Brook has been in the Top Spots for her agility titles & is an avid tracker. She finished her championship with multiple BOB's from the classes.

She is line bred from champions with biddable temperaments and active minds. Her litter sister, Ch. London's Foggy Mist CDX RE CC,

was number 1 in Top Spots for her novice and open obedience titles.

Gabe was carefully selected as sire because his illustrious pedigree complements Brook’s pedigree. His accomplishments include:

Let’s dissect the key question first – AKC Registration.

The AKC runs a registry, a studbook, which documents parentage and pedigrees. An entry in that registry documents a specific breed, sire and dam. And that is really it! Oh yes, of course other information such as breeder, owner, date of birth, coat color, and a host of other data are collected, but the key elements are BREED, SIRE and DAM.

If one knows (or can prove) the Breed, Sire and Dam, the dog is registered or register-able. Period. End of story.

What about the LUAs then? Do we know the Breed, Sire and Dam of the dogs to be registered? UNEQUIVOCALLY and emphatically YES!

From the first cross done with a Pointer, through generations of backcrosses using Dalmatians, to current day matings done with LUA Dalmatians, every single LUA dog has a proven pedigree –

100% correct documentation of Sire and Dam.

How can I say that? Was the record keeping really accurate over 35 years? YES! In fact, using sophisticated molecular genetics and DNA testing techniques, Dr. Danika Bannasch demonstrated 100% accuracy to the pedigrees (name of dog, sire and dam) for every single one of the LUAs that she tested. So the bottom line is that the LUA Dalmatian pedigrees are proven beyond a shadow of a doubt – even to a level that exceeds modern day registered Dalmatians – to be error free.

What about Breed? After 12 generations of backcrossing to Dalmatians, and after extensive DNA testing, the LUA Dalmatians are proven to within a high degree of scientific confidence to be 99.998% Dalmatian. The percentage is even higher with current day 14th generation LUA Dalmatians. Anyone who has had their

hands on these dogs can say beyond any shadow of any doubt, “they look like a duck, they walk like a duck, & they quack like a duck – so they must be a duck” – er, Dalmatian that is.

So, we know the Sire, we know the Dam and we know the Breed for each one of the LUA Dalmatians. Should they be registered? YES, YES, YES!

Now a whole host of other questions surround the LUA Dalmatians. Naysayers use them to support their position, but all they really do is raise unfounded smoke and mirror doubts. For example, “No one knows whether the LUA Dalmatians will have less <clinically evident> stone disease”. Huh? Current day AKC registered Dalmatians produce uric acid stones at a rate 9 times higher than the general canine population, and the vast majority of those stones are urate / uric acid related. If you take away the urates,

you cannot make urate / uric acid stones. No bricks – no brick house. No urates – no urate stones. Period.

Or, “Stone disease is really no longer a problem in Dalmatians. It affects 1% or less of the population.” Huh? Registry after registry documents a high predilection for Dalmatians to form urate stones. The DCA’s own health survey (DCAF – Bartges) showed a rate 10 times higher than the general canine population, and approaching 20% or higher amongst male Dalmatians. The Canine Health Foundation supported study done by Dr. Dorn showed a 9 times higher rate in Dalmatians. Don’t believe these results? Call your local vet and ask about urate stones in Dalmatians. I’ll bet they give you a litany of patients and experiences.

Indeed, for almost two decades a primary role of the DCA Health committee was to promote information about the occurrence,

treatment and prevention of stone disease in the Dalmatian. Common sense here; if this weren’t a significant problem in the breed, why on earth would so much time, energy and financial resource be devoted to it?

And, “their spots are horrible”. Huh? Have you had your hands on the current day LUAs? Or, with all due respect, have you looked at our current day AKC registered Dalmatians? On the whole, in my opinion, the breed has a real problem with spotting patterns. They have gotten way too big – larger than the size of a half dollar – way too intermingled looking like giant splotches of color, not “spots”, and way too indistinct like “torn patches” of color.

The spot size and character of the current LUAs are much more correct in size and color. They may actually help the breed in this regard! But then, I have had my hands on the

by Irvin B. Krukenkamp, MD, MS, FACS, FAHA

his question has bedeviled

the purebred Dalmatian

community for decades.

After nearly a year of debate

on it at the AKC Board level,

the question was kicked back

to the DCA parent club to

conduct a vote of its members

on the issue.

That vote is scheduled for this

June 2011, or thereabouts.

What side will you take?

How will you vote?

Based on what information?

How will I vote?

YES – Register them.

Why?

Read on.

TTo Register, or Not to Register: That is the QuestionLUA Dalmatian Facts and Fiction

dogs, photographed and filmed them, and studied them intently. Most of the outspoken naysayers cannot credibly make the same claim.

Or, “if we allow the LUAs into the breeding programs, we will bring in those ‘Pointer’ diseases”. What Pointer diseases? As far as I can tell from research of Pointers, Health Registries and reports, the Pointers – unlike the Dalmatians – do not have any distinct health problem otherwise rare in the general canine population. Besides, and with all due respect, it is genetically and scientifically impossible to point to a single ancestor as the source of a health problem when all members of the genus – canine – share that problem. Said another way, if a LUA develops thyroid disease for example, and that is a known problem in all other breeds, how on earth can one point to the Pointer (pun intended) as the source and not the hundreds of Dalmatians in the pedigree? Answer – you can’t!

Finally, and this is the one that is really outrageous – “Well Dr. Schaible had horrible dogs. We don’t want to bring that into the general Dal population”. Double Huh Huh?? My goodness, have any one of you every sat ringside at a dog show? I have. In fact, I have personally attended several hundred – that’s right, hundred

– National Specialties spanning dozens of breeds over the last several years. Know what? Every single one of the breeds has exhibitors/owners/handlers who rip the dogs to shreds ringside, pledge to never breed to that “awful line” and bemoan those horrible dogs bred by so-and-so. Get over it! It is meaningless chatter.

So what is the bottom line here? The LUAs are Dalmatians, simple as that. The AKC should register them as Dalmatians because they have met, and indeed far exceeded, any documentation requirement for Breed, Sire and Dam of any registry any where in the world! Their pedigrees are 100% accurate, and their Breed – Dalmatian – has been proven scientifically through DNA testing that far exceeds any other purebred dog!

Will the LUAs prove to be “the cure” for urate stone disease? With a high degree of confidence, YES! Why? It is simple. You just can’t make urate stones without the urates. You don’t believe me? Well look at over 150 other breeds with normal urinary uric acid levels for proof. How is it that 150 other breeds do not have a problem with uric acid stones and obstructions? Simple answer – they don’t have the urates!

Do I have to breed these dogs? NO, of course not. You can make your breeding choices just like any other breeder. Don’t like “those awful dogs”? Don’t like their spots? Don’t like their breeder? Fine, no problem. Don’t get involved. Don’t breed to them.

BUT, and this is my final comment, don’t DENY the opportunity of others to breed them, show them, and to develop their breeding programs using them. Please, let common sense prevail. Register the dogs and move on. It is time to put this issue to rest.

The Duke Basketball program under Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K) is one of the best in the country. Coach K has built a legacy of success; taking good players and creating great teams that have gone on to win multiple conference, tournament and national titles. The banners recognizing these accomplishments hang proudly from the rafters at Cameron Stadium. Along with the success of the program on the court, Duke has attained the highest graduation rate of the #1 seeds in the j2010 NCAA tournament. 92% of Duke’s players complete their college educations, a rarity in a sport where increasingly “one and done” is the order of the day.

And as a result, everyone hates Duke. The reasons are as wide and varied as you might expect. They are a private school, so of course they have more financial resources to throw at the program. They get all the breaks from the ref’s - everyone “knows” the fouls fall their way. When they won the NCAA tournament it was because they had an easier bracket. Never once do their detractors acknowledge that perhaps it was the combination of talent, coaching, and the day in and day out dedication and hard work required to excel.

Sound familiar?

I remember when we first got started in dogs. There was a dog that was being shown in our area. The dogwas just starting his show career, was exhibited by a top handler and was well on his way to setting multiple records in the breed. The dog was a very good dog, of excellent breed type, with a strong presence - a real showman in the ring. But if you listened to the

commentary outside the ring, you would have thought that the dog was nothing more than average – and that was on a good day. Certainly with all of those faults and that undesirable temperament the only reason the dog could be winning is because of the handler, the ads, the politics - you name it. It could never be because it was a good dog.

It makes me wonder where the saying “Everyone loves an winner” came from. Because clearly we don’t like winners who consistently win.

What we DO like is the underdog.

One of my most memorable moments in dogs occurred after we had been in the breed for just a few years. I had my first show dog, a bitch, and she was slow to come along. I was the person in the local group most deserving of the “Reserve Queen” tee shirt. The person everyone loved to see show up at the dog show, because odds were quite good that I wasn’t going to win. And then the day came - a certain judge known for his tendency to fall in love - fell in love with my bitch - and she won a 5 point major at a specialty. Everyone cheered for us. I was the underdog, the long shot no one expected to win and the tears running down my cheeks as I accepted my winners ribbon and trophy were the undeniable evidence of that fact.

I know what you might be thinking. Yes, it is easier to like the underdog. They have not developed an ego about winning - after all they have no experience with it. They are a bumbling mass of humility and pure joy, and quite frankly if we are honest

with ourselves they remind us of ourselves when we started out in the sport.

Success can be heady stuff and when it goes bad, it can be ugly.

We all know the person who assumes that for whatever reason - length of time in the breed, past wins, local stature - you name it, they should be the rightful heir to the awards on that day – and that day happens to be every day. And, when for whatever reason, the judge finds a dog they like better and the ribbons go another way the venom spews forth. The judge must be an idiot. Who would want to win under this judge! The other competitor had “an in”. After all, how could that pig have beaten my dog? In the extreme, this person might feel it necessary to explain all of this to the person who in fact did win - either directly or indirectly. Isn’t social networking a wonderful thing!

You might also recognize this person - the one that goes to the dog show - but can only remember when it comes time to post results - the win that their dog achieved. They were too excited, didn’t have a catalog - you name it. The excuses go on. No matter that these are the same dogs they compete against weekend in and weekend out. They can recite line and verse every fault of these dogs, and every bad dog contained in the pedigrees of these dogs, but for some reason they can never seem to remember when these dogs win.

It is hard to like these people.

When you are at the top of your game, you become the benchmark for others. After the NCAA Championship win in 2010, Duke

headed into the 2011 season with a Number 1 ranking. Someone may as well have painted a target on their backs. Every team that faced Duke on the court this season brought their A game. A win against Duke meant bragging rights and in order for Duke to defend its position they had to be on top of their game every time they stepped onto the court. That is the price of being at the top.

It is no different in dogs. Anyone who has ever campaigned a top dog knows that it is an all-encompassing endeavor. If there is a dog show somewhere, you need to be there. These dogs often travel longer distances, are shown more frequently and are expected to take it all in stride. We expect these dogs to be perfect. And every time they step into the ring we scrutinize their every move. At the same time, every other exhibitor’s private goal is to knock off the big dog. How many times have you heard someone brag about their big win over “Top Specials”? It comes with the territory.

One of the things that Mike Krzyzewski does as part of the conditioning of his team is to pack the toughest competition he can find into the season. Duke typically plays a full schedule, with a healthy dose of out of conference games often cutting short the amount of downtime between games. The more aggressive schedule and tougher competition provide an excellent benchmark for the team. They get a much better idea of the true strength of their offense and defense, enabling them to focus on the areas of the game that need improvement. Competition makes their game stronger.

The same can certainly be said about

the sport of dogs. Relative quality has the ability to elevate or place a drag on the overall quality of a breed. When overall quality is high and competition is tough, breeders are successful only if they breed better quality dogs that are well conditioned and trained for the show ring. This bodes well for the breed. With better quality dogs to select from, the gene pool is strengthened, and the resulting offspring should continue to be an improvement on their sire and dam. When overall quality is not as strong and competition is less intense it is obviously easier to win. If a breeder is not diligent, standards slide, and dogs that would otherwise not be candidates for a breeding program end up in the gene pool and the gradual downward trend continues. How many times have you heard a breeder say “This dog is no worse than what is out in the ring showing now.”

Competition is good for the sport of dogs. It makes us better handlers and better breeders, and hopefully better competitors. In our early years in dogs one of my favorite parts of the national specialty was the hospitality room, which contained a photographic display of all of the past winners. I would look at those pictures and at those special dogs and hope that some day my dogs would be a part of that display. It gave me something to aspire to while I got my hind end kicked to kingdom come each weekend at the dog show. Over time we have had the good fortune of making our way onto that display. And we have a much better understanding of what it takes to be at the top of your game.

We live in North Carolina in an area otherwise known as the Ground Zero of College Basketball. With 4 Division 1 teams within 50 miles of each other, and home to what is considered to be the greatest rivalry in the NCAA - Duke and UNC, the Triangle is College Basketball. When you move to a new area, you pick a place to live, schools for your kids, and a doctor, a dentist and possibly a church. When you move to Carolina, you also pick a basketball team. ....We picked Duke.

Dalmatian Christmas Ornaments For SaleI have been collecting Dalmatian-themed Christmas ornaments for MANY years and over the past years have chosen not to have a Christmas tree, so these lovely ornaments have remained in the attic.

I have decided to share them with any who would like to purchase them. I MIGHT be able to arrange transportation to the DCA National for any orders. The ornaments are in several groupings with the price attached to each. I am willing to negotiate price on most of them (but not all) if you want to purchase a large quantity.

Just let me know if you need a more detailed description of any of the ornaments. Some are porcelain, some are material; some are metal; some are wooden, some are composite material and some are plastic.

When the entries arrive you

find that your dog is on at

8am Sat and 1pm Sunday.

Like 90% of Dog Show

exhibitors you are at least

100 miles from the show. So

you’ll either pay for an extra

night’s hotel room or you’ll

be leaving at 3:30am.

The long drive is uneventful

and you make it to the show

site on time. You search

for a space, dragging your

stuff, up and down aisles

until you find a tiny space

about as far as you can get

from your ring and still be in

the same building.

You set up your stuff, start

the grooming of your dog

and when the time arrives

you head to the ring. As

the moment approaches for

you to enter the ring your

stomach starts to flutter.

Even a novice person will

tell you nervousness travels

down the leash. You try to

calm your nerves, practice

your breathing and focus

on the job ahead. You size

up the competition and tell

yourself you have the best

dog because let’s face it;

every owner believes they

have the best dog and every

other entry is inferior.

The entire judging of your

breed could take from 10 to

40 minutes and except for 1

exhibitor you are then done

for the day.

It’s 8:10 and your dog didn’t

win. Now you’re totally

aggravated, you traveled all

this way and you think the

judge was an idiot because

he didn’t like your dog. If

you should win the breed

it’s now 8:10, groups start

at 2pm and you are the last

group. One way or the other

it’s going to be a long day at

the dog show.

Now for the professional

handler, traveling is part

of their job. They have the

network to ensure they have

the best locations. They have

the assistants to help with

dogs. They deal with all the

hassle. For the professional

handle there is no emotional

investment in the dog they

are showing. After all win or

lose they get paid.

I have seen some owner

handlers do an amazing

job showing their dogs, but

there are many owners who

no matter how much they

practice can’t show their

dogs well.

Now some people

might complain that the

professional handler has a

political advantage, which

occasionally might be true,

but the reality is they win

because they consistently

do a great job presenting a

dog.

You might think that hiring

a professional handler is

expensive but think back to

the 2 nights in the hotel,

meals, gas and the hours

spent waiting to go into the

ring, and after all for most of

us time is money.

Showing a dog well is a

talent and when you see a

dog well presented it takes

your breath away.

I have finished dogs both

ways. No matter which way

you choose to take part in

the dog show experience

one thing doesn’t change;

the flutter in your stomach as

the moment approaches for

your dog to enter the ring is

always there.

Owner VsProfessional HandlerBy Karen McNamara

ou work all week looking forward to the dog show on the weekend. Your mind is full of the logistics in getting to the show site. Your house stinks of cooked liver. There are a half a dozen damp towels needing to be washed. But your dog looks great and visions of purple ribbons are dancing in your head.
