East/West RouteWESTERN AUSTRALIAN AIRWAYS

The initial development of commercial airmail routes was intimately connected with theestablishment and maintenance of the Royal Australian Air Force. The 3d airmail charge was tohelp fund the RAAF. All pilots and mechanics of airlines carrying subsidised airmails were requiredto be members of the RAAF Reserve and, like the Navy, the Airforce was able to requisition civilaircraft in time of war.
