In urban environments, light promotes public life at night. In addition to the need for safety and security, nighttime illumination also fulfils cultural and commercial purposes. Companies and institutions for example, strikingly display their facades with light. In this way, people are provided with orien tation and simultaneously the architecture is attractively presented within its urban space. Some buildings thus establish themselves as landmarks in the nocturnal scene of towns and cities. Functional architecture such as bridges and railway stations can also adopt this role. In addition, they act as central hubs, making the city accessible on foot. With the right light, plazas and squares become popular places to meet and socialise,

both for residents and tourists. Light for routes and paths also makes it possible to create attractive connections between buildings and squares. For all such locations, sustainable lighting solutions and effective lighting technology are decisive for durable and efficient operation. Equally important is ecologically exemplary lighting. Create attractive places with a high quality visitor experience with the sensitive use of light in outdoor areas. Robust lighting tools from ERCO with precise lighting technology ensure longterm and futureproof investments. In this way we bring the needs of people and the environment into harmony at night.

Lighting trees perfectlyExciting projects

In landscape architecture, trees are important elements for designing spaces and enabling orientation. If properly lit they can also perform these tasks at night. Illuminated trees form visual axes in the dark and convey a sense of security. Because the shape and size of the tree crown varies according to the type of tree and season of the year, choosing the right lighting tool is not always simple. We offer helpful tips for the lighting design, and show you how to impressively illuminate various types of trees and palms.

Projectors and floodlights as well as ground recessed luminaires are suitable for lighting trees. Projectors and floodlights can be flexibly positioned with a ground stake while the lumi naires remain visible. Groundrecessed luminaires on the other hand are inconspicuously integrated into the ground. If fitted with appropriate mounting enclosures vehicles can even roll over them.

ERCO lighting tools feature up to seven light distributions. Narrow light distributions such as narrow spot (approx. 8°) are ideal for accentuating. Wide distributions such as wide flood (approx. 50°) are used for large area lighting. This allows large tree crowns to be highlighted even at short lighting distances.

Select the light distribution matching the shape of tree

Think about the environment

Which luminaire is the right one?

Decide on a suitable luminaire position

Plan with weather resistant luminaires

For illuminating a tree crown in a planar fashion, it is advisable to use three luminaires around the tree. This makes the tree appear particularly striking from a distance. If on the other hand the crown of the tree is to be illuminated from below or the trunk is to be accentuated, it is advisable to position the luminaire close to and below the crown.

For uniform floodlighting of trees, projectors with an inclination angle of approx. 30° with three floodlights at 120° intervals around the tree is ideal.

Tip:To illuminate a tree crown with a diameter of 5m from a distance of 5m, a projector with 12 watt LED module and wide flood (approx. 50°) light distribution is suitable.

Further lighting methods and planning aids can be found on the web at www.erco.com/outdoortrees

ERCO luminaires have panandtilt mounting to ensure that light only reaches where it is needed. Precise light beams direct the light crisply onto the target surface. Our outdoor luminaires are also dimmable to ensure responsibility towards the environment. Depending on the ambient brightness, even low illuminance levels of approx. 50lx are sufficient for a tree to appear bright.

Outdoor luminaires need to withstand wind and adverse weather. A high protection rating is therefore required. All ERCO outdoor luminaires have at least an IP65 protection rating. This means they are dustproof and protected against jets of water from all directions. Groundrecessed luminaires have an IP68 protection rating. This means these luminaires are also protected against the consequences of continuous immersion in water.

Selecting the right luminaire for any distanceA short lighting distance to the tree requires very wide light distribution. With increasing distance, a narrower light distribution is necessary to avoid spill light outside the tree crown. ERCO offers various, partly interchangeable, light distributions and wattages for this purpose.

Lighting facades perfectlyExciting projects

In urban environments, light promotes public life at night. Cultural institutions, shops and businesses benefit from a lively nightlife. Impressive facade lighting makes buildings visible in the urban space and enables orientation. The uniform illumination of facades serves to emphasise landmarks and gives them a calm presence in the urban space. Light accents on the other hand structure large surfaces and highlight architectural details such as columns and cornices. Grazing light wallwashing is ideal with facades for highlighting the fine textures of timber and natural stone to create striking reliefs. To avoid light pollution, good glare control and precise photometrics are important factors when selecting luminaires. We give you tips on how to strikingly illuminate facades in unison with the needs of both people and the environment.

How to uniformly illuminate a complete facade

Correct use of light colours and contrasts

From accenting to floodlighting: Select the right light distribution

Model the structure of the facade with grazing light

Pay attention to the correct handling of light

ERCO offers luminaires for outdoor applications with up to seven different light distributions. Selection ranges from very narrow to wide light distributions. In this way a wide variety of lighting concepts can be implemented: From the precise accentuation of small facade details with narrow light distributions to the uniform floodlighting of large buildings.

Wallwashing illuminates facades uniformly and emphasises the overall dimensions of the architecture. A major advantage in the design of urban spaces is that a vertical surface creates a high impression of brightness even with low illuminance. For efficient wallwashing with large spacing between luminaires, ERCO features specialised luminaires with wallwash light distribution in many of its product ranges.

Another method of wallwashing is grazing light. The light hitting the facade at a very shallow angle emphasises the structure of the facade's surface. Grazing light is particularly effective on historical facades with structured surfaces and reliefs. Facade luminaires and groundrecessed luminaires are ideal for this purpose.

Different light colours enhance the nuanced nature of materials. Warm light colours such as 3000K are suitable for warmtoned construction materials such as wood, whilst cooler light colours such as 4000K are more suitable for cooler surface colours such as exposed concrete. Different levels of illuminance also support differentiation of the facade elements. To render accents visible we recommend a brightness ratio to the general lighting of 1:5 to 1:10.

Sustainable lighting solutions and ecologically exemplary applications are important in outdoor areas. ERCO luminaires make a significant contribution to this thanks to precise optics and excellent glare control. To completely avoid light pollution, we recommend that you ensure luminaires are correctly aligned so that no light shines into the sky. The right brightness also helps to protect the environment. This is why our luminaires for outdoor applications are dimmable.

Durable luminaires for lowmaintenance operation

Ground, building or mast

ERCO offers various types of luminaire that illuminate facades from below, above, near or far. Groundrecessed luminaires are a very elegant solution for illuminating facades from the ground. Facade luminaires on the other hand function as a discreet design element on the building and create a magical form of grazing light. Projectors, floodlights and wallwashers can be mounted in almost any location: on the ground, on the facade, on bollards and on high masts.

Wallwashers create a very uniform distribution of light on the facade and make it appear flat. The distance to the wall should be about one third of the facade height for this purpose. This results in an inclination angle of approx. 55°. For good longitudinal uniformity, the spacing between luminaires can be up to 1.2 times the distance to the wall.

Tip: With a wide arrangement of 1:1.25 we recommend wallwashers with a 48 watt LED module to uniformly illuminate a facade with a height of 12m from a distance of 4m with approx. 50lx.

Wallwashing for small to large facades

For a standard LED module with a failure rate of 0.2% of LED modules per 1,000h, with 50 luminaires installed, the failure of two luminaires after only 20,000h must be expected.

ERCO LED lighting after 20,000h

Comparing an ERCO highpower LED with a stand ard LED demonstrates the positive effect of high performance LEDs on investment costs. ERCO LEDs feature a failure rate of 0.1% at up to 50,000 hours of operation. Several LEDs are installed in one ERCO LED module. This means that ERCO luminaires continue to operate without problems after 20,000 hours.

Lighting paths perfectlyExciting projects

Paths connect places. When dusk falls, light without glare makes paths safe and provides orientation. Successful path lighting is charac terised by the fact that it fulfils design tasks as well as functional needs. In this way, paths naturally extend a warm welcome to a museum, office building or hotel. There are various ways to illuminate paths in public spaces or private gardens attractively and efficiently. We give you helpful tips on which luminaires perform these lighting tasks most effectively in outdoor areas.

These light distributions are ideal

Which luminaire is the right one?

Dark Sky technology

Bollard luminaires are particularly suitable for illuminating footpaths. They can be positioned at the edge of the path and enable elegant guidance. Facade luminaires can be useful for paths close to buildings. They illuminate the path from their mounting positions on walls or buildings. Recessed luminaires and surface mounted luminaires for outdoor applications are also used for covered walkways.

ERCO has perfected Dark Sky technology for its bollard luminaires. Light pollution is prevented because no light is emitted above the horizontal plane. In addition, glare to passersby and drivers is avoided.

For paths, luminaires are available with narrow and wide light distributions. Round bollard luminaires are also available with 180° distribution for paths or 360° distribution for large open areas. For efficient, uniform lighting along paths, we recommend luminaires with wide beam 180° distribution. The large luminaire spacing also has a positive effect on investment costs.

Luminaires in public spaces or private gardens need to withstand wind and adverse weather. A high protection rating is therefore needed. All ERCO luminaires for outdoor use have at least an IP65 protection rating. This means they are dustproof and protected against jets of water from all directions.

A horizontal illuminance of 0.6 to 5lx is recommended for good path recognition. This reference value corresponds to the EN 132011 standard used in Europe. ERCO bollard luminaires are designed to achieve at least 1lx at a luminaire spacing of up to 10 metres. The softly diminishing light beam also ensures that passersby are not subjected to any unpleasantly harsh brightness contrasts.

Select a warm light colour, e.g. 2700K to 3500K, if paths have warm material colours such as wood or sandstone you wish to accentuate. A neutral white light colour of 4000K on the other hand is suitable for cool material colours such as grey granite.

180° distribution is suitable for illuminating paths. Bollard luminaires with 180° distribution (h ≥ 800 mm) enable uniform path lighting with luminaire spacing of up to 8m and 12 watt consumption. 360° distribution is ideal for illuminating forks in paths or open spaces. The distances between two bollard luminaires (h ≥ 800 mm) with 24 watt LED modules can be up to 10m. Other distances can be selected for visual orientation.

Which luminaire is the right one?

How brightly should works of art be illuminated in outdoor spaces?

Projectors and floodlights as well as ground recessed luminaires are suitable for lighting art installed in outdoor spaces. Floodlights and projectors can be flexibly positioned on walls or masts, but also on the ground using a ground stake. Groundrecessed luminaires on the other hand are fixed but inconspicuously integrated into the ground. They can be walked over by visitors, and vehicles can also drive over them if they are fitted with appropriate mounting enclosures.

Accent lighting outside creates appealing points of interest. The contrast in brightness to the surroundings emphasises the presence of the exhibits. A ratio of 1:5 to 1:10 is recommended as a contrast between the surroundings and the exhibit. If a museum facade in the background has an illuminance of 50lx, the exhibit in the foreground should have around 250lx for accenting purposes.

Lighting art in outdoor spaces perfectlyWhat you should know

Accent lighting strikingly and impressively models sculptures. For illumination from three sides, an arrangement (β) with luminaires each offset by 120° is suitable. For a nuanced lighting level, a distinction is made between main light, fillin light and back light.Arrangement: α = 30°, ß = 120°

Tip: To illuminate an approx. 2m large sculpture installed on a pedestal from a distance of 8m with >50lx, a projector with 6W LED module and spot light distribution (approx. 15°) is needed.

Further lighting methods and planning aids can be found on the web at www.erco.com/outdoorart

How to impressively display your art

Select precisely alignable luminaires

Correct use of light colours Design with weather resistant luminaires

Correct alignment of the light beam onto the exhibit is crucial for high visual comfort. For this reason projectors and floodlights have panandtilt adjustment. An adjustment aid on the housing makes it possible to identically align several projectors and floodlights. Groundrecessed luminaires, as directional spotlights, also feature panandtilt alignment for precise, impressive lighting.

The colour of light has a significant influence on the perception of art. Warm light colours such as 3000K are suitable for warmtoned materials such as wood, whilst cool light colours such as 4000K are better for surfaces with a cooler feel, such as steel and aluminium. Using coloured light from RGBW luminaires, the surroundings can be designed and transformed with either subtle or dramatic contrasts.

All ERCO outdoor luminaires have at least an IP65 protection rating. This means they are dustproof and protected against jets of water from all directions. The housing is made of corrosionresistant cast aluminium with double powder coating and is therefore particularly weatherresistant. Groundrecessed luminaires have an IP68 protection rating. This means these luminaires are also protected against the consequences of continuous immersion in water.

Selecting the right luminaire for any distanceA short lighting distance to the exhibit requires wide light distribution. Narrower light distribution is needed with increasing distance to avoid spill light to the left and right of the exhibit. To achieve 50lx on the exhibit, a 12W LED module is sufficient at a distance of 3m and 24W at 20m. Stay flexible: interchangeable light distributions enable you to adapt the lighting to different exhibits at any time.

Select the light distribution matching the exhibit

ERCO lighting tools feature up to seven different light distributions. Narrow distributions such as spot (approx. 15°) are ideal for accentuating. For smaller exhibits or at large light ing distances, narrow spot distribution (approx. 8°) is optimal. Oval beam angles such as oval flood (approx. 20° x 60°) are excellent for lighting elongated sculptures.

Lighting railway stations and stops perfectlyExciting projects

Local and longdistance railway stations are places that connect people. In addition to their function as stops, they must enable passengers to rapidly find their way around and should be perceived as safe places. The correct lighting of platforms, circulation areas and railway station architecture is essential. For this purpose luminaires must meet two main conditions. Firstly maximum resistance to external factors such as heat, cold and moisture for extreme resili ence in continuous operation. Secondly, luminaires at stations need to offer a variety of design options for a holistic lighting concepts and also provide good visual comfort. Luminaires from ERCO meet these criteria. We give you tips on how to select the right luminaires for your project and what economical lighting concepts with high quality can look like.

Guiding travellers with vertical lighting

Select robust outdoor luminaires

Creating safety with sufficient general lighting

Stations are often in operation 24/7 and exposed to a variety of external factors, for example temperature, adverse weather and dust. This requires particularly robust out door luminaires that can withstand external influences. High IP68 protection, as with groundrecessed luminaires, ensures that even prolonged exposure to moisture is unable to affect ERCO luminaires. Norinse coated projector housings ensure a low accumulation of dirt.

Use light to provide good orientation in stations. Uniformly illuminated walls help with orientation and efficiently create a pleasant impression of brightness. Wallwash ing means that dark corners are avoided and a wide effect of space in the room is created. Projectors, recessed luminaires, surface mounted luminaires and groundrecessed luminaires with wallwash light distribution are suitable for illuminating walls.

Make circulation areas safe with glare controlled general lighting. To make irregu larities in the ground clearly visible, uniform general lighting with high visual comfort is used. Depending on the mounting situation, downlights available as recessed and surface mounted versions are suitable, as well as floodlights. Attractive locations with high visual comfort can be created by combining wallwashing and horizontal general lighting.

Lighting stations and stops perfectlyWhat you should know

Wallwashing creates a very even distribution of light on a wall surface and makes the room appear wide. Groundrecessed luminaires can be integrated inconspicuously into the architecture. The distance to the wall should be approximately one third of the room height. Luminaire spacing of up to 1.3 times the distance to the wall are possible.

Tip: To uniformly illuminate a 10mhigh station concourse with a distance of 3m to the wall and luminaire spacing of 3.5m with 50lx, we recommend wallwashers with 24 watt LED module.

Further lighting methods and planning aids can be found on the web at www.erco.com/outdoorstations

Aiding orientation with wallwashing

Setting highlights with accent lighting

Floodlighting ceilings for a spacious appearance

It is not easy for travellers to quickly comprehend complex station buildings. Accent lighting can help to create points of orientation and perceptual hierarchies. Projectors with narrow light distributions are the ideal luminaires for this. They achieve high illuminance even with low wattages. This creates concise focal points to direct travellers' attention in a targeted manner.

Ceiling lighting is a good solution to make station concourses look bright and spacious in the evening. The choice of a lighttoned ceiling paint is also decisive for the effect. Ceiling washlighting is particularly recommended if the construction or decoration have a special aesthetic value. Special ceiling washlights with narrow or wide light distribution enable very uniform illumination of ceilings.

24/7 continuous operationIt must be ensured that luminaires can be operated reliably and without failures in continuous operation. ERCO outdoor luminaires require very little maintenance. The LEDs we use have an average failure rate of less than 0.1% over 50,000 operating hours. With 100 downlights each with 10 LEDs, only 1 LED would thus be affected in continuous operation over 6 years – this low value is far below the market average. You can thus rely on economical operation.

Lighting bridges in outdoor spaces perfectlyExciting projects

Bridges are not just functional structures that span rivers or barriers. Bridges also frequently function as landmarks. Properly illuminated, they characterise the nighttime appearance of a town, city or an entire region. Good lighting is important in such applications to appropriately highlight the architecture and also to create an attractive environment for passers by in the dark. Different bridge constructions such as girder bridges, cable bridges or historical arched bridges require their own lighting concepts. ERCO LED outdoor luminaires with up to seven different light distributions offer designers a wide range of creative freedom. In all situations, robust luminaires for outdoor use are needed that can withstand adverse weather conditions, that can be mounted flexibly, and that require little maintenance so that they can be used even in hardtoreach places. We show you which ERCO outdoor luminaires are suitable for the illumination of bridges and give you tips for perfect bridge lighting.

How to optimally implement light colours

Accenting, floodlighting or grazing light: select the right light distribution

Illuminate from any location

The selection ranges from very narrow to wide light distributions. With narrow light distributions such as narrow spot (approx. 8°), bridge details such as steel cables can be accentuated. Light distributions such as extra wide flood (approx. 90°) are particularly suitable for illuminating larger areas. Special grazing light wallwashers enable you to strikingly emphasise surface structures through strong shadows.

Using light colours correctly aids the perception of different materials. Warm light colours such as 3000K are suitable for warmtoned materials such as wood, as often used in pedestrian bridges. For cooler surfaces like steel or concrete we recommend cool light colours such as 4000K. RGBW luminaires are suitable for scenographic lighting concepts with a variety of colours.

Extreme heights, difficult to reach places and minimum space: bridges can be a challenge when installing luminaires. Thanks to numerous mounting options, robust ERCO projectors enable the implementation of almost any lighting concept for lowmaintenance operation. No matter whether you want to install projectors onto the girders of a trussed bridge, to the high pylons of cable bridges or on the ground – we offer suitable mounting options.

Lighting bridges perfectlyWhat you should know

The visual impact of pylons from afar can be emphasised with grazing light by positioning projectors with very narrow light distributions close to the pylon. A slight inclination of about 10° towards each pylon is recommended so that no spill light shines into the sky.

Tip: Projectors with an 8W LED module and narrow spot light distribution are suitable for illuminating a 30m high pylon. The luminaire is positioned directly next to the pylon for achieving a grazing light effect.

Effectively accentuating bridge constructions

Rely on responsible lighting Pay attention to good visual comfort

Sustainable solutions are indispensable for bridge lighting. The night sky as well as flowing water below bridges should be kept dark and free of spill light to avoid harming the ecosystem. ERCO lighting tools make a significant contribution to sustainable design and planning thanks to precise optics and excellent glare control. ERCO luminaires are also dimmable because adjusting brightness is important to protect the environment.

Drivers and pedestrians must not be dazzled by light from the road, footpath or architecture. With soft contrasts in brightness, passersby can move safely on pedestrian bridges and quickly comprehend their surroundings. ERCO luminaires with oval light distribution illuminate routes and paths with softly diminishing light beams to particular advantage. They also feature excellent glare control and ensure maximum visual comfort.

Outdoor luminaires with various light coloursIn addition to 3000K and 4000K colour temperatures, ERCO outdoor luminaires are available in four further spectra on request. With 2700K and 3500K as well as further colour rendering indices, an exciting diversity is at your disposal. For scenographic lighting with variously coloured light, ERCO projectors, floodlights and wallwashers with RGBW always offer the right light colour for your next bridge project.

Robust and diverse Only a few ground recessed luminaires bring together high levels of resistance to environmental factors with nuanced lighting technology. The Tesis range of ground recessed luminaires not only includes various sizes, shapes and wattages, but also six light distributions.

Creating nocturnal landmarksTo ensure that striking buildings are noticed in busy urban environ ments, lighting designers install high lumen output projectors and floodlights for nighttime display purposes. The projectors and floodlights in the Kona range carry out such tasks with extreme efficiency and precision.

This distinguishes our outdoor luminairesDiscover the numerous features

As tough as they comeMade for all types of weather

Extreme durability

ERCO outdoor luminaires are specifically developed to meet the requirements of urban environments. Housings are made of corrosion resistant material and are therefore especially weatherproof. Norinse surface treatments ensure a reduced dirt deposit. All ERCO outdoor luminaires have at least an IP65 pro tection rating, making them dustproof and protected against jets of water from all directions.

ERCO outdoor luminaires give the cold shoulder to external influences of a mechanical nature: robust groundrecessed luminaires remain intact even with daily bouts of heavy walkover traffic. Bollard luminaires that comply with IK10 impact resistance effortlessly withstand rough external treatment. This in turn means less repair costs and less downtime in daily operation.

The LEDs in our luminaires have extremely long service lives. This means that over an operating time of 50,000 hours, at least 90% of LEDs still maintain 90% of their original luminous flux (L90/B10). With many LEDs, this statement even applies to 100,000 hours. Even after 11 years of continuous operation the maintenance value of the illuminance is still not fallen below.

A floating appearance for hall ceilingsCeiling washlighting lends a lightweight, almost floating appearance to wide hall canopies or cantilevered roofs. Ceiling washlights such as Lightscan are available with wide or narrow light distributions matched to the application.

One lighting tool for paths and squaresThe Castor bollard luminaire visually connects paths and squares outdoors. Its innovative optical system with ringshaped lens creates either light distribution aligned at 180° to one side for paths, or 360° light distribution for open areas.

Seven light distributions From small to large

Lighting concepts are as diverse as the architecture itself. ERCO offers you the right lighting tools with precise light distribution for the complete bandwidth of lighting tasks – ranging from focused narrow spot with approx. 6° and highefficiency, extra wide and linear light beams to uniform wallwashing.

You'll find the right size and lumen package for every lighting task at ERCO. Projectors, floodlights, wallwashers and downlights are available with an LED module power consumption of 2W to 96W – ideal for the complete range of outdoor projects, from small to monumental.
