    President of NSE, Engr. Mustafa

    Balarabe Shehu, FNSE, has

    commended Nigerian Engineers

    manning the countrys premiercommunication satellite ground

    station saying that the team is

    indeed the pride of Nigeria and

    the entire Africa.

    Engr. Shehu spoke Thursday,

    10th January, 2013 after a tour of

    the Nigerian Communication

    Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Ltd. fa-

    cility located at the Obasanjo

    Space Centre in Lugbe, Abuja.

    The President, along with mem-

    bers of EXCO, visited the agency

    on the invitation of the manage-

    ment.

    During the tour, he stated that

    space technology has a vital role

    to play in the countrys quest for

    development. Engr. Shehu also

    said that the robust space tech-

    nology development policy of

    the federal government must be

    backed by strong political willfor effective and full utilisation

    of the countrys communication

    satellite facility. He decried the

    prevailing low patronage and

    unwillingness on the part of

    governments at all levels and

    some agencies in taking ad-

    vantage of the satellite

    launched into space by

    NIGCOMSAT Ltd.

    The President said that

    NigComSat-1R satellite facility

    is fit to be used by ministries,

    departments and agencies

    (MDAs) and the private sector.

    He expressed his confidence in

    the ability of the NigComSat-1R

    to bring to bear affordable

    broadband access to the internet

    consumers in the country.

    He encouraged the management

    of the agency not to relent intheir marketing effort of the sat-

    ellite to other countries in Africa

    and across the globe. He said

    that the management should not

    leave any stone unturned in the

    drive as revenue accruing from

    their services will go a long way

    to help development effort of gov-

    ernment.

    Executive of NIGCOMSAT Ltd.Engr. Timasaniyu Ahmed-Rufai

    led the NSE team on a tour of

    the agencys Micro-electronic

    Centre (MEC), where they

    viewed the various components

    that were deployed to ensure

    success of the e-voting system at

    the recent NSE AGM as well as

    other prototypes.

    Engr. Ahmed-Rufai also took the NSE team to the

    agencys Ground Station which includes its Satel-

    lite Control Centre and Network Operations Centre

    as well as its Direct to Home Transmission Centre

    (DTH).

    He assured the Engineers that when the satellite is

    fully deployed, content providers would have an op-portunity to ride on the platform and leverage its

    use to revolutionise and improve the broadcasting

    media in Nigeria.

    Rufai said that the satellite has a life-span of over

    15 years adding that the agency is ready to meet

    the needs of Nigerians as far as satellite require-

    ment is concerned. He noted that the DTH alone

    could generate an average of N20billion for the

    country if the right policies are put in place.

    Council Meeting HeldThe NSE Council held the first meeting in the New Year on Friday, 11 th January, 2013 at the Rockview

    Hotel in Abuja.

    High point of the meeting was the inauguration of the newly elected Vice Presidents and EXCO mem-

    bers by the President, Engr. Mustafa Balarabe Shehu, FNSE.

    The Council also approved the theme for the 2013 National Conference and Annual General Meeting.

    UNIBEN Alumni honours Engr. Dr. Olatunji

    University of Benin Alumni Association has honoured the Director

    of Professional Development, NSE, Engr. Dr. Tunde M. Olatunji,

    FNSE, with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

    He bagged the award at the 13th Biennial General Assembly/42nd

    Founders Day ceremonies which held in the University of Beninbetween 15th -18th November, 2012.

    The UNIBEN Alumni said that, it included Engr. Dr. Olatunji,

    FNSE on its list of distinguished awardees because of the several

    high points he has achieved in his career. It further explained that

    the decision to honour him is intended to encourage him to main-

    tain his continued pursuit of excellence.

    The body also mentioned that Olatunjis scholarly display in his

    published works in the areas of Quality Control tests, Appropriate

    Technology and Large Scale Testing of structures immensely influ-
