siluetas verticales, diferen­tes, de volumen cambiante, conformando alzados

atípicos que evocan el perfil de una ciudad entera. Un trozo de periferia situado en el centro.

Situated between the old and new areas of the city, the City Hall occupies a key position: the sword which separates the old and the new; angular stone of the new area of Spui; boundary of a new promenade which comes out at Central Station; horthem limit of a new cultural square in front of the Dance Theatre. Only the positioning of the building, its enormous, ineluctable mass, the ambition and the complexity of its programme, grant it a central place in the city. Seen head on, four masses of towers rise from the base, becoming progressively slighter and finally evaporating. With a length of 240 m. the building is made up of three bars joined to each other. Each bar is 14.4 m. thick. From these three initial strips originate three different vertical silhouettes, of changing volume, shaping atypical elevations which evoke the profile of an entire city. A piece of periphery placed in the centre.
