    Our Elders in the Faith

In early February, somechurches recall how Baby Jesusparents brought him to Jerusalem

to offer a sacrifice. Twochurch elders met them:Simeon, who we assume was

elderly because he was readyto die, but for his longing tosee the Messiah; and Anna,

who was 84 asenior citizenby any account(Luke 2:22-40).

Their years didnt makethem elders, though, as

much as their wisdom andfaith. Simeon wasrighteous

and devout. He came to thetemple as the Holy Family didbecause when the Spirit guidedhim to go, he knew the divinevoice. Then, despite the Messiahsimprobably young age, Simeonrecognized Jesus and spokeGod-given words about him.Anna was a prophet who

had spent countless hours inthe temple, fasting and praying.

Upon meeting the Christ-Child, she promptly beganpraising God and speaking

about Jesus to all who wouldlisten.

Who are your elders in thefaith? Whatever their age,

doubtless they live out theirfaith by waiting on and listeningfor the Spirit, praising Godregularly and speaking of

    Jesus to others.

    Knowing the Flock

The pastor had just come to a new

church. He was talking to one of thedeacons and the deacon said, "Pastor,we have been talking among ourselvesabout what to call you."

The pastor said, "What did you call thelast pastor?"

The deacon replied, "We called him the'Hog Caller.'"

The pastor looked a little surprised andsaid, "At the last place, they called methe 'Shepherd of the Flock,' but of

course you know your own people herebetter than I do."
