The Heart Our hearts are directly responsible for our actions. There is a direct link between eternity and the condition of the heart upon our death. I believe there are three imperatives from God that arrest our attention concerning our hearts... Guard it, train it, and preserve it.

The Proverbs writer would say “Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23 Here the word “keep” is that word we render “guard”, and it is imperative that we are aware of what is allowed to affect the heart. When we allow influences into the heart that corrupt and change us, then we might be led astray into all sorts of wrong. If we are diligent and faithful in protecting the heart, then we can remain malleable to the will and word of God.

Training one’s heart is just as important as guarding it. We certainly do not want to expose the heart to the wrong things, but we do need to expose it to something. How do we educate the heart in the ways of God? Peter is very clear that hearts can be trained. What are they being trained in is another question entirely. “They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!” 2 Peter 2:14 Everyone has the ability to train a heart to love or hate, to seek God or to seek self. There is no alternative. When we are training our hearts correctly, it will be easier to guard them.

In fact, the very reason that we would guard and train the heart is so that we do not lose it. We can lose heart, and then lose our hearts. Discouragement precedes abandonment, but studying God’s word and surrounding ourselves with God’s people will keep us connected to him. Instead of “losing heart” we grow stronger and “take heart.” Let us strive to guard, train and preserve our hearts so we can see God in eternity.
