PUBLIC SERVICE STUDENTS FLYING HIGH WITH THE RAFSince 2014, our Public Service students have worked closely with the RAF to raise more than £4,000 for local children’s hospitals. We featured in “100 Years of the RAF”, a book supporting the RAF 100 appeal. And an RAF Griffin helicopter from 60 Squadron Defence flying school even dropped into our Cheadle campus to say thanks!
Fancy coming face-to-face with a leopard? Our students did during a two-week safari to South Africa, where they stayed at the Balule Kruger National Park and Sodwana Bay, near the Mozambique border. Many even managed to secure PADI diving qualifications during the trip, which was open to any student interested in conservation.
EXPLORINGSOUTHAFRICA
MOUNTAINTREKKING IN PERUA group of students spent summer 2018 researching forest sustainability and climate change in the Amazon jungle in Peru. During the two-week expedition, the students were based on research ships in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, venturing ashore to help with biodiversity surveys and to complete an Amazonian wildlife and conservation course.
GETTING A TASTEFOR THE BIG APPLESipping coffee in Times Square, strolling along Broadway, relaxing in Central Park and taking the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty – just some of the things our Business and Law students did during a visit to New York in March 2018, the eighth time students from the course have beento the Big Apple.

HANNAH (studying History,
English Literature,
and Spanish A levels,
plus the Extended
Project Qualification)
8:40AM – Arrive at college, catch up with friends and get ready for the day ahead.
9AM – English Lit is the day’s first class. We’re currently reading A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. Our teacher brings it all to life brilliantly.
10.30AM – A short break means there’s just enough time to grab a quick coffee from the refectory.
10.40AM – My Extended Project is about the history of radio and I’m halfway through the research. Today I’m meeting my Academic Excellence teacher to go over my progress. We decide to narrow my focus even further, concentrating on radio during World War II and pirate radio in the 1960s. It’s challenging, but it will prepare me well for university.
12.10PM – After a busy morning, lunchtime is the perfect chance to relax with friends.
12.50PM – The afternoon starts with a History class, which I really enjoy. One of the textbooks we’re using was written by our teacher. We’re looking at the Russian Revolution of 1917, and I’m hoping to go on the History trip to St Petersburg next year.
2.20PM – A free lesson gives me the chance to go home and get started on some Spanish work that needs doing for tomorrow.
COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS: I’ve been lucky to go on several trips. We’ve visited Haworth for our English Literature class, been to the Spanish Film Festival in Manchester, and done a week’s work experience on an archaeological dig.
AMBITIONS: This year I’ve been part of the Oxbridge Programme. I’m hoping to go on to read History and Spanish at Mansfield College, Oxford.
