SACE Emax: the reference standardin air circuit-breakers

SACE Emax low-voltage air circuit-breakershave been designed and manufactured byABB SACE L.V. with the aim of satisfying themost advanced market requirements.

Building on the highly-acclaimed resultsobtained by the SACE Isomax S series ofmoulded-case circuit-breakers, this new seriesextends the characteristics of safety, reliability,integration and coordination that distinguishthe entire ABB SACE L.V. low-voltage productfamily to high rated current values.

The SACE Emax series won the favour of userson all markets as soon as it was launched,proving itself to be the perfect solution to therequirements of even the most technologicallysophisticated installations.Thanks to its new versions and performancefeatures, combined with a further-increasedrange of accessories, SACE Emax makes itpossible to anticipate the design trends of thefuture.

The SACE Emax series benefits fromABB SACE L.V.’s experience in the manufactureof air circuit- breakers, which began in the lateFifties with the SACE Otomax series - the firstair circuit-breaker designed and manufacturedentirely in Italy. The series comprised aswitchgear range with rated currents of 1250 to5000 amps and a maximum breaking capacityof 100 kA.The success of this first series was echoed bythat of the G30 series in the Seventies, whichwas the first to offer electronic releasesalongside traditional electromagnetic releases.

This takes us to 1979, when ABB SACE L.V.started manufacturing the SACE Novomaxseries - the first high-performance current-limiting air circuit-breakers on the market.

1989 marked the arrival of the SACEMegamax, a significant step forwards thatintroduced PR1 microprocessor-based releasesinstalled on-board the circuit-breakers. Thanksto this innovation, air circuit-breakers weretransformed from a simple component to anintegral and sophisticated part of a complex“system”.

The strengths of the current SACE Emax seriesbuild on over half a century’s developmentand are the logical consequence of a designand manufacturing philosophy firmly focusedon innovation, safety and reliability.

A complete range to satisfy any installation

The SACE Emax series is offered in a completerange of rated currents and available as fivedifferent models in fixed, withdrawable, threeand four-pole versions. Characterised byuninterrupted rated currents of from 800 to6300 amps and breaking capacities of up to150 kA, the series is able to satisfy the mostdemanding requirements of modern industrialand naval installations. Each model is availablein a variety of different circuit-breaker optionsthat have the same dimensions but differentrated currents and breaking capacities. Lookedat from a manufacturing and use standpoint,SACE Emax circuit-breakers can be divided intotwo main categories of use: selective circuit-breakers and current-limiting circuit-breakers.The former make it possible to implementdifferent types of selectivity thanks to highshort-time withstand current values and theSACE PR111 and PR112 overcurrent releases.The different types of selectivity available are:current, energy, time and zone.

The current-limiting circuit-breakers make itpossible to achieve a considerable reductionin the peak current compared to theprospective current and, therefore, to limit thespecific let-through energy. The resultantbenefits include a reduction in electrodynamicand thermal stresses, consequently making itpossible toreduce thedimensioningof theinstallation.

An intelligent and flexible answerto all your protection requirements

SACE PR111 and SACE PR112microprocessor-basedovercurrent releasesAlongside its modern series of air circuit-breakers, ABB SACE L.V. presents a completeand innovative range of microprocessor-basedelectronic overcurrent releases, the SACEPR111 and PR112. Anyone installing SACEEmax circuit-breakers has the option ofchoosing the release that is best suited to theirinstallation needs in any given situation,together with the designer’s requirementsregarding safety and reliability. The advancesmade by electrical installations implementingdistributed intelligence systems has made the

role played by releases increasingly important,demanding that they offer:• high operating precision;• a wide range of settings;• complete protection against all types of faults;• measurement and monitoring of the main

electrical parameters;• dialogue with supervision and control

systems such as SACE SD-View 810.These functions are provided on SACE Emaxcircuit-breakers using the SACE PR111 andPR112 microprocessor-based releases, whichprovide protection functions against overloads(L), short-circuit’s (instantaneous I andselective S) and earth faults (G).

Earth fault protectionA number of different options are available forearth fault protection:• using protection function “G” of the release:

in this case the earth current is calculated bythe release itself using the vector sum of thephase and neutral currents (“residual”method)

• using a special toroid coil that is installed onthe connection between the star centre andearth of the MV/LV transformer, with directreading of the earth leakage current (“Sourceground return”)

• using electronic residual-current relays froma SACE RCQ switchboard with separatetoroid coil.

This range of different options makes itpossible to cover every earth fault protectionand selectivity requirement.

The growing complexity of installationstogether with the need for increasinglyefficient and safe switchgear has led ABBSACE L.V. to develop units that complete thefunctions offered by a microprocessor-basedrelease, the “brains” of a circuit-breaker.The SACE PR010/T and SACE PR010/K unitsare the result this product developmentapproach.

SACE PR010/T:fingertip controlThis unit is able to provide test, programmingand parameter readout functions for SACEEmax series protection releases.Thanks to its compact dimensions, simplicityof operation and handling, this unit isparticularly easy to use in all conditions, evenwhen the circuit-breaker is installed. The Testfunction, which can be implemented usingboth releases, makes it possible to check allthe protection functions in two different ways,

either manually or automatically,simultaneously monitoring whether themicroprocessor is operating correctly. It is alsopossible to store any test results of interest inthe unit itself and export them to a personalcomputer using the “report download”function. Parameters can only be set and readout on the PR112 range of releases.ABB SACE L.V. also supplies a floppy diskwith the unit containing the applicationsoftware for updating or adapting the Testunit in line with the development of newproducts.

SACE PR010/KThis is a signalling unit able to convert thedigital signals from the SACE PR112 release toelectric signals, thus making it possible tomonitor the status of the protection device,including remotely. The information providedmainly concerns the alarm conditions of allthe protection functions and the release’salarm situations. This unit also allows one toimplement a load control function that actsdirectly on the operating means of othercircuit-breakers installed downstream.The “intelligence” of the unit resides in thefact that it is able to recognise the type ofrelease concerned, enabling it to configureitself to suit the characteristics of the latter.

From releases to an integrated system

Microprocessor-based releases offeringmeasurement and dialogue functions are thefinal link in distributed control systems for lowand medium voltage electrical installations,based on the use of intelligent units connectedto one another using a local network.The new SACE PR112 releases also make itpossible to achieve integration in the “logic” ofthe centralised management system of theinstallations using circuit-breakers that aresuitable both for the protection andautomation of electrical installations.It is possible to control and monitor thefollowing using the dialogue unit:• circuit-breaker status• protection function parameters• number of operations (opening/closing)• value of the current interrupted• operating status of the release• prealarm/alarm indications• operating mechanism (opening/closing).

The microprocessor-based protection releasesin the SACE PR112/PD series inserted in theSACE SD-View 810 control system representABB SACE L.V.’s basic answer for the controland automation of electrical installations inindustry and the service sector.It is also possible to interface the SACE PR112/PD

These versions are based on the movingpart of the corresponding withdrawablecircuit-breaker on which all the breakingcomponents and the operating mechanismhave been replaced by simple connectionsbetween the top and bottom contacts. Theyare used as no-load isolators in situationswhere this function is provided for in theinstallation.

These versions are similar to isolatingtrolleys but with the bottom or top isolatingcontacts replaced by connections that areconnected in a short-circuit and earthed.They are used by temporarily racking theminto the fixed part of a withdrawable circuit-breaker for earthing the top or bottomterminals before carrying out maintenanceoperations on the external circuit.

They’ve passed the toughest exams.Here’s the proof

SACE Emax circuit-breakers and theiraccessories comply with the internationalStandards IEC 947, EN 60947 (harmonised in17 countries by CENELEC), CEI EN 60947 andIEC 1000, together with the followingEuropean directives:

• “Low Voltage Directives” (LVD) No. 73/23/CEE (and subsequent variants);

• “Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive”(EMC) No. 89/336/CEE.

The switchgear complies with therequirements set out in the regulations forinstallations on ships and has been approvedby the following Naval Registers:

• RINA (Registro Italiano Navale)• Det Norske Veritas• Bureau Veritas• Germanischer Lloyd• Lloyd’s Register of Shipping• Polskj Reiestr Statkow

This certification of conformity with theproduct Standards mentioned is carried out, incompliance with European Standard EN 45011,by the Italian certification body ACAE (Asso-ciazione per la Certificazione delle Apparec-chiature Elettriche) recognised by theEuropean body LOVAG (Low VoltageAgreement Group).

The ABB SACE L.V. Quality System complieswith the ISO 9001 international Standard(model for quality assurance in design,development, manufacture, installation andservice) and the equivalent European StandardEN ISO 9001 and its Italian version UNI ENISO 9001.

The third-party certifying body is RINA-QUACER. ABB SACE obtained its first three-year certification in 1990 and is now on itsthird certification.The Frosinone factory has achieved ISO 14001environmental certification.

SACE Emax presents all the benefits of the linePoint by point

Easyinstallation

The number of mountingpoints required has beenreduced compared to theprevious series and theyhave all been placed on thebase of the circuit-breakerto make it easier to installthe circuit-breakers inswitchboards.The availability of a widerange of terminals makes itpossible to build wall-mounted switchboards orswitchboards that can beaccessed from the rear withrear connections.The circuit-breakers areavailable with differentcombinations of top andbottom terminals to meetspecial requirements.

Easycustomisation

Accessory installationoperations have beenoptimised and simplifiedthanks to a range of specialconstruction features. Allthe electrical accessories arefitted from the front. Thismakes it simpler to fit theaccessories and means thattheir installation can beplanned in the lastinstallation phase. What’smore, the simplicity andsafety of the operationsmeans that the endcustomer can also carry outany customisation thatmight become necessaryduring the life of theinstallation. To this end, thecurrent transformers for thedifferent rated currents arealso extremely easy tochange.

Optimal answers toproblems of design,operation andmanagement.

The protection releasesfeature sophisticatedprotection functions andwide adjustment ranges.

Particularly compactdimensions.

The same height anddepth for the entireseries.

The same accessoriesfor the entire range bothfor DC and AC.

Operator safety isensured by a multitudeof different features,including:• double insulation

between accessoriesand power circuit;

• key locks and padlockdevices on operatingmechanisms;

• racking out with doorclosed onwithdrawable circuit-breakers;

• anti-insertion locks forpreventing the insertionof moving parts in fixedparts with differentrated currents.

Accessories that don’tneed wiring.

The entire series of SACEEmax air circuit-breakers isnot only characterised byhaving constantdimensions but the sameheight and depth as well.This facilitates the designphases, making for easierfabrication withstandardised supportingframes. The sheet steelstructure of the circuit-breaker is extremelycompact and enablessignificant space savings. Asingle front flange for theentire series simplifies theconstruction ofswitchboard doors,enabling a single type ofdrilling to be used.

Optimalwarehousemanagement

Stock management in thewarehouses of electricalmaterial distributors andcustomers who need tomanage the maintenanceand spare parts of largeinstallations is made muchsimpler and rationalised bythe adoption of highly-effective solutions,including:• a single line of

accessories for the entireseries

• an opening and closingrelease that can be usedas a single accessory.The function isdetermined exclusivelyby the mounting position

• duty releases that can bepowered in DC or ACwithout any modification

• single fixed part for eachcircuit-breaker model(even if they havedifferent rated currentsand different breakingcapacities)

• interchangeability ofSACE PR111 and PR112overcurrent releases

• conversion kit fordifferent terminal andversion solutions.

Efficient andsafe installations

SACE Emax circuit-breakersprovide a high level ofsafety for those operatingon the installation:• a series of locks (key

locks or padlockdevices) ensurecomplete safety againstany incorrect operations

• the accessories areinstalled from the frontand operator safety isensured by the doubleinsulation thatguarantees totalsegregation of theaccessory seatings fromthe power circuit

• circuit-breakers can alsobe racked out with thecompartment doorclosed

• option of mechanicalinterlocking across twoor three circuit-breakers,irrespective of theirmodel or version (fixedor withdrawable) usingflexible cables. Thecircuit-breakers can beinstalled vertically orhorizontally.

• different protectiongrades available,including IP54,implemented using atransparent tamper-proofguard for fitting on thefront of the switchboard

Easy and safemaintenance

Just a few simpleoperations allow fullinspection of the arcingchamber and powercontacts with the circuit-breaker out of service;(withdrawable versions caneven be racked out withthe door closed).Isolation of the accessorycompartment from thepower circuit prevents anypossibility of accidentalcontact with live parts.

The intelligence of thenew-design SACE PR111and PR112 microprocessor-based overcurrent releasesenables: very highoperating precision, a wideadjustment range,protection against all typesof faults and monitoring ofthe main electricalparameters, operationwithout the need for anauxiliary power supply,sensitivity to the true root-mean-square value of thecurrent, and the option ofdialogue with computerisedsupervision and controlsystems such as the SACESD-View 810.
