News and information across Dorset (and beyond) for children who are disabled and their

families and carers

Good news for Xchange members: the new Dorset Carers Card is coming.

The new Dorset Carers Card was launched in June last year. It’s an initiative funded by the three councils (Dorset County Council, Bournemouth Borough Council and Poole Borough Council) and the Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group to support carers of all ages and to recognise and reward the contribution they make. The Carers Card is issued to registered unpaid carers and lets the card holder access discounts for goods and services across Dorset with over 100 organisations currently joined up.

The Children’s Services team at Dorset County Council have been working with the Adult Services team ( who manage the card) to make it easy for registered Xchange members to get the card without the need to register separately as a carer. And, the good news is that starting in February 2017, this will happen. The Carers Card will be issued automatically to all new Xchange members and to those who have joined in the last 12 months. If you joined more than 12 months ago, then you’ll be asked to apply with a simple email to us just to confirm your address details are still correct. We wouldn’t want your card to get sent to the wrong address. There’ll be further details in our February issue.

In the meantime you can discover more information about the

NEW~Pilot Youth Befriending Project for Dorset Families: Starting early 2017, YMCA Bournemouth/Dorset Playschemes will be running a new Youth Befriending project for young people with disabilities aged between the ages of 12-18 years. What is the project about? Could you do with a Befriender? If you are aged 12-18 with a disability and would like to socialise with other young people then this new scheme is for you! Don’t want Parents tagging along all the time maybe, but you feel you need that little bit extra support to engage fully - what are you waiting for! What could you do? Learn new skills suitable to you / Swimming / visits to localparks Coffee & chat at the café / shopping / supporting at local clubs Local youth club / Anything within reason you would like to do!

How will it work? You complete a registration pack and then we will call you to clarify anything. A co-ordinator will then match you with a Befriender of similar age, with common interests and living close to you. Your Volunteer Befriender will be aged 16- 25 years. They will be able to guide and support you to have fun, and get the best out of your short break! We will give your befriender key information on how best to support you and ensure they are given any relevant training and have all the relevant safeguarding checks. We will aim to:- Champion and add value to young lives by

providing experiences that challenge, enable and develop the individual. The Befriending project hopes to provide opportunities for young disabled people to actively participate in the development and improvement of services for young people with disabilities living or studying across Dorset. How can I attend or be referred? You can self-refer or can be referred by contacting us by either phone or email. We will then send you out a form to find out more about you and how we can support your time with us and also let you know when you can start. When and where will we be running from? We will start by running each Monday night 6-8pm from Riffs on the grounds of Ferndown First School, Ferndown. Cost to attend? There will be a charge of £2.50 per session to include tea/coffee/ squash and toast. You will have to pay for any activities you take part in and we will cover your befriender’s expenses. What will you get out of it? Time for you to do things you want to do and be supported! Who funds the project? This project is funded with thanks from Dorset County Council Short break programme. NEW ~Pilot 15-18 year olds youth Project: from January 2017

From early 2017, YMCA Bournemouth/Dorset Playschemes will be running a NEW Youth project for young people with disabilities between the ages of 15-18 years in Dorset.

What is the project about? The project is about a safe, nurturing, creative and fun environment for young people with a disability aged 15-18 years in a youth club environment. We will not offer 1:1 support however we will have high staff ratios and will try to recruit Buddy Volunteers aged 15+ who are invaluable to ensure the project can best support you. We aim to champion and add value to young lives by providing experiences that challenge, enable and develop the individual; by giving them a voice to be heard; by helping them feel safe, valued, supported and engaged within their community; and in turn raising further awareness of disabilities. The Youth project hopes to provide opportunities for young disabled people to actively participate in the development and improvement of services for young people with disabilities living or studying across Dorset.

How can I attend or be referred? You can self-refer or can be referred by contacting us by either phone or email. You will then be sent a form to find out more about you, detailing how we can provide you with the best support, and to also let us know when you can start. When are where will we be running from? We will start by running each Monday night 6-8pm from Riffs on the grounds of Ferndown First School, Ferndown. Cost to attend? There will be a charge of £2.50 per session to include tea/coffee/ squash and toast. As we also build up numbers we will also look at running a little tuck shop. What will you get out of it? You will learn development skills such as team working, problem solving as well as life skills. We will also look into accreditation towards nationally recognised awards. Who funds the project? This project is funded with thanks from Dorset County Council Short break projects.

The public consultation phase of

the Clinical Services Review runs

across the county from 1

December 2016 until 28

February 2017.

The Review was launched in response to major challenges which health and care face both in Dorset and across the rest of the country. These include:

a growing population with more people living longer

an increasing demand on services

workforce shortages that will be difficult to fill

variations in the quality of care And a potential funding gap of at least £158m per year by 2020 Copies of the consultation document - Improving Dorset’s healthcare - will be widely available throughout Dorset initially via GP practices and hospitals and we are encouraging everyone to get involved. If you would like to request copies along with supporting materials to send to your networks or contacts please contact us via [email protected]. Anyone who doesn’t have access to the internet can find out where to pick up a copy of the consultation document and questionnaire by calling 01202 541946.

Throughout the consultation the latest updates will be given out via social media channels twitter.com/DorsetCCG and Facebook.com/NHSDorsetCCG. Further information is also available online

The People First Dorset first wall hanging Friendship Club 2017 Calendar is now on sale! Photos include winning pictures from the photography competition, with the theme of ‘friendships’. The calendar is available to buy at Friendship Club events at a cost of £6 per calendar.

It can also be purchased from Dorchester Tourist Information Centre. Any questions, please contact [email protected]
