Education Week and Book Week Celebrations Congratulations to all staff and students involved in the running of the associated activities and Book Week celebrations last week. It was great to see so many students across both Primary and Secondary involved for the day. Some of our staff had a great time dressing up for the open day for parents to come to school to see the wonderful successes that students have been undergoing each day at school. I would like to thank all parents who came to school last Friday and hope they had a great time watching our students and staff celebrating Education Week together. Peak Hill Show Peak Hill Central School will again be providing free entry into the Show for all 2019 enrolled students, as a show of support for families given the current climate of drought and associated impacts on families. Staff from Peak Hill Central School will be rostered on the gates and at our school stand throughout the day. Parents are encouraged to attend, say hello to the staff throughout the day and support the local community. The school would also like to extend its appreciation to Mrs Catherine Doyle for working with all students across the school in building a body of entries for the cooking section and Mrs Vicki Sharah and others for the school display. I would like to thank all other staff and parents involved in getting entries, exhibits and all support proved over the next week with set up, display and everything else involved in the Peak Hill Show. Department of Health Speech Pathologist Department of Health staff from Orange and local health services will visit next week on Monday 19th August to conduct a series of speech pathology tests and support for students in Primary classes. There are still some outstanding notes, and these will be required prior to testing starting on Monday. If parents have any further questions, please contact the school to make a time to discuss in person or call for further information. Work Placement All the best to Joseph Dargan, Tyden Barlow and Jade Gavin who will be on Work

Placement in Week 6 as part of their VET Construction and Primary Industries Courses.

Deputy Principal Report

What's happening at PHCS this fortnight? Congratulations James Robinson It was wonderful to chat to James this week about his incredible State Bowling opportunities. This week James will be participating in State finals in Dubbo and Bateau Bay. This is a phenomenal effort from an incredible young athlete. We are all very proud of James and the quality role model he is to our younger students. James has played an active role in coaching his peers and our younger students in the finer point of this sport and his dedication and sportsmanship are of the highest calibre. Well done and congratulations James, we wish you all the best in your upcoming games.

2020 Kindergarten Enrolment Information and Year 10 Subject Selection Parents and Carers of prospective Kindergarten students for next year, along with current Year 10 students who need to learn more about the subjects available for study in Year 11, are invited to attend an information session and afternoon tea in the school library on Thursday 22 August from 2 - 4pm. Please see the advertisements in this Newsletter for further details. The students in Year 10 have all received a copy of the Subject Selection Booklet for 2020 this week. For more information please do not hesitate to contact Miss Grace Stewart regarding Kindergarten enrolments and myself about Year 10 subject selection for Year 11 next year. High Expectations for Behaviour and Uniform The School Executive have been busy planning a Reward Excursion for Terms Three and Four with the goal to reward students with zero negative entries for behaviour and those who consistently wear their school uniform. This term we will be looking at running short day trips and in Term 4 our aim is to take qualifying students on an overnight excursion. Peak Hill Show Day A reminder to families that Wednesday the 21 August is the date of the Annual Peak Hill Show. This day will be a gazetted holiday and there will be no school on Show day. The school will be covering the cost of all PHCS students who attend the Show, as a sign of support during this time of drought. Show Cooking Show time is always an exciting time in the Hospitality kitchen. This Friday, I will be cooking with every student in Primary to make one entry per student, for the baking section of the Show. Then on Monday, the students in Stage 5 Food Technology will bake and decorate a Novelty Cake for their Show entry. Please stay tuned to see their amazing results! Week 6 VET Work Placement During Week 6 we will have Jade Gavin, Tyden Barlow and Joseph Dargan attending a one week placement to complete 35 mandatory hours for their Vocation Education Training (VET) subjects. Jade will be working at Elders Dubbo for Primary Industries. Tyden will be getting some hands on construction skills with PG Builders and Joseph will be completing his week of work with Betta Frames and Truss in Hawthorn Street, Dubbo.

It is always exciting coming to school not knowing what the day will bring and who I have the opportunity to meet. Recently, I have attended a few meetings with the teaching staff to improve various areas of the school such as literacy skills, developing 'Personalised Learning Pathways' for students and supporting students in developing short term goals and long term goals for life after school. I have met the P&C who are working hard in making sure the parents and community are represented as part of the school. It had been mentioned in the meeting that the canteen have had their menu given the tick of approval towards a healthy canteen and seek support from the community in understanding that healthy eating supports healthy minds. During Education week I have been involved in this terms successful lockdown drill. Our WHS guru Mr Gaunt has created new visual signs to support the understanding of procedures for a lockdown and an evacuation. I would like to thank the staff and community for stepping up and making last Friday special by holding a morning sizzle of bacon and egg rolls, followed by a wonderful assembly with many students and teachers dressed up for the occasion. I too got a bit of the buzz and came out green with envy with all the fantastic outfits. Mrs Anna Brain Deputy Principal (Rel)

Education Week and Book Week In Week 5 of this term, Peak Hill Central School celebrated Education and Book Week, culminating in a Whole School Assembly on Friday 9th August. Thank you to the community members for joining us for breakfast and assembly. It was great to see the reading and literacy achievements of students celebrated as a whole school. The costumes for our book week parade were outstanding, well done to all students and staff who dressed up, and congratulations to the parade award winners. Thank you to Mrs Loedicia Strahorn for once again setting up an outstanding Book Fair for our school community. Success Through Effort The Teaching Staff at Peak Hill Central School endeavour to understand the needs and goals of each student, and ensure the voice of every child is heard in their classroom. I would like to acknowledge the work of all our staff members, who work tirelessly for our students. I would also like to acknowledge our students, especially those who come to school with intention. The intention to learn, improve, challenge themselves and find success through effort. Years 7-10 Literacy Program In Years 7-10, we have continued to find success in our literacy program. In each lesson, students engage in a 15 minute literacy activity, with a particular focus each week. For the past two weeks we have been focusing on writing well structured sentences and paragraphs. Students have been engaging well with the initiative, and we are seeing improvements in all areas as a result. Miss Lucy Dempsey Head Teacher (Rel)

Stage 6 Study Week This week students in Year 11 and 12 from across the Access Program have travelled to each of the five Access Schools to meet with their Course Coordinators for highly valuable and interactive face to face lessons in most of their subjects. The students and staff have enjoyed the study week and feedback has been positive about the depth of learning that has occurred in each of the sessions. Thank you to the staff and students who have travelled this week, your efforts are appreciated. Year 12 Farewell - Save the Date Towards the end of this term the Western Access Program and PHCS will hold their Year 12 Farewell functions for our current cohort of students. Invitations for both events will go out next week. The WAP Year 12 Dinner will be held at the Coachman in Parkes on Friday 20 September at 6.30pm and the PHCS Farewell Dinner will be held at Bella's Italian Restaurant in Parkes at 6.30pm on Tuesday 24 September. PCYC every Monday at 7.45am A reminder to students and families that the Parkes PCYC deliver a fitness program and a cooked breakfast for our students every Monday morning starting at 7.45am. Please see Miss Dempsey if you would like to complete an enrolment form. Communication and Feedback Please remember, that you are always welcome to come and chat to either myself or Miss Dempsey about the progress of your child or children in Secondary. We want to know about anything that is working well or anything that we can do to further help support your child. We really enjoy working with Parents and Carers to achieve the best possible outcome for every student in our care. Wishing everyone a safe and happy fortnight. Remember to add some sparkle, wherever you go! Mrs Catherine Doyle Head Teacher

Stage 2 News

We have had a busy fortnight in Stage 2, getting our art ready for the show and our “Bump it Up” wall prepared to boost our writing. Students viewed levelled work samples of writing and ordered them according to evidence of correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, sophisticated language and paragraphs, then had to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of their own writing to place themselves on one of the progressions. We encourage you to discuss this with your children to congratulate their writing strengths and assist with their writing goals so that we can “grow together in literacy”. Following our book parade and open classroom on Friday we used fresh eggs, spinach and tomato that we collected from the Agriculture plot to make some yummy baked egg muffins to snack on. We learnt how to crack and whisk eggs and how easy it is to make a healthy snack and we had so much fun doing it! Congratulations to each of the students in Stage 2 on their beautiful behaviour and incredible hard work this term. Mrs Lisa Levick and Miss Tiarne McLeod Classroom Teachers

Stage 3 News

Students in Stage 3 have been looking at what our lives would be like without light?

We need light to see everything we do. In every moment of the day. We rely on light to read a book, cross the street, admire artwork, watch the sunset and look into faces. Students have been looking at how using the light from a torch when shone onto an object inside a box, illuminates the object, allowing for the student to see the item more clearly. Students were given a box, which they cut out a hole to shine a torch through. They used the torch to looked at an object which was placed inside the box. Students viewed the object from the end of the box which was left open. Stage 3 have enjoyed being able to explore this subject. Ms Michelle Ross and Miss Georgia Stewart Classroom Teachers

Drought Youth Summit UNICEF Australia, with support from the NSW Government, is hosting the first NSW Youth Summit on Living with Drought later this year. The 3-day Summit is a chance for young people (aged 14-24 years) to come together to discuss the challenges and action needed for young people to better cope with the realities of drought and be better prepared for future droughts. Summit participants will hear from inspiring speakers, and take part in discussions, workshops and activities. They will work with others who share and understand their struggle, form new support networks and learn new tools and strategies to cope with the daily struggles of the drought. It will be an opportunity to connect, engage and reflect, surrounded by the beautiful waters of Lake Macquarie, NSW. We would like to ensure the Summit represents the

diversity of experiences and backgrounds of young

people in drought-affected regional NSW – including

those most severely impacted by the drought and Aboriginal young people.

Applications are now open for any young person (aged 14-24) who is impacted by drought and the deadline is 30 August 2019. You can apply: (Online preferred):www.unicef.org.au/droughtsummit By email: [email protected] By post: UNICEF Australia, Att: Sue-Ellen Simic, Project Support Officer, PO Box 488, Queen Victoria Building , Sydney NSW 1230 By phone: Contact us to make arrangements on 02 8917 3261 Return travel from a regional town (locations TBD) to the venue, accommodation, and meal costs will be fully covered. We really hope you will apply to attend this Summit – it’s a chance to work with others like you to improve the lives of children and young people living with drought in NSW by informing decision-making. It will also be a chance for you to take a much-needed break from the daily struggles of drought and get to know others going through the same struggles.
