History ofthe
Institution
“Sevamandir” – the temple of service, outwardly a silent school and home with pupils with openness and joy issituated just outside Portonovo – in-between Chidambaram and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu. Ms. Annie Marie
Peterson of Denmark, a rare lover of humanity founded this institution in 1921 for poor, untrodden and needyfemale children in India with a very few members below 10 children. Now it grows like a banyan tree with
more than 2000 children. Her love and devotion for India had captured the heart of Mahatma Gandhi himselfand he laid the foundation stone for this national institution and gave the name it bears today. Spirit of AnnieMarie Peterson who had a frenzy for nourishing truly educational, cultural and National values, grow and aideforever in Sevamandir and preserve its distinctive character. This institution will provide shelter for destitute
women and the inmates of the staff who want to stay in the home for aged after retirement. In 1949,Sevamandir was recognized as JUNIOR BASIC TRAINING SCHOOL’. In 1956, the junior basic training school was
converted into a SENIOR BASIC TRAINING SCHOOL. Ms. Annie Marie Peterson applied the name ‘NationalChristian Girls School’ in 1923 on its inauguration. On seeing the service of this institution, Gandhiji changedits name as “SEVAMANDIR’ which signifies ‘TEMPLE OF SERVICE’ Sevamandir was the first institution in the
south which defied the foreign rule, by refusing to get recognition by the Government thereby foregoing anyGovt. grant. It introduced spinning and weaving, as handicraft, as a part of curriculum as far back as in 1922,ie even before the introduction of Gandhiji’s ‘Craft based’ Wardha system of education. The lamp lit by Ms.Annie Marie Peterson was preserved by Ms. Mary Chakko, her successor. Now the institution is managed bythe managing trustee worded as a Principal in the Teacher Training Institute, Ms. J. PRABHAVATHY, who is a
scholar in the educational field and she had her studies in USA and UK. She was felicitated with ‘BESTTEACHER AWARD’ by Dr. Radhakrishnan. In 2006, September ‘THE JEWEL OF INDIA’ award was given to her forthe best service in the field of education and service to humanity. After that she was awarded more than tenwards for the appreciation of priceless service for the enhancement of poor and needy people in the society.
More than 35 years of service as a teacher and principal in the teacher training institute under her ablemanagement with other efficient Board Members and staff the institute had got name and fame continuously. At present, Sevamandir comprises of a Teacher Training Institute, a Higher Secondary School for girls, a home
for school children and a Matriculation School. It is a fully residential school and around 2000 inmates atSevmandir family. They live in the campus itself making the life of Sevamandir bright and active. The formerChief Minister Mr. K.Kamarajar, Mr. Praksha, former Governor Mr.k.k.Shah, Mr.Sundaravadivelu, Director ofEducation. Mr.A.N.Maheswary, Chair Person, NCERT, New Delhi and many eminent people of India and from
abroad visited and appreciated Sevamandir’s enthusiastic and impressed word for the upliftment of thesociety especially for Women.
VisionStatement TO PROMOTE A SOCIETY BASED ON LOVE, SERVICE, FREEDOM AND FRATERNITY
Missionand
Objectives
MISSION History beckons; SEVAMANDIR is a NINETY SIX years young. The institution is a metaphor for love, commitment, care and service. It was true, amongst many there were few who had distinguished themselves
in the Missionary field, and so also there are many famous educational institutions that could boast of bringingout a bunch of exemplified luminaries, but yet the institution “SEVAMANDIR” had a special distinction and itsfounder Ms. Annie Marie Petersen is a rare personality amidst her contemporaries. What was then, the special
characteristic feature in Periamma that distinguished her from others in the missionary field? When shereturned from Denmark, she began to gather a circle of friends and relatives to whom she lectured about the
appealing condition of the Indian poor people, especially the condition of the poor women and children forwhom the message of Jesus Christ should be taken besides means to alleviate their sufferings and ignoranceby providing education and home, and at the same time pointing out to them, how difficult it is to carry outthis task under the then Danish Indian Missionary. Society, whose regulation and control did not allow her to
act independently. This personal appeal made direct to her kith and kins, which were generally simplegoodhearted and god-fearing people, brought a spontaneous response from them and in return thry had
promised her their support and prayers with financial help to carry on her Mission in Portonovo and thus thatday was born. ‘PORTONOVO MISSION’ which gave Miss Annie Marie Peterson unfettered authority to campaign
and conduct her mission work in India without any ‘pull’ or ‘control’ from her homeland. ‘Service’ under theLord was started for the poor children and women. She showed them affection and love which are the mostcardinal principles of her religion. The only Educational Institution, throughout the nook and corner of the
Southern India, whose foundation stone was laid and blessed by Gandhiji, the Father of Nation, wasSevamandir and true to its name which signifies, ‘a Temple of Service’ it served the Nation in its own way in
the worst period of its National struggle against foreign rule, by participating in the National Movementlaunched by its Leader Gandhiji, one after the other – say whether it was ‘Civil Disobedience Movement which
was otherwise known a s ‘Non-Cooperation Movement’ launched by Mahatma Gandhiji in 1921. ‘SaltSathyagraha’ in 1930s. ‘Boycot of Lancashire Mill Textiles, in 1933. Boycot of Liquor shops campaign in 1937.‘Temple Entry and Removal of Untouchability campaign, in 1940s and the last and most distinguished was the‘Introduction of Wardha System of Basic Education’. Sevamandir sent its students to distinguish themselves in
the Fine Arts (Tamil Literature) to the far-off Shanthineketan to the nearest Annamalai University to takeDiploma in Tamil and Indian carnatic Music, as it wanted to nurse and encourage ‘oriental culture’ of thecountry. The very entrance door and the magnificent pillars that adorn the vast Corridors of ‘Sevamandir’speak of the ancient Indian skill in ‘Wood Architecture’ and its cultural heritage. Periamma was a lover of
Indian Arts, music, Dress, and Meals – Though she was a Dane she was an Indian to 100 percent to the core.Periamma in her 40 years of stay in India had never induced not enforced conversion to Christian fold. By her
exemplary conduct alone, she had convinced many a soul to accept Jesus as their only Saviour. This wasanother, special characteristic trait in her mission. OBJECTIVES: To become a true citizen of India To excelin all areas of teaching-learning, evaluation, research, technology and teaching methodology.
