PINWHEEL BLOCK1. Half-Square Triangles (HST): Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) H 3” square. Place marked H square, right sides together, onto (1) E 3” square. Sew 1/4” away from both sides of the drawn line. Cut along drawn line to yield (2) HST units. Trim units to measure 2-1/2” square. Make (4).

    2. Noting position of HST Units, sew together (2) pairs and then sew one row on top of the other to make a Pinwheel Center.

    3. Sew (2) H 1” x 4-1/2” rectangles to the left and right sides of a Pinwheel Center, followed by (2) H 1” x 5-1/2” rectangles to the top and bottom of Pinwheel Center. 4. Repeat Step 3 using (2) E 1” x 5-1/2” rectangles for the sides and (2) E 1” x 6-1/2” rectangles for the top and bottom. Unit measures 6-1/2” square unfinished.

Sew 1/4” away from both sides of drawn line. Cut along drawn line.

    5. Similar to Step 1, place (1) marked E 2-1/2” square, right sides together, at the top right corner of (1) K 2-1/2” x 3-1/2” rectangle. Sew on drawn line and trim 1/4” away from sewn line. Open and press to reveal E corner triangle, as shown. Repeat steps to make a mirror-imaged unit using (1) marked I 2-1/2” square and (1) K 2-1/2” x 3-1/2” rectangle. Make (2) each.6. Noting rotation of pieces, sew together an E/K and I/K unit to make a pieced unit. Make (2) and add to the left and right sides of unit made in Step 4, as shown.

    7. Follow Step 5 using (1) marked E 2-1/2” square. Place E square, right sides together, at the top left corner of (1) K 2-1/2” x 5-1/2” rectangle. Repeat with another E square at the bottom right corner of the same K rectangle to complete pieced unit.8. Make a mirror-imaged unit using (1) marked E 2-1/2” square, (1) marked I 2-1/2” square and (1) K 2-1/2” x 5-1/2” rectangle. 9. Noting rotation of pieces, sew together both E/K and E/I/K units along the short ends to make a pieced unit. Make (2) and sew to the top and bottom of unit made in Step 6, as shown, to complete a Pinwheel Block. See diagram for placement of units.
